Colour userboxes
I'm amused by the range of "favourite colour" userboxes available; why not have one that you can just pipe in a standard colour code (#RRGGBB or whatever) that will produce a box saying "This user likes the colour #RRGGBB", mainly in that colour, with some contrasting text color?
Some Ideas....

- "This user hopes you read each and every one of his/her userboxes! or else..."
- Boxes for the NLL and/or MLL Proffesional Lacrosse Leagues (the teams)

- Donuts....Pretty self explanatory

Suggestions
We need userboxes like:
- "This user is a (link to article about an actor) fan"
- "This user is a non-smoker"
- "This user drinks occasionally"
- "This user supports the independence of (link to article of territory)"
- "This user hates (link to article of actor)"
- "This user loves curry"
- "This user is clean-shaven"
- "This user supports organic food"
- "This user supports (link to article of particular non-governmental organisation)"
We need standard measurements of width and height for userboxes to avoid a clumsy userpage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.74.46.193 (talk • contribs) 15:52, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

New category
"NEAT" userboxes. this includes nice activities, skills, sports, good things, standard seasons. some existing userboxes are very special, and it makes sense, to outsource:
-hate -political/historic event -disease/disability -special sexuality
they do not have the effect to make people happy! especially young people do not want to scroll them each time. it does distract people greatly. the categories can take major rewrite/regrouping. it makes sense to create more than one set of categories:
-red/blue? -halloween? -blueberry strawberry? -sun symbol?
right now the user boxes are not economic (optimized like to attract customers). there are discussions (where ever) about the broadcasting of images of war, terror, hate and disability (if it should be allowed). probably the model of "emotional tone" helps (of the whole pages). if you do not understand it, i think the "sexuality" categories are not official/scientific. wikipedia has become a public information provider, and needs to verify its image. alex 14:20, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
Scuba diving userbox
I think that an Alpha flag (the international maritime signal for diver down) would be more appropriate than an American diver down flag as the image for the {{user Scuba Diver}} userbox. However, I'm not sure what would be the more appropriate action; to create a second scuba userbox template, to start discussion on changing the current template here, or to start discussion at Template talk:User Scuba Diver. Can anyone help me out? Here's the current userbox (top) and what the new userbox (bottom) might look like:
This user is a certified scuba diver |
This user is a certified scuba diver |
- I think that adding a second userbox as an alternative would be more appropriate. I think most American divers would identify more with the diver down flag box, and most Americans who has been anywhere in the vicinity of water associate the diver down flag with scuba diving. This is just my opinion as a wikipedian; I am not a scuba diver or anything.

"This User reads..." Fantasy, Speculative Fiction; fantasy, SF-related subgenres
I think there should be at very least:
- This user enjoys reading Fantasy literature
- This user enjoys Fantasy fiction.
- This user enjoys reading Speculative Fiction
- This user enjoys Speculative Fiction
'cause I like Fantasy a lot, and I like Sci-Fi but there's no tags for general spec fic or Fantasy! I want to cover both. :)
Also, I think it might also be neat to have userboxes like:
- This user enjoys stories about Vampires.
- This user enjoys stories about Werewolves.
- This user believes in extraterrestrials.
I for one would kill for a Fantasy userbox, and LOVE to have a Werewolf userbox (hee, maybe even a "This user is a Werewolf" userbox? That could be fun!).
I don't know how to create these things yet, but, here are some suggestions for design:
- Fantasy - there's a dragon icon in WikiMedia Commons, as well as book icons and "feather quill" icons, which could work.
- Spec fic could have two images - maybe a dragon on one side and an alien on the other, to represent both major forms of speculative fiction.
- "Vampires" - drop of blood (could color a blue water drop image red), or fangs, since I think there's one similar one in use for horror or something, isn't there, that has fangs?
- Werewolves - there's probably a wolf icon somewhere, or a wolf's paw image.
- Extraterrestials - isn't there a flying saucer image?

Fan Fiction-related userboxes
This doesn't quite fit with my Fantasy/Spec fic related ones, so I've put it in a seperate bit.
I regularly read Fan Fiction; I occasionally write it, too, though mostly parodies. I've also contributed to the Fan Fiction,FanFiction.net and Mary Sue articles, and joined (this is a KEY thing for me) the Fan Fiction WikiProject.
WikiProjects sometimes have userboxes so people who join them can post it on their User page without having to mess with links.
I propose we create a userbox for people who are members of WikiProject Fan Fiction. :) Clearly, there's interest in improving the Fan Fiction coverage, as there has been a lot of activity recently on the Fan Fiction page (though granted, a lot of that was a handful of users, myself included, but still) and to a lesser extent, the Mary Sue page. And the WikiProject's been around for quite some time now. So, yeah. Can we finally get our own userbox? :)
I'd also like to see This User Reads Fan Fiction and This User Writes Fan Fiction userboxes, though I'm a little more concerned with getting one for the WikiProject.
I think one of the quill icons could be used for any of these tags' designs, since it's writing-related.

Proposal: Subject interest userboxes
I've been reading through a lot of the conflicts and proposals regarding userboxes, and it seems that a lot of people support the idea of userboxes based on interest. However, existing userboxes along that line are spotty, at best.
I would like to work on creating a subcategorized set of userboxes based on subject interest.
My reasoning:
- If new users find a quick and easy way to declare their preference, it may help move people away from userboxes based on POV. In effect, it could help change the culture.
- If we can design the categorization system well, it could be a good complement to the Babel boxes, in that they could become a way to recruit help with articles and stubs.
A rough example of what I am thinking is:
This user is interested in the subject of Christian history. |
In categorizing, these users would be in a subcategory of Christianity (which is in turn a subcategory of Religion and Philosophy) as well as History. A person can be as specific or general as they want about their areas of interest.
So, is this the right place to make the proposal? I've been thinking it through, and I would like to see it happen, but I know it would take me a long time to get this done on my own. Sxeptomaniac 16:39, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Here's a small addition: I think it would be best started by creating Wikipedia:Userboxes/Subjects as a subcategory of Wikipedia:Userboxes/Interests. Sxeptomaniac 17:45, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
