Subdivision origin
[edit]Another reason for groupism came from the profession followed by the differnt groups. As people changed professions, they also had to change names to reflect those professions. However they needed to differentiate themselves from people who were already using those professional names. So as people took up farming they had to call themselves Vellala. However since other groups were using Vellala as title, different groups with additional names were created. Thus were created the various groups of Vellala.

More insight on vachanas and vachanakaaras
[edit]The book Arivu-Aachaara by Sri B.Mahadevappa . (A commentary on Vachanas of Shivasharanas )published by Arivu-Achara Prakatanalaya, Yadagiri -585201 is an excellent source for all the sharanas.

Also a lot is commented in edit page which are very much true like the revolution of 12th century which was primarily to reject vedas not because it was wrong but because of the caste system which was very cruel and inefficient in that period was not allowing anyone except upper class to learn vedas. Hence vachanas were written to simplify learnings and people wandered to spread the vachana literatures sarvajna being prominent one in later century. Hence vachanas can be seen as a parallel to vedas.
Hence a revolt against society started in karnataka to oppose money class and the superstitious class with dignity. The social setup to gather for this was called Anubhava Mantapa headed by Allama Prabhu who was mystic. The above book mentioned in kannada provides so much insight and is a very important one. Although a lot can be said similar between Veerashavism and Lingayatism but this particular period of 12th century has to be marked as a renaissance in India as it involved murder of superstitions, first inter caste marriage , empowerment of lowest of castes and a golden era in the field of literature which was just limited to adoration of kings and puranic tales. Lack of publicity has always been the problem with south Indian revolutions and empire. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.144.48.246 (talk • contribs)

Requested move 14 December 2024
[edit]
It has been proposed in this section that Lingayatism be renamed and moved to Lingayat Sect. A bot will list this discussion on the requested moves current discussions subpage within an hour of this tag being placed. The discussion may be closed 7 days after being opened, if consensus has been reached (see the closing instructions). Please base arguments on article title policy, and keep discussion succinct and civil. Please use {{subst:requested move}} . Do not use {{requested move/dated}} directly. |
Lingayatism → Lingayat Sect – There were prior attempts to move the page, but not with proper citations and references and hence were rejected. I propose the name change of Page to "Lingayat Sect" from "Lingayatism" once again. Lingayat is a sect not a religion. Every source mentions it as a sect and a community. [1][2][3][4][5]
Thank You!

- I tried to rename the page earlier , but the move was reverted by a sockpuppet as you can see in previous conversation. Talk:Lingayatism#c-私は日本が大好きです-20241214093500-PerspicazHistorian-20241214092200. PerspicazHistorian (talk) 12:51, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- Move to Lingayat sect. Lowercase “s” MOS:CAPS. Theparties (talk) 20:29, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- @PerspicazHistorian From the 121 references in the current article, could you provide a numerical breakdown of which sources use 'Lingayatism' exclusively, 'Lingayat Sect' exclusively, and those that use both? Please ensure references are not double-counted. LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 22:59, 16 December 2024 (UTC)
- @LeónGonsalvesofGoa Hi !
- 1)actually I don't know how to do that, but I have statistics by google search if it works :-
- Lingayatism- 15,300 results
- Lingayat sect - 26,300 results
- Lingayats - 12,40,000 results.
- 2)Thanks for your approach I think "Lingayats" would be a better move.
- Will assist further if needed, Thank You! PerspicazHistorian (talk) 06:11, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Move to Lingayat sect. It appears "Lingayat sect" is a better page title like other sects - Warkari, Radha Vallabha Sampradaya. Thanks ! PerspicazHistorian (talk) 06:14, 17 December 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose: To justify a retitling, more evidence needs to be provided. The more I read this article, the more I see instances where it is referred to as a sect, and others where it is referred to as a religion. Will continue to review and get back to this discussion. LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 03:03, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- Many citations refer it as a religious community, not as religion. There are many misinterpretations for the given references. Please look into it with more attention. Thank You ! PerspicazHistorian (talk) 09:39, 18 December 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: The current title does not necessarily say it is a distinct religion, so I don't see a direct relationship between the suggested title change and the question of whether it is a sect or a religion. The suggested title is less WP:CONCISE. Another possible title is Lingayats (which is already what the opening sentence says, although that was recently changed). — BarrelProof (talk) 20:45, 21 December 2024 (UTC)
- @BarrelProof I agree, Lingayats can also be a better title. PerspicazHistorian (talk) 09:08, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- Support a move to Lingayat(s). It gets the most hits in Google scholar. Sect or community as well be added as part of the phrase. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:49, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
