- January 1, 1797 – Albany replaces New York City as capital of the state of New York.
- January 1, 1874 – New York City annexes the West Bronx.
- January 4, 1754 – Columbia University is founded as "Kings College".
- January 9, 1903 – Frank J. Farrell and William Stephen Devery purchase a defunct franchise in the American League for $18,000 and move it to New York, where it becomes the New York Yankees.
- January 15, 2009 – US Airways Flight 1549 makes an emergency landing into the Hudson River (pictured) shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. All passengers and crew members survive.
