move to Josmer?
[edit]Should we move this page to Josmer Altidore, as it seems the press uses this name more? Smmurphy(Talk) 01:11, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- The article was originally located there (see history) before someone created a duplicate here like a year later. Eventually someone merged the original article over here. I never understood why that was done but do not feel strongly either way as long as we have redirects. However, it does seem like the original location was better than here as Jozy is not his actual name. --otduff t/c 13:36, 10 August 2007 (UTC)
- I believe the player has stated that "Jozy" is acceptable for formal use, and that he prefers it. François Metro (talk) 06:05, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
Transfer Fee?
[edit]One paragraph says $6,500,000. The next says ₤6,500,000. This is a pretty big difference and should probably be corrected. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.123.41.42 (talk) 18:16, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Requested move
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the proposal was no consensus to move the page from Jozy Altidore to Josmer Altidore, per the discussion below (please remember that internet prevalence searches have shortcomings, that Wikipedia should be excluded from searches, and that phrases should be in quotes). Dekimasuよ! 10:39, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose - I oppose this move since google turns up double the hits for this title then for "Josmer Altidore." Also the press refers to him just as often if not more so as Jozy Altidore. --Tλε Rαnδom Eδιτor (tαlk) 19:15, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- Very Strong Oppose He is much better known as "Jozy"[1] than "Josmer"[2] as the included G results show (by a more than 2-1 margin). faithless (speak) 01:02, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
- Neutral - I think it is fine where it is as Jozy is probably more used in conversation. However, I never saw the problem with the article under Josmer either (provided Jozy linked over). It's not that big a deal, so just leave it alone. --otduff t/c 08:36, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
removed category African American Soccer player
[edit]Altidore's descendants are from Haiti, not Africa. He may be related to people from Africa, but he is not "African-American" which is a wishy-washy PC term.
perhaps there should be a category for black american soccer players. barrett90 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 03:34, 14 December 2008 (UTC).
Altidore is NOT african-american. He is Haitian-American, or black. 70.166.33.171 (talk) 06:39, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
- Whether or not you like the term is completely irrelevant. An African American is an American of African descent, which Altidore most certainly is. According to the United States government, an African American is "A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa."[3] In fact, it specifically states that black Haitians in the United States are African American. We can debate about the validity of the term African American, but the fact that Altidore is African American is indisputable. faithless (speak) 09:27, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Wrong, he is not an American of African descent, he is an American of Haitian descent. Haiti is not in Africa. If you want to be correct he is an African-Haitian-American. Try as you might, African American is not a catchall term for "black". Removing it again. 70.166.33.171 (talk) 00:02, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
- What don't you get? Altidore's ancestors came from Africa. The fact that some of them lived in Haiti for a time is completely irrelevant. I'll try to state this as plainly as I can so you can understand: Anyone in the United States whose ancestors were black Africans are considered African American. Haitian Americans are specifically included in this. So, yes, African American is a catch-all term for black Americans. I don't see how I can put it in simpler language for you. faithless (speak) 01:34, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Where is the proof his ancestors came from Africa? How do you know they didn't come from New Guinea or another area of the world where people have black skin? Verify your info before blindly posting it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Barrett90 (talk • contribs) 18:08, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ahem, those people came from Africa. The slave trade brought lots of Africans to places all over the Americas, but before then, all of the people of North America, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America were much closer to Native Americans than anything resembling "black" as we think of this today. The sizeable black populations of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Brazil, Jamaica, etc. are all descended from African populations, most of them brought from Africa as part of the slave trade. Haiti, specifically, was founded during a slave revolt. The bottom line is that black people aren't spontaneously born in South Korea or England or Haiti. All people of African descent came from Africa, and thus those in the U.S. are rightly classified as African American, just like people of Asian descent are Asian American, regardless of whether their family stopped off someplace else for a generation or two. AfterMayAndIntoAugust (talk) 06:50, 5 July 2009 (UTC)
- All rather silly, trace our roots (DNA) back far enough, and we are ALL of African decent. Jozy is Haitian-American, what is the chronological line of demarcation? 100 yrs? 1,000 yrs? At about 200,000 yrs, yep, my ancestors were in africa... On the other hand, if Wikipedia has decided that the US Government's definition of African-American is the standard to use, then Jozy fits the bill (so do I). More importantly, he's scoring goals again. Go Jozy, go! IPAddressTooLongToType — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.150.71.66 (talk) 14:47, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
Hard shoving foul
[edit]Can anyone find evidence for this "hard shoving foul" claim in the international career section because it keeps getting added by various IPs, presumably Spanish ones. Spiderone (talk) 12:44, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Format of goals table
[edit]I see no reason to deviate from the format used on the national team article. Adding a flag instead of city and state more quickly conveys that information, and it doesn't look out of place because the flag is listed for the national team opponent too. Listing states for U.S. venues, but not other countries is also inconsistent. Either way, please discuss before reverting again. AfterMayAndIntoAugust (talk) 00:12, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- How does an American flag convey "Houston, Texas" or "Washington, D.C.?" I'm not going to belabor this point because I frankly don't really care, but the fact that the article for the national team violates the MoS is hardly a compelling case to ignore it here. :-) faithless (speak) 01:16, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
- Clicking on the article about the stadium conveys the city and state, which takes up much more space if you are concerned with limiting clutter. The venue is the most important thing, not where the venue is located. AfterMayAndIntoAugust (talk) 01:19, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

New Picture
[edit]Most current footballers have pictures of them in game attire on the pitch, Jozy's picture is of a press conference. He needs a new picture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.242.171.217 (talk) 19:31, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
- The purpose of an image on a BLP is to allow the audience to identify what the subject looks like, which this image does very well, so I see absolutely no reason to change it. Mattythewhite (talk) 19:34, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
blurb about delayed work permit
[edit]1-2-3-4, I declare an edit war. I mean... I want to end one. I think it would be appropriate to include the info – possibly depending on the progression and results of the season – but it should be very brief. Something like "He missed the first two games of the season while awaiting his work permit, and he made his debut on {insert date} against {insert team}." Anyone disagree? JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 10:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- I think it's worthy of mention, but needs to be accurate - which may be difficult to do in a concise manner. As far as I know the work permit itself (on the UK side) was issued last Monday, 10th August, the subsequent delays were to do with getting "international clearance" (on the US side), the bureaucracy of which was compounded by Landon Donovan's swine flu diagnosis. Needless to say, it'll have to be properly sourced. BEVE (talk) 11:28, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- So maybe it's a little more complicated than it may appear on the surface, which makes citations/sourcing even more necessary. Being concise is also important, though, because you don't need three lines of prose about something fairly minor in the scheme of his career biography. JohnnyPolo24 (talk) 17:39, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- It looks like I'm outnumbered on this, so I won't fight it anymore, but I will make my case. As we all know, Wikipedia has a problem with recent-ism. As an encyclopedia, we should only 'report' on events that have a substantial impact on the subject's life; this (being delayed by a bureaucratic snafu) is an incredibly trivial matter, which won't be remembered a year from now, let alone fifteen to twenty years from now when Altidore retires. It simply isn't important. That being said, I know when I'm beat. Best, faithless (speak) 20:19, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Height
[edit]I think that we need to have some reliable reference added for his height of 6' 1" as the Hull City profile has him at 5' 10". May be best with a note of the discrepancy. Keith D (talk) 12:20, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Year of birth
[edit]Another problem in the article is the year of birth Soccerbase gives 1989 as the article goes by but the Hull City Profile and BBC have a birth year of 1986. Keith D (talk) 21:59, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
- 1989 is the correct year. The profile on the Hull City website doesn't make sense. Although the list his DOB as 11/6/1986, the article also says, "He became the youngest player (16 years, 349 days) to start in a MLS play-off match and also the youngest player to score in the MLS play-offs (breaking the previous record by almost three years)." The record breaking game in question occurred on October 21, 2006. He wasn't even drafted into MLS until the 2006 draft, so the 1986 DOB makes no sense, he had to have been born in 1989. His age is cited correctly here: New York Times, here: FIFA, and here: US Soccer Federation 150.108.235.20 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 02:45, 27 October 2009 (UTC).
Place of birth
[edit]The box showing "Personal Information" says that Altidore was born in Livingston, NJ, but the "Personal Life" section says he was born in Boca Raton, FL. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.39.109.51 (talk) 17:31, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

At Hull Section
[edit]The last sentence says "Hull City lost 1–0 and were all but relegated from the top flight". "All but" meaning is very nearly or almost. They weren't "all but relegated from the top flight", they were relegated.95.45.113.179 (talk) 20:21, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
