Are you sure he was elected as governor? He's my ancestor, and family tradition has it that he was appointed after his predecessor was prossecuted for corruption - is this a Connecticut tradition, as I understand John G. Rowland gave way to Jodi Rell under comparable circumstances? I'm not confident enough of my facts to make the edit.
I think he was largely self-educated, being a younger son of a large farming family.
