I'm wrestling with the most difficult and problematic part of my family history trying to reconcile conflicting information about my American-born Peter Amiel. According to a fellow officer John Mayrant, Peter had served on the South Carolina as first lieutenant under Gillon and had previously been appointed secretary to John Paul Jones by John Adams.
The Amiel family were overwhelmingly loyalists, but Peter ... .

"Duke of Luxembourg" Incorrect
[edit]The frigate L'Indien was chartered to the State of South Carolina for the term of three years by the Chevalier Anne Paul Emmanuel Sigismond de Montmorency-Luxembourg, after the Chevalier was granted use of the frigate by the King of France on 30 May 1780. Thereafter L'Indien was renamed South Carolina.
