Next Liberal Party of Canada leadership election

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The next Liberal Party of Canada leadership election is a proposed leadership race that will be triggered should incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decide to step down as leader of the Liberal Party in the midst of interparty pressure caused by the resignation of Chrystia Freeland on December 16, 2024, as well as concerns amongst the Liberal Party of Canada about their poor chances in the 2025 Canadian federal election according to the polls. There had been questions about whether Trudeau was up to face challenges, such as the second inauguration and presidency of Donald Trump, who promised to hit Canada with a 25% tariff immediately after he retakes office on January 20, 2025.

Chrystia Freeland resigned and said she felt she had to step down from her position because the prime minister had lost faith in her and wanted to assign her to a new role after she fought back against some of his policy decisions.[1]
