Infobox image

[edit]

The article contains a gallery of illustrations by Fischer. The infobox should contain an illustration of the subject, not of a work by the subject, or their home, or their grave, or their coat of arms, etc. Surtsicna (talk) 07:28, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Many articles about painters and illustrators include an image of their work in the infobox, most often when an image of the artist cannot be found. Is there a policy that precludes using the artists's work, or are you simply expressing a personal opinion? I have located a number of images of artists and uploaded them to Wiki Commons, but unless someone is prepared to find a free image of this artist, then the existing image should be allowed to stand, until such time as a suitable image of the artist can be located.BronHiggs (talk) 22:22, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
BronHiggs, there are no policies that specifically say that an image of the artist's work should not be in the infobox. MOS:LEADIMAGE does, however, say the following: "Lead images should not only illustrate the topic specifically, but also be ... what our readers will expect to see. Lead images are not required, and not having a lead image may be the best solution if there is no easy representation of the topic." The topic of this article is Ludwig Hans Fischer, an artist, an Austrian man. An image of an Indian woman does not illustrate that topic. I thought it was clear that the parameters in Template:Infobox person all referred to the person and nothing/nobody else: name referring to the name of the person, birth_place to the place of birth of the person, signature to the person's signature, etc, and image to the image of the person. The topic of the article is both the artist and his work. Artists are notable due to their contribution to visual arts, or in the case of Hans Fischer, his contribution to ethnography. He not only painted images of people from different cultures, but also wrote a number of ethnographic treatises (which suggests that the portrait of an Indian woman is particularly relevant). I thought long and hard when selecting an image for the infobox - and I would have preferred to use something else - but given that Fischer painted female subjects almost exclusively, there were relatively few choices on Commons. I do not intend to get into an edit war about personal preferences - so if you object to the gender, and can find a gender neutral image (e.g. landscape, seascape, cityscape etc) to use in the infobox, please go ahead and change it. A superior option might be to put your energy into searching for a suitable image of the artist himself and upload it to Commons. (For some time now, I have been in the process of identifying suitable images of notable artists (and their most notable works) and uploading them... and, in the fullness of time, I might get around to Fischer - but at the moment I am working on Iraqi artists and I like to be systematic because the both sources and the copyright requirements are similar for groups of artists from the same geographic region.) It should not be too difficult to obtain a portrait or self-portrait since the artist died in 1915, and images dated before 1923, or older than 70 years after the artist's death, are generally said to be out of copyright. Commons needs help locating suitable images of all the artists for whom we have articles, but do not have photographs or portraits. BronHiggs (talk) 00:18, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I do not object to the gender. I object to having a picture of anyone who is not (or anything that is not) Ludwig Hans Fischer in the infobox of the article about Ludwig Hans Fischer. I likewise object to having anyone's birth date but Fischer's in the infobox under "birth date". As the Manual of Style says, a lead image is not required, and sometimes no lead image is the best solution. The image of the Indian woman is definitely relevant, but its place is in the gallery along with Fischer's other works, not under the big, bold "Ludwig Hans Fischer". The image parameter in Template:Infobox person is meant for the portrait of the subject. I never thought that could be unclear, but I keep seeing photographs of graves, houses, coats of arms, landscapes, handwriting, and what not. Since you too appear to feel strongly about this, I think it might be best to have a wider discussion. Surtsicna (talk) 00:54, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The fact that you keep seeing images, other than of the artist, suggests that editors have many different interpretations of the purpose of the image parameter in the infobox. If people would like to contribute to this discussion, it might help to clarify. BronHiggs (talk) 01:22, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly does, which is why a discussion is warranted. Anyway, the portrait you added looks great. Apparenty, it comes from Wienbibliothek im Rathaus, Handschriftensammlung, H.I.N.-229454. I have not been able to find more information, but I find it very likely that it meets the public domain criteria for Austria. Surtsicna (talk) 09:25, 10 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
