WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

This is a chance to discuss all things Yorkshire and Wikipedia with your fellow wikipedians and just have a general chat to get to know one another off-line. Please click on the Wikimedia link for details, hope you can make it. Regards. IJA (talk) 11:08, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- Also is it appropriate to advertise this meetup on the project's main page? IJA (talk) 11:17, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride!
- What? Wiki Loves Pride, a campaign to document and photograph LGBT culture and history, including pride events
- When? June 2015
- How can you help?
- 1.) Create or improve LGBT-related articles and showcase the results of your work here
- 2.) Upload photographs or other media related to LGBT culture and history, including pride events, and add images to relevant Wikipedia articles; feel free to create a subpage with a gallery of your images (see examples from last year)
- 3.) Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)
Or, view or update the current list of Tasks. This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. Visit the group's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome!
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's main talk page.
Thanks, and happy editing!

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project
A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. These likely copyright violations can be searched by WikiProject categories. Use "control-f" to jump to your area of interest (if such a copyvio is present).--Lucas559 (talk) 16:09, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

The Newsletter
I would like to cancel my subscription to the Newsletter. I am not working on Yorkshire very much at the moment. The latest edition (Auguat 2015) has a bug in it which is freezing everything in Wikipedia every time I go to read it or anything else which may be in my inbox. This may have something to do with Windows 10 which I have just installed.
Can someone who knows more about the computer language used to compose the Newsletter see what't gone wrong with the latest issue. Thanks. --Oldontarian (talk) 07:07, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Just to let you know, for those using the project watchlist, that it is about 2 months out of date. I have been unable to run the existing scripts to update as they appear to randomly remove entries. I tried upgrading to the latest Pywikibot but cannot login with this due to missing code. I have had no response from my query over this as yet so unless we have any Pywikibot experts on the project then will have to wait until I can get some answer. Wetwang University?
I'm working on a User:PamD/sandbox/List of fictional English universities (which of course includes Poppleton University which has its own article), and want to include Wetwang. (There are already List of fictional Oxford colleges and several similar, just nothing for redbrick and plateglass unis like Rummidge, etc).
My other half remembers his parents reading about it in a column in the Yorkshire Post, but I can find no trace in the online files, nor anywere else online beyond the tantalisingly similar My in-laws used to take the Yorkshire Post (both dead many years ago - I am going back more than 35 years here) and there was a column in the paper which frequently refered to Wetwang. No doubt the columnist whoever it was is long gone but he created Wetwang University and referred to it frequently!
in a "comments" section of a BBC page "Paying Tribute to Richard Whiteley". Maybe I need to wander into Leeds Central Library some time and look at full text on paper or microfilm! Or was it perhaps The Dalesman and both lots of parents mis-remembered it?
There's no mention of it in the Wetwang article, not even as "Wetwang in popular culture".
Any ideas? PamD 09:47, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- And yes, there's a facebook page for the University - but it seems only to have one front page, no content or links, so doesn't help much! PamD 12:54, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey Proposal to Revive Popular Pages
Greetings WikiProject Yorkshire/Archive 7 Members!
This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:
If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.
Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.
Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
Best regards, Stevietheman — Delivered: 18:19, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

Theatre Royal, Wakefield > Theatre Royal Wakefield
Hi There,
Please forgive if this is not the right place for this. I am the marketing manager at Theatre Royal Wakefield. Our page listing currently has a comma, after Royal - which is incorrect. How do I get this fixed, I can't seem to edit it myself. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kealeywoodward (talk • contribs) 13:10, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
- Kealeywoodward Hi there. This is a disambiguator; there are more than 30 Theatre Royals in the United Kingdom and Wikipedia (like most other encyclopedias) disambiguates between those by writing it as Theatre Royal, Wakefield, Theatre Royal, York etc. This makes it eminently more searchable for the general public.
- If you look at the text in the lead section it reads "The Theatre Royal Wakefield is a theatre in Wakefield, England, which dates back to 1894". In this there is no comma; it is merely there in the title to aid searching, help with disambiguation and also follows the naming conventions that Wikipedia adheres to. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 13:31, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Popular pages report
We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire/Archive 7/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Yorkshire.
We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:
- The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
- The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
- The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).
We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Yorkshire, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 08:00, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Help with maintenance
The Clean up Listing for the Yorkshire Wikiproject has risen sharply to 95 new articles this week. Most of them are down to an Archiveurl Error. I have looked but couldn't see anything wrong and I also could not find anything that suggests the parameter is deprecated etc. Anybody any ideas? Additionally, a handful are citing the problem as an Unsupported Parameter, but again, I cannot find anything on the templates which suggests any deprecation anywhere. - I could not locate any problems on articles I looked at from the listing. It could be the change to the cite templates that took place last week-end which caused problems with all of the {{NHLE}} templates giving an error. A second release took place to correct the obvious errors. Keith D (talk) 11:15, 12 June 2018 (UTC)

Ezra Jenkinson, composer from Todmorden
Hi, I was just able to receive a recording of this composer's most famous work under a free licence. It seems that there is also a picture of him hidden in a library in Calderdale according to records of the West Yorkshire Archive Service. Does someone want to help be dig it up? Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 14:25, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
Census data
Just to remind editors. References to the Office for National Statistics census data used in a large number of articles are all now dead. The University of Durham have produced a replacement website, Nomis, that gives access to the 2011 census data. Template {{NOMIS2011}} has been created to enable this to be used in articles rather than use the URL directly as this could change and allow it to be modified centrally.
The 2001 census data is now also available using this service and template {{NOMIS2001}} is available to allow access to the reports in the same way as the 2011 census. Keith D (talk) 21:11, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks Keith D; every little helps! However, every time I input a location into the 2001 NOMIS field, it returns data for 2011. I am being a complete biff? I tried several locations (Bedale, Bingley, Harden, Wilsden) and they all returned 2011 data even when the had more than one option (IE Ward/Parish/Built-up area etc). Regards. - That's it! The NOMIS 2001 link above looks different to the new link you have just supplied - the new link has 2001 in the http address too. Thanks Keith D. Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 21:53, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

Images of England
There is a pop-up on the IOE website which reads "This site is approaching retirement and will shortly be closing down. We’re working to make all Images of England content available on the Historic England website." - I've put a note about this on the template talk page (which probably won't be read by many people), and here too as there may be numerous articles covered by this wikiproject which use this site as a source - it may be worth switching citations to NHLE or archiving the existing references if this website is to become unavailable. William Anelay Ltd
I discovered last Summer that the long-established building and stonemasonry firm of William Anelay (of York, originally Doncaster) had gone bust. I was surprised to find that, though they are mentioned in a number of WP articles about buildings they worked on, we haven't got an article about them. I thought we should have, and looked for sources: I found and bought a slim book (Stapleton, H.E.C., ed. (1975). A Skilful Master Builder: Continuing Story of a Yorkshire Family Business, Craftsmen for Seven Generations. York: William Sessions Ltd. ISBN 9780900657344.), and began an article in my sandbox User:ColinFine/William Anelay. But then I realised that the Stapleton book was actually commissioned by Peter Anelay, so I'm not sure how independent it is. I put the work aside, and forgot about it until I joined this WikiProject just now. I would really like there to be an article about Anelay - the contribution they have made to the great buildings of Yorkshire (and elsewhere) is significant. I'm really surprised how little I can find about them - and was disappointed when I realised the Stapleton book was not independent. Has anybody got any thoughts as to where there might be other sources? --ColinFine (talk) 19:15, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- ColinFine There is one mention here about them doing a renovation on Fountains Hall.[1] If you have a library near, you could try digging out all the Pevsner books and searching for Refs there, but it would probably be just a sentence. I have a North Yorkshire Library card, which when you register, gets you into a Newstream site. A quick search on that shows about 210 hits, mostly the Yorkshire Post, but some others. One YP article has this
“ | Established in 1747, it specialises in the restoration, conservation and refurbishment of listed and historic buildings and properties. William Anelay, is among the UK's leading and longest-established specialist in the conservation and restoration of fine and historic buildings throughout the UK, Ireland and overseas as far as Japan.[2] | ” |
- I can apply these to the article when you have it up and running if you like...? Regards. The joy of all things (talk) 20:02, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- The joy of all things: I'd be very happy for you to pitch in with it at any time. I've a NYCC library card too (I frequently use my number to access the OED). I don't think I was aware of the Newstream site, though. I think there's lots of passing references, but I'm just concerned whether it actually passes NCORP.--ColinFine (talk) 21:20, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- I would argue it does from the fine restoration work and the high regard of such a longstanding company; as it says above, they are regarded as afar afield as Japan. If you navigate to the Digital Library section on their webpage it has a newspapers section with the newstream covering 1992 to the present day and a 19th century broad section. I found at least 210 mentions in the 1992 - present day section, but I did not check the 19th century ones. I think its worthwhile. The joy of all things (talk) 21:34, 12 February 2019 (UTC)

Recent changes to project articles
As some of you will know the script for generating the list of project articles for use with the Recent Changes utility stopped working a couple of years ago so the list was way out of date. The good news is that I have managed to find a convoluted way of creating a new list using AutoWikiBrowser. The link for using the new list is Watchlist of recent edits. If you are not interested in talk pages then use Watchlist of recent article edits or for talk pages only Watchlist of recent talk page edits. Hope members will find this useful. Wiki MeetUp?
Hi - I'm feeling a bit sociable, and a bit jealous of all these meetups I keep seeing advertised in London, Cambridge and Oxford - I see there hasn't been a meetup in Yorkshire for a while, would there be any interest in organising one? I'd propose York, since it's the centre of the universe, but if more experienced editors think there's be better take-up elsewhere I'd be happy enough to travel. York Castle Museum work
Hi all, I'm working on York Castle Museum, starting with the earlier history of it's complicated buildings. I'm considering splitting the Female Prison and Debtor's Prison off into their own individual articles. As I work on this they are probably going to detract from the 'Museum' bit and probably warrant much more text than a brief summary within the YCM article. The YCM article needs to reference them of course, but the focus should probably be on it's role as a museum rather than a Castle/Prison. Any strong opposition? Zakhx150 (talk) 09:56, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
- @Zakhx150: That's sounds like a sensible plan. Since there are separate articles on the castle and prison, I think it makes sense to use the article on the museum to discuss the museum itself. Richard Nevell (talk) 17:37, 24 September 2019 (UTC)
- @Richard Nevell: Fab. I'd now split the article into Female Prison, Debtor's Prison and YCM. Haven't had the spare time to really develop these yet, but the underpinning is there. If only I knew someone who knew about Castles... ?? Zakhx150 (talk) 08:46, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Training people to edit
Hi everyone. Are there any members of this project who would be interested in training others to edit Wikipedia?
Wikimedia UK are working with the University of Leeds and have been exploring how to use Wikipedia to share information (here's an example). We have some events at which staff are learning to edit. I've been leading the training myself, but I would certainly like to involve the local community! Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:52, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Richard Nevell (WMUK): I'm reasonably local to Leeds if you want to email me details etc. Nthep (talk) 13:34, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
- @Nthep: Excellent, I've sent you an email.
- And of course if anyone else is interested in helping others learn to edit at in person events, I'd like to hear from you too. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 14:33, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
Training from Wikimedia UK
Wikimedia UK are running a 'train the trainer' event in Glasgow late next month. It aims to improve training skills, cover how to develop and design training, and hone presentation skills. in-person events are excellent for getting people to think critically about Wikipedia, and people really enjoy peering behind the curtain to see how this place works. We run events with universities, museums, archives, and the like, and having people who can pass on their knowledge about editing is essential. The event is nominally to support our work in Scotland, but also has a wider scope of supporting our work across the UK.
If you're interested, you have until 1 November to register your interest by emailing sara.thomaswikimedia.org.uk. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
