Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia CD Selection/additions and updates
On reassessing/ removing content, I suggest the following removals:
Artists -
- Anton Alexander von Werner - mid-level importance artist
- Hiroh Kikai - questionable importance photographer, few photos in article (none in offline version)
- Roman Vishniac - long article of questionable importance photographer, all images of photographer not his work
Companies -
- Fry & sons
Economy -
- various "economy of country x" articles - these articles about individual countries' economies could be replaced by the articles on continent-level economies: Economy of the world - Economy of Africa - Economy of Asia - Economy of Europe - Economy of North America - Economy of Oceania - Economy of South America
Animal & Human Rights -
- Garden Gnome Liberation Front - joke article
Community organisations -
- Baden-Powell House - already a baden-powell article
Culture and Diversity -
- Dada - should be moved to arts section or removed

regarding business articles - Companies
[edit]I suggest having some criterea for notability of companies more stringent than wikipedia's, possibly appearance in the top 100 global companies (http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/global500/2007/full_list/) or high global-historical importance.
Dialectric (talk) 13:02, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Problem is that some smaller companies appear in business studies syllabus also some big companies have crumby (anti-business POV) articles. But I need to go through them. Thanks for the help by the way, the above is very good. We have about a month to go before the final final cut for 2008/9--BozMo talk 16:27, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

- film - Serenity (film) - not in top 250 global gross, not high historical importance

Category History Suggested Deletions
[edit]History / General history - History of Limerick - overly specific, suggest history of Ireland instead
History / Historians, chroniclers and history books - Yuri Knorosov - linguist rather than historian, interesting work, but maybe not as important as others listed in category
History / Military History and War - Hero of Ukraine - recently created award of non-global-historical importance.
History / Military History and War - Hero of the Russian Federation - recently created award of non-global-historical importance.
History / General history - History of the Portuguese Communist Party - overly specific
History / General history - History of Burnside - overly specific, suggest history of Australia instead
Category Science / Biology / Mammals suggested deletions
[edit]Suggest remove of dog breeds - dog is already included, and 4 arbitrarily selected breeds are not representative.
- Science / Biology / Mammals - Basset Hound
- Science / Biology / Mammals - Afghan Hound
- Science / Biology / Mammals - Boston Terrier
- Science / Biology / Mammals - Island Fox - rare USA fox
Question: People - Human Scientists category
[edit]Is Human Scientists a British term? It's a bit confusing to a US reader, since all scientists are human. Maybe "Health Sciences", "Medical Sciences", or "Human Health and Psychology" would work better for a category title.
Dialectric (talk) 14:21, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
- Well half the google references to "Human Sciences" are US but I agree the term "Human Scientist" may be confusing. I will look through what's actually there and see if the alternatives are better. --BozMo talk 14:27, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
October 2008 Update
[edit]Its nice to see the project progressing - I took a look through the 2008/9 version now online, and have a few suggestions:
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - listed under category children's book. is not a children's book.
- True but it is in the school reading curriculum. I will double list it
- The Shawshank Redemption - again, inappropriate movie for children as mentioned above, not high historical importance.
- Agreed. I'll do that
- McFly - again, non-notable band. Many more important bands aren't included.
- Agreed thanks.
- archaeology section lacks a picture; the archaeology article has some good ones - I could reformat one of them if you would like.
- I'll do an version update and see what images come through the check on licence filter
- OIC you mean on the subject menu, ok got it. --BozMo talk 15:00, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
- Homestar Runner - non-notable web comic.
- ok, agreed to take out
And on a more general note, how are the keywords generated? They are a useful addition, but sometimes are confusing, or under-represent a topic. An example of the former, 'made' has a number of linked pages of varying relevance, an example of the later: 'muslims' links only Islam and September 11, 2001 attacks, when other topics, koran, etc. should be included for balance.
- The keywords include only words which are in the article title or in the title of a redirect page pointing to the article. The relationship between the keyword and the topic appears we roll-over script. There is however a problem with vandal redirects (peanut head to Jimmy Carter and the like) so we do some manual corrections. --BozMo talk 14:58, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

October 2008 Update 2
[edit]Here are three more areas, pictures, portals, and countries, which could use some minor changes.
Pictures. The following categories also lack pictures:
- geography -> african geography
- countries -> americas
- everyday life -> food
- IT -> software
- Musical genres, styles, eras and events
- Historical figures
- Religion -> Philosophy
- science -> biology -> health and medicine
- science -> biology -> Insects, Reptiles and Fish
Here are some suggestions for pictures for the above
1. http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/s/Sahara.htm has oasis picture (and satellite map picture)
2. couldn't find anything suitable on schools wiki - wikipedia has 'americas' article
3. http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/p/Portal%253AFood.htm has fruits and vegetables picture foods.jpg
4. http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/l/Linux.htm has some good screenshots or, a disk from http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/f/Floppy_disk.htm
5. http://schools-wikipedia.org/images/538/53892.jpg.htm music score from bach article
6. http://schools-wikipedia.org/wp/j/Julius_Caesar.htm marble bust of caesar
7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_thinker has an image of rodin's "the thinker"
8.? 9.?
Portals
The following portals need some minor cleanup in the form of non-active internal links:
- Portal:Africa - has unlinked 'read more' in bottom box
- Portal:biology - has unlinked 'archive...' in bottom box
- Portal:Early modern britain - has '{{/box-footer| Archive –' in bottom box
- Portal:Algebra - has unlinked 'read more' in bottom box
- Portal:England 'Archives • Read more' in bottom box
- Portal:India 'India Quiz | Archive' in bottom box
- Portal:Law 'more' in bottom box
- Portal:Mathematics - several unlinked interlinks
- Portal:Physics - 'more interesting facts' and 'suggest a fact'
- Portal:Ancient Egypt - 'news archives', 'more'
- Portal:Bangladesh - 'more'
- Portal:Chemistry - Portal navigation sublinks
- Portal:Weather - several
Countries
missing from Subject Index -> Countries / Asia : mongolia russia
missing from Subject Index -> Countries / Europe : Portugal Moldova Lichtenstein Lithuania Latvia Belarus Russia
Dialectric (talk) 10:25, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- That's really helpful thanks. --BozMo talk 11:52, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- Just so you know I have put in all these pictures on the database so assuming I didn't inadvertently pick one with a strange licence page that should go through. All the countries I have done on the DB. The portals are more complicated because everyone is slightly different and it is hard to version select with transcluded content but I will try to hack them all. --BozMo talk 12:19, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good - the portal changes are pretty minor; if they take a lot of work, seems they could be skipped. Dialectric (talk) 13:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
And two more suggested changes:
- bizarre image for removal: http://schools-wikipedia.org/images/531/53167.jpg.htm
- Pitcairn Islands - sexual abuse discussed in last paragraph of history
- Good catches. Pitcairn is straightforward to fix (and is on a list of occurences of the word "incest" which I am working through). The image seems to be an overwrite vandal, will sort out. Last time round it was images of spongebob square pants we had to contend with. --BozMo talk 15:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
spelling error on front page: "This Selection includes thirty "Portal Pages", which give a brief overview of a topic and list some key articles int it."
'int' might be either in, or, better, within ?
