Infobox fix
[edit]I noticed the infobox code wasn't closed correctly, I've corrected that 31.192.102.58 (talk) 12:48, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
Well, it still isn't right, and hasn't been for some time 174.73.22.113 (talk) 21:20, 31 August 2014 (UTC)
VYBZ KARTEL BIRTH DATE IS INCORRECT
[edit]vybz kartel started to attend calabar high school in 1987 in grade 7 at the age of 12. Also the all music source is incorrect (just in case you didnt know all music is a bio database that is compiled from people sending in information to them, so its not all that perfect). I wish I could contact Cliff Hughes (owner of this station http://www.nationwidenewsnetwork.com/) to get the video interview where kartel stated his age to Emily Crooks (that he was born january 1975). If any of you dedicated wiki workers/fans could do that for me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.27.16.115 (talk) 17:07, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
- What you say may be correct, but Wikipedia works to what can be verified, not what is true. And what you say cannot be verified without a cite. I've reverted your change for the moment. Feel free to change it back once you have a cite to backup your statement. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 21:00, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
In depth
[edit]Just wanted to say that this is the best reggae-artist page on Wiki I've seen so far. :)
- It certainly is in depth! I'm not sure who put the clean-up tag on it but I wish they'd give more info! Reggaedelgado 22:04, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
Great Page!!
[edit]I love the page and I think that the clean up tag is uncalled for. However, I did notice a mistake at the bottom of the page in the "international collaborations" section. I own the CD "Fire and Glory" by Kardinal Offishall and the correct name of the song that Vybz Kartel appears on is "E.G.G. (Everybody Gone Gangsta)" not "Everybody Gangsta" - J Dogg
well....consitering that bobby put him on, im surprised that he is not credited, vybz has wild tapes out with him, and real need to respect the real, not fakes like kartel. from tapes that came out before 97. ask about it. know the real history.
this page isn't that great. there isn;t that many sources, or proper facts.198.102.103.18 00:53, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- No sources (not a single one for this massive article!), obviously mostly written by fans (no neutral point of view), unencyclopedic writing style. A clean up tag is not "uncalled for" here. #29 (talk) 22:53, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
- I added "unsourced" and "inappropriate tone" tags. Feel free to remove them after the problems have been solved.
- Almost the whole article is written like a fan page... stuff like
“ | In the early morning hours of 27 December 2003, Vybz Kartel took the stage at Sting prepared for musical battle. After performing a string of his more popular hits from earlier in the year Kartel launched into a musical assault of his most deadly 'badman chunes', designed to get the crowd firmly in his corner. | ” |
- has got to go. The part where lyrics by Kartel and Assassin are quoted either has to be explainer or it's gotta go too. If I would just remove whats not written in an adequate style and/or unsourced, I'm afraid nothing would be left of this article. (On a side note, fair use for album covers does only apply on articles on the album, not like used here.) #29 (talk) 23:13, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
Controversy: Anti-gay lyrics
[edit]Someone might want to add a section on the controversy over some of his lyrics where he endorses killings gays and lesbians. The quote below was taken from this website: http://www.petertatchell.net/popmusic/mobos2004.htm "Vybz Kartel sings “lesbians and queers must be assassinated” in his song Bedroom Slaughteration. Another track, Guns Like Mine, boasts that he “puts a bullet in a queer’s spine”."Carniv 19:46, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think this controversy needs to be mentioned in this article. Vybz Kartel's situation isn't nearly as notable as Shabba Ranks' or Beenie Man's. I doubt that adding this information will improve the article; it's already long enough. Blackjays1 12:08, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
- it shoulda mention yes. battyman an dem fren dem fi get wah bullet. stay deh tink we a ramp inna jamaica boy violate an a ak straight. u done know an a waan tell unu suppn to although im lef alliance he was alliance bred u done know. an there was a fight uppa bembe mi tink where im an movado entorage did a fight. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Medianoche (talk • contribs) 03:23, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Wow, it's hard to be that unintelligible. 62.49.219.171 (talk) 10:42, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- This controversy should definitely be mentioned. Vybz Kartel is listed on www.stopmurdermusic.ch and www.soulrebels.org/dancehall.htm with 11 "battyman tunes":
- Batty Bwoy Termination
- Warn Dem Counteraction
- Batty Bwoy Fi Dead
- Faggot Correction
- No Apology
- No Batty
- Tek Gunshot "Mek mi murda a faggot fi free"
- Bedroom Slaughteration "Doh bow cat, sodomite, batty man fi get assassination? (Yeah)"
- Gold Mine Medley
- Gunz like mine "Kartel buss one inna batty bwoy spine"
- Pussy Jaw "Faggot fi get copper to di heart"
____________________________________________________________________________________
- I disagree; the songs in question have not become a widespread controversy (as with Buju Banton), nor have they resulted in a significant amount of concert cancellations, as with other dancehall artists. Adding this subject to the article would not be biographical, and would violate the WP policy on original research, as it would only serve to further the agenda of the websites mentioned above.--Chimino (talk) 01:54, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
It is factual. Vybez is part of dancehall slackness movement that promotes hate to gays (and not only that - similar "values") and even it has not become media attractive it is contraversial.
I would like to point that Vybez is no reggae artist - dancehall mightbe considered as offspring generally (digital relation to early dancehall reggae), but when it comes to message, its more similar to gangsta rap in its worst form. Rasvoja (talk) 19:53, 15 June 2015 (UTC) it comes to message, its more similar
Cleanup
[edit]While it is great that the article is in depth, it does seem somewhat subjective due to the lack of sources and unbalanced due to the focus on feuding rather than music. It need citations per Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Cite sources. It would be great if his style could be described, possibly through cited quotes. Hyacinth (talk) 23:40, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- I've removed a large part of the uncited material on this article. It's a pity, as the writer appears to have known a great deal. But Wikipedia does not permit original material that isn't reported elsewhere. If anyone can get some good sources for this material it can go back in. There was also a great deal of non-neutral praise that had to go. Wikipedia is supposed to be neutral. The article still needs references, and lots of them, to verify most of what it says. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 12:38, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Who Wrote this?
[edit]Seriously, its full of pot holes and dead ends. I have, myself tried to clean it up; but tis hard when I know not much on VYBZ. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.69.5.90 (talk) 12:18, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
Quality
[edit]Who wrote this stultifying propaganda? The whole thing reads like promotional material for Kartel, putting him on a pedestal and ignoring his misdemeanours. For instance, why is there hardly any information regarding the controversy over his allegedly homophobic lyrics, and why have the accusations of misogyny made against him been eschewed altogether? Surely Wikipedia should be an objective source of information, not a tool for asserting your own agenda. And as if that wasn't bad enough, the article is also very poorly written, with little attention paid to details like grammar and punctuation. Come on, people, surely were all capable of producing better material than this garbage. I've tried cleaning it up myself, but I sometimes feel as though that's just too much of a gargantuan task. --Heslopian (talk) 01:32, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Reliable sources
[edit]Hi, I just cleaned up the external links section of this article in accordance with our guidelines and there were a few reliable sources in there which could be used to build up the article if anybody wants to. I've listed them below.
- War again? Mavado, Kartel feud intensifies
- Kartel reveals life story
- Vybz Kartel, one of the baddest djs!
- Stop Order on 'Rampin Shop' - Ne-Yo's publishing company writes Kartel
- Kartel pleads against ban
- Vybz Katel VS Bounty Killer - The summer war
- ThemFromSpace 23:12, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
- The article does need some work, including updates for the past year. The current links also need to be referenced correctly (rather than bare URLs). I'll try to make it my next project.--Chimino (talk) 18:11, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

[edit]sorry for ruining the page, but i tried to add a picture for vybz kartel, so if someone could kindly sort that out i would be very grateful. Thanks . —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.71.120.55 (talk) 16:59, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
YouTube, Amazon, etc
[edit]Just a reminder YouTube and Amazon are not proper links for citation. That includes video links to sites such as irishandchin.com. Citations must be verifiable, written sources. Links to blogs are not the greatest sources, either, but still preferable to YouTube. Thanks --Chimino (talk) 03:15, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
