The name Irvin is a male given name of European origin. In Old Gaelic, the meaning of the name is "green water," "fresh water," or "friend of the sea." However, it can also be used as a variant of Ervin, the Eastern European version of the German name Erwin, which means “friend of the army,” or a variant of Arvin (آروین), the Persian version of the name, which means "tested and experienced."[2]

The name originates in Europe, but it is also found in Asia, North America, and South America.

In the Balkans, particularly in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia,[3] the name is used as an alternative[4] to the more popular Ervin, with Irvin being the modern variation of the name.[5] In the former Yugoslav countries, the name might have been derived from the word irvas, meaning reindeer in Serbo-Croatian. These countries also have a female equivalent of the name: Irvina (for example, Irvina Bajramović).
