Removed excess info re school magazine, as per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Schools#What_not_to_include) --213.121.151.142 (talk) 23:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removed the redundant house list as the info is already described in the introduction and anyway seems to be unecessary according to the wiki schools guidelines (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Schools#What_not_to_include)

Looking at these guidlines I think that the buildings sections should be shortened and taken out of a list form, and a ciriculum section added. Also the intro should be shortened, some of the info being moved into the main part of the article.

Frequent Vandalism/Abuse

[edit]

Note on vandalism: As a pupil of the school i felt like i should let someone know that the reason the page suffers so much vandalism is that pupils are irritated by the fact that the school's IT department are using this page as a blatant advert for the school. For example, the article notes that there are boys and girls changing rooms, complete with showers on site: any member of the school knows that the on site changing facilities are terrible, the girl's room has a broken lock, while the boy's room's door doesn't shut properly, has poor quality open showers that are never used and is frequently passed through by (female) cleaning staff to get to their supply closet.

Although i don't have a wiki account the article clearly is not neutral point of veiw and is being used as an advert for the school.

Half of this article sounds like an advert for the school to me

That's because it basically is! As another pupil at the school, the sport facilities are not half as good as the article lists - although the info about Castle Dyke is now an accurate representation of what the facilities are like. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.9.145 (talk) 20:41, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Independent

[edit]

Hello

I'm a pupil of the school, and I just want to point out that Birkdale school is an INDEPENTENT school, not public. It's a private school. Please change it back to indepentent, as I did edit it once —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.203.234.119 (talk) 20:03, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

- you idiot, public school MEANS private. A state school is called a public school in America, a public school here is called a private school in America. Get your jargon right! All schools in the HMC are public schools. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zenith88 (talkcontribs) 02:28, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To the above muppet - a "public" school is a boarding school that you pay fees for, i.e. a grammar school. Private = independent. Get YOUR jargon right.

Re: vandalism on the site - if someone is going to mention the troubles that the school have had over the lease of Castle Dyke, I think it is fair that both sides of the story are heard. Also, the facilities should be displayed warts and all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.19.88.96 (talk) 17:08, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A grammar school is quite different from a 'public school'. See eg Public schools guide where you will find Birkdale. If there are cited sources for anything at Castle Dyke, eg from the Star, by all means add them. -- roundhouse0 (talk) 17:17, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

To Roundhouse0- I was wondering if you've ever considered adopting a sign off line, having such a name. I was thinking something on the lines of "you've just been roundhouse kicked", but you can choose your own one if you want. Either way it should be done. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.23.48.116 (talk) 03:11, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bruce Dickinson

[edit]

Bruce Dickinson was a pupil at Birkdale School, however he was expelled. This does not mean he should not appear on the page, simply because the school don't want to associate with him. This page is about facts - not the school's advertising slant. This point is not up for discussion, if he is removed he will be re-added. Private businesses should not be able to shape their Wikipedia article to suit their marketing scheme. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.97.134.194 (talk) 15:25, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He wasn't, this is a myth. As a pupil this article IS a complete advert for the school, manipulated by the IT department (we were even ordered not to alter the school's wikipedia article) and not NPOV. However, Bruce didn't attend birkdale - he went to manor top school in sheffield before going to a private school in northamptonshire, from which he was expelled. See Bruce_Dickinson#Childhood for more info. Facts like this also need citations. --213.121.151.142 (talk) 23:13, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Bruce did attend Birkdale briefly. I know this because I know previous Birkdale pupils who confirmed that they were at Birkdale with Bruce. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.105.182.208 (talk) 23:11, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well that's not exactly first hand knowledge, and besides the fact needs citation anyway. Yes this article is not well referenced anyway but if a point is dispute like this it clearly needs a source. Also, as an ex pupil the story that circulated the school was that Bruce was expelled for urinating through the headmasters window - however this actually occured at a different school so i still think that this could be a myth. If a source confirming Bruce's attendance can be found, by all means add him to the article but i would suggest that if he only attended for a breif period this be noted - being in the notable alumni section implies gradiation from a school. 213.121.151.142 (talk) 02:18, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can confirm that Bruce Dickinson was a pupil at Birkdale, the year below me I think. He wasn't 'Bruce' then , that is his middle name, he was simply Paul Dickinson. I have a vague memory of prominent facial features and dark hair in the classic pudding-basin cut. More to the point, there is an extant school photo featuring the boy himself, which at some point I'll lay my hands on (not in my possession). Jvphutchins (talk) 20:14, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've found an online source which confirms that Bruce did attend Birkdale briefly before going to a boarding school in Northamptonshire. Bruce's family moved a lot when he was young and he attended several schools, so Birkdale was one of many. http://ideasuk.com/pdfs/ideasuk-conf-prog10v2.pdf —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.105.153.72 (talk) 17:52, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was at school with Bruce at Birkdale also. In fact we are still friends to this day although I have not seen him for about 8 years. He stayed at my home when I opened a radio station named peak107 in 1998. He and I were photographed by the Sheffield newspaper the Star when he came to open my radio station. The conservative candidate for Hallam Sheffield ( Ian G Walker) was also at Birkdale with Bruce and they both went to Oundle afterwards. Bruce was not happy at Birkdale and was in many ways an outsider but I always got on with him due to our joint interest in audio recording. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wayney57 (talkcontribs) 21:34, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

This article still reads like an advert for the school. I am aware the school itself is involved with this - either a rewrite and protection or deletion may be suitable? Stoats (talk) 16:36, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
