– I believe that the common names of the counties of Latvia are as follows. These counties remained largely unchanged for around 200 years, even though they belonged to different states with varying official languages. Many of these counties were originally established as Foo Captaincy (German: Hauptmannschaft Foo). Later, they became Foo County (German: Kreis Foo). In Latvian, they have always been called apriņķi (singular: apriņķis), in Russian uezd, and in Polish powiat. The issue arose when I attempted to rename the corresponding categories, but users Ymblanter and Marcocapelle questioned whether apriņķi could truly be considered the common name for these counties. - Support, "county" is the most general term. If the counties would have existed exclusively under Latvian rule then apriņķis might have been appropriate but the counties also existed under other regimes. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:59, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

- Not that Wikipedia uses the Chicago Manual of Style as an authoritative style guide, but it's my go-to for questions like this. CMOS recommends a capitalized "County" in the guideline that says "Words denoting political divisions—from empire, republic, and statedown to ward and precinct—are capitalized when they follow a name and are used as an accepted part of the name."

If so, do they use uppercase consistently? Wikipedia's guidelines (WP:LOWERCASE / WP:NCCAPS / MOS:CAPS) would say to use lowercase unless it can be shown that English-language sources consistently user uppercase. — BarrelProof (talk) 17:16, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- Lowercase per WP:LOWERCASE, WP:NCCAPS and MOS:CAPS. County (apriņķis) is being applied here as WP:NATDIS from population centres of the same name. County is not part of a formal name requiring capitalisation (compare with Orange County) but a description for the purpose of disambiguation. As apriņķis is not capitalised in these titles, it reasonably follows that it is not necessary (per MOS:CAPS) to capitalise the translation, county, in these titles. - Support with lowercase counties, oppose uppercase Counties. These are not consistently capitalized in sources; like district, region, subregion, etc., these translations into English are more descriptive as opposed to proper names. Dicklyon (talk) 06:18, 11 December 2024 (UTC)
