Tasks

[edit]

This article is great, however it does need some work.

  1. The Mayan terminology needs to be updated. I am not familiar enough with this to be of much help but just looking at the more recently updated pages (geographical location, municipalities etc.) you can get better Mayan terms. See Itza, Lake Petén Itzá, Petén Department. Also the Mayan_languages#Modern_orthography has some helpful details.
  2. The use of bold and italic text needs revised, seeWikipedia:Manual of Style
  3. I wikified many of the terms, this needs to be continued. If a page exists to link to, just add two brackets [[term]]
  4. Organization is acceptable but could use some re writing and expansion. ex. Chan_Santa_Cruz#Uaan

Recent expansion

[edit]

An anon writing from various ip#s in the 192.58.221. range made a major rewrite of the page which included many additions and new information, but had problems with readability and formatting. This needs some serious work to incorporate into the article. I'm somewhat daunted about knowing where to start. Thoughts? -- Infrogmation 14:45, 13 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, some good & useful info added, but rather untidy- I think it's a good call to retain it for now, and try to clean it up gradually when any of us have some spare time. I have access to one or two of the references supplied, if I get around to it I'll see about rearranging.
The mini-listing of office titles may not be specifically relevant here, perhaps they could be incorporated into the general text in some fashion.--cjllw ʘ TALK 03:07, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Am not very familiar with your working system, eg. don't know how to cut and paste or I would have improved flow of text myself. Thank you for your comments, James B Porter Ph.D. mayaglyphs@email.com

Hi. Check out Wikipedia:Introduction and the Wikipedia:Manual of Style for general tips. If you plan to edit or contribute more (I hope you will), I encourage you to chose a user name and log in. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 23:08, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

orthography

[edit]

this article is still using the old, non-standard orthography rather than the revised and standard "Diccionario Maya Cordemex" one. please correct this! example: "nohoch" is no longer spelled like that, the "nojoch" spelling (with a "j") has been taught since about 1986. thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.148.9.67 (talk) 09:05, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I employ the old orthography, not because I think it is the best, but because it is the most familiar to the english reading public. The new orthography was designed by and for linguists (who study Spoken language) and presents a misleading view of the written Maya morpheme count and pronunciation, particularly for English, French, Portugese and Italian readers -JBP. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 169.229.148.152 (talk) 21:08, 5 November 2009

Article issues & copy-editing

[edit]

Currently working my way through a copy edit for this article on behalf of the GOCE. The article exhibits heavy problems which I hope to at least partly address as I go through, including but not limited to:

  • Lack of inline citations
  • Seemingly mixed/confusing terminology (Iz'a vs. Itzá?)
  • Red flags for potential lack of WP:NPOV (will be trying to cut down on this as I edit)
  • Sources in some cases cannot be easily tracked down for verifiability (e.g. the Martinez Hachim works)

The rookie mistake I made was not checking the version history; @Malvoliox already flagged most of this earlier this month. Apologies for the inadvertent double-dipping. I'm planning to do my best to semi-overhaul the article as needed as I copy edit; if another other users feel this is a bad plan of action please feel free to let me know. Thank you for looking at this. I initially came here looking to copy edit for the GOCE drive myself, but then I realized it was a bit above my proverbial pay grade and so left it for someone else with the capacity...the overhaul seems needed & going in a good direction ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 22:19, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And if you want -- we could add template:POV as an additional flag on this one as an additional flag. ~Malvoliox (talk | contribs) 22:23, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good – no problem. Thanks for looking at this yourself in the first place! I'm planning on doing as much sourcing as possible, but a lot of this comes from books inaccessible through the Web, so that part will likely be a longer task for the future.
