Transgender controversy
[edit]Rather than revert back and forth, I think it would be more productive to discuss the appropriate pronoun to use. As I understand the situation, it is generally proper to refer to a transperson by the chosen gender. However, one of the sources (Dan Savage's blog post dated 3/25/10) says "For now Baize says he prefers to use male pronouns." Does the general rule trump personal preference? Also, I wonder if a person who "prefers" the pronouns based on their birth gender should still be considered a transperson? Thoughts? cmadler (talk) 13:14, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think we should always take into account what our subjects represent themselves as and identify as. Using a contemporary example, President Barack Obama identifies himself as African-American, although his heritage is half-black, half-white, and he has identified himself heavily with Polynesians from his Hawaiian childhood. We respect his preference and refer to him as African-American. I see no difference here. If Baize prefers to identify as male, I think we should respect that unless there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary. (I also agree with lowercasing k.d. lang's name in respect to the artist's preference, but that is possibly irrelevant to this topic.) 75.66.145.31 (talk) 16:58, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Private Prom?
[edit]{edited by Geogene for spelling, remove soapbox). Deleted for absence of "fake prom" language, see link below.

- Geogene, since you cross-posted this discussion at Talk:2010_Itawamba_County_School_District_Prom_controversy, I'd ask interested editors to comment there to have a consolidated conversation, and apply any decisions uniformly.--Milowent (talk) 17:46, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't think that it matters that Constant McMillan's classmates (possibly with their parents' help) organized a party separate from the alternative prom to which Constance McMillan was invited and which she did attend. Private citizens have the right to organize any number of social events simultaneously. That's probably a constitutional right of theirs.
The community of Itawamba County kept its promise, made to Judge Davidson, to host an alternative prom at which ALL students would be welcome and encouraged to attend. However, it is not in the community's power to REQUIRE anyone to attend any particular social event, because to do so would be to infringe on the constitutional rights of anyone who had been coerced into attendance.
If most of Constance's classmates chose to be at a different social event than the alternative prom, there was nothing that the school district or the community of Itawamba County could do about it.
The community did keep its promise to Judge Davidson. Whatever anyone says to the contrary, it was the alternative prom to which Constance McMillan was invited, which was chaperoned by the principal and by some of the teachers of Itawamba County High School, which made this social event, indisputably, THE PROM. The real prom. No matter whether it was well or poorly attended. Jenab6 (talk) 13:56, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Is that at all relevant to the article? This is not a forum. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:34, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- Not at all. The above commentary by Jenab6 is similar to other commentary made by people in the local community on various news stories, its just personal opinion.--Milowent • talkblp-r 02:31, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
