Before They Disappear
[edit]"Before They Disappear" is a travel documentary that focuses on the Huorani tribes of Ecuador, and in particular the Taoromenani tribe. The Taoromenani are one of the last two tribes known to voluntarily live in isolation from our civilization. The Taoromenani decided many years ago that they did not want to come into contact with modern civilisation and so left to seek their fortunes deeper in the rainforest.
Jakub's travels have brought him into contact with the Huorani and Waorani tribes, who have so far featured in his films. A group of people had split off from the original Taoromenani tribe, no longer wanting to live so deep in the rainforest, separated from civilization. And so, although still true to their native customs and daily life, they are accessible to us and to the camera.
For various occasions, the natives will strip off their football shirts and rubber boots to "dress up" in a few leaves and stalks, grab a bow, arrows, or fleabags, and "make a spectacle" for tourists or other film crews. The tip of the iceberg is then the illegal logging companies that populate the rainforest, building villages where many of the natives end up as alcoholics and essentially destroying the rainforest itself for money, the very thing that has defined them for so many years in the past. A film on the edge of exploration and expedition as another piece of the mosaic of the ecological threat to our planet. Uglynaut (talk) 14:07, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
