[edit]August
[edit]After an underwhelming preseason, Chelsea had a rough start to their 2024–25 season, losing 0–2 to Manchester City at home. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the 18th minute, but despite the Blues' best efforts to equalize, former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovačić scored from outside of the box to win the game for City.[2] It marked the debut appearances of new signings Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto, and Renato Veiga. It was also Enzo Maresca's first competitive match as Chelsea manager, who, after the match, stated: "We were against the champions today. We will continue and win games. They [Manchester City] are a master of keeping hold of the ball. The performance was there and that is the main thing."[3]
On the morning of 25 August, prior to their away match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Noni Madueke posted on his public Instagram story, saying, "Everything about this place [Wolverhampton] is sh*t".[4] He later revealed that this was unintentional and not meant to be made public.[4][5] However, despite being booed throughout the match by Wolves fans, he scored a 15-minute hat-trick in the second half, with all 3 goals being assisted by Cole Palmer.[6] In his debut since being on loan at Chelsea, João Félix also scored, ending the match 6–2. Cole Palmer's goal in this match won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for August 2024.[7]

[edit]UEFA Conference League
[edit]Chelsea quickly found form in the Conference League, defeating Swiss club Servette 2–0 in the first leg of the 2024–25 UEFA Conference League play-off round, Chelsea's first-ever appearance in the competition.[9] Goals came from a Christopher Nkunku penalty and substitute Noni Madueke.[10] Tosin Adarabioyo and Filip Jörgensen both debuted in this match. In the second leg, an early Nkunku penalty was canceled out by two goals from Servette, with Chelsea losing 1–2. The Swiss side's goals came from Jérémy Guillemenot and Enzo Crivelli. Youngster Tyrique George came on as a substitute, making his Chelsea first-team debut. Despite the defeat, Chelsea won the tie 3–2 on aggregate, securing their spot in the league phase.[11]
Chelsea kicked off their league phase campaign in style, with Renato Veiga and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall both netting their first goals as Blues against Belgian club Gent. Goals from Gent's Tsuyoshi Watanabe and Omri Gandelman threatened a comeback, but Pedro Neto and Christopher Nkunku added to the scoring, defeating the Belgian side 4–2 at home.[12] The victory did not come without its share of losses though, with some of the Gent fans causing "extensive damage" to the seats and banners within Stamford Bridge, most notably ripping the Bobby Tambling banner from the upper tier seating. A few of the violent fans were apprehended, both inside and outside the stadium.[13]
