Bias Comment
[edit]Here is a bias and intimidating comment made by user pandacomics on August 1, 2008.
I don't know how else to burst your bubble, but he's really not that famous now. I mean, if he "withdrew himself" from winning awards - prove it.
Should we have an open mind and not being judgemental on others contributions? All construtive comments and feedbacks are welcome in order to make all contributions substantial. Being intimidating/threatening to scare other users away are not healthy for Wikipedia. Let's create a fair environment in Wikipedia and maintain it's popularity. E_intelligence —Preceding undated comment was added at 23:33, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see how that is threatening at all, the most you can say is "less friendly". And he's got a point there. You got something you want to share? We would love it. But we need evidence. Now we can't really pull out AT and ask him if he withdrew from getting awards or can't get awards anymore, so we need news articles and statistics to prove that. And now that the baidu is cleared of a reliable source, you would need another source in order to insert the information you want into wikipedia. I applaud your continued efforts =) Dengero (talk) 00:21, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
This message I got on the same day is what I called threats:
Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did to Alan Tam. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Since Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. If you continue spamming, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Pandacomics (talk) 16:34, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
In Wikipedia, everybody should have a chance to learn to contribute. Try to threaten a new user to contribute should not happen in a healthy environment even though you don't like what you see. I contacted the administrator and I was told that spamming is not a valid accusation in this case. I can sense manipulation here. E_intelligence
I find that to say Alan Tam is not famous any more is very judgemental. What is it based on? A personal judgement? Any evidence? It is a typical irresponsible way to try to discourage other users to contribute to write about this singer. E_intelligence —Preceding undated comment was added at 01:31, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
- Although Pandacomics can be a little blunt, he means well. Here on Wikipedia, we try to avoid peacock term. So instead of saying how great Alan Tam is, show us what he has done that makes him so great. Show, don't tell. We all naturally have our own opinion about things, but don't let that filter into articles. Perhaps you can familiarise yourself with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. Sometimes, other editors may question what you've written, but it is to the benefit of the encyclopedia. Verifiablity is an important aspect of Wikipedia. So if you can provide a reliable source, then please cite it. Otherwise, per WP:BLP, it can and will be removed. By all means, don't let what has transpired here discourage you from editing. In fact, as Dengero has done earlier, I invite you to our WikiProject, WP:CLE, so we can continue our efforts in building articles like Alan Tam. If you have any questions, go ahead and ask me on my talk page. – Skyezx // msg 02:37, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Bias
[edit]This entire paragraph:-
...To Chinese music fans around the world, his name is synonymous with Cantopop at its finest. Since his entrée into the Hong Kong music scene in 1973, Alan Tam’s star has risen to heights unmatched by any Cantopop singer before him, and remains to be eclipsed. Alan Tam is a man who, through his artistry, his charisma, his compassion and his dedication, has won the life-long loyalty of legions of fans.
is biased. And so are the rest of the article. Arthur Oon
I have put http://b.baidu.com as a reference for historical information for Alan Tam. According to the guidelines from Wikipedia:External links, important point 1 states that it is totally acceptable. We have to understand that in wriiting articles for singers/movie Stars, it is avoidable to refer to fan club or entertainment websites for reference.
- Actually, the problem with Baidu Baike is that it's an encyclopedia that anyone can edit (sound familiar?). That's why we cannot accept it as a reliable source. The only inline citations that are acceptable are, surprise, reliable sources. As for entertainment websites, if it says something factual like "oh, so-and-so is releasing an album today," then it's fine. It's the rumours that should be taken with a large grain of salt; the other stuff is fine. Pandacomics (talk) 16:02, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
According to you, Baidu is very similar to wikipedia since everybody can edit. If you cannot accept Baidu as a reliable source, are you saying that you cannot accept Wikipedia as a reliable source? I believe that the logic should be "the majority wins". If a website such as Baidu or Wikipedia has very high traffic, it can be used as a reliable source. I am not sure I can say that for scientific research, but it is 100% sure for the entertainment business. —Preceding unsigned comment added by E intelligence (talk • contribs) 16:11, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
- Actually, you've hit it on the head. Wikipedia, in fact, cannot be accepted as a reliable source either. That's why you never see other Wikipedia articles being cited within another Wikipedia article. See WP:SPS. The entire encyclopedia is comprised of information collected from numerous other secondary sources. Baidu Baike doesn't stress the need to cite its information; we do. If we have a piece of information to share, we prove it and verify it with reliable third-party sources. As for "majority wins", I have no idea what you're referring to. You're going to have to clarify. Pandacomics (talk) 16:22, 4 August 2008 (UTC)
Fact checking
[edit]Grammar, style and organization aside, I have problems with the following in this entry:
1. birth date: I think AT was born in 1950, not 1952. Someone should double check though.
2. "... was not renowned for singing fast songs..." Not sure about this. One of his greatest hits, "Love Trap", is a fast number.
3. "... In the band, his vocals stood out and he was lead singer for many years..." Not true. Both Kenny Bee and AT were lead vocals.
4. "... he took brave steps .... and decided to go solo..." This makes it sound like he left the group, but I think it was more like the jobs die down, then everyone decided to go separate ways, though I do not have any citation on this.
5. "... after the deaths of Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui, he teamed up with ..." Not sure how his teaming up with Hacken Lee has anything to do with the deaths of the LC and AM.
6. The use of the term "Artiste" for singer/pop star/entertainer is irritating. I think the term originated from a literal translation of some Japanese term. The original meaning is probably lost in the translation. This is not common English usage. Kay.M 22:42, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
7. His marital status needs to be corrected or updated. At present the spouse information seems to indicate he is a bigamist. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.79.110.176 (talk) 00:00, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
