Templates
What do you think about that template? I just don't know how to make new tmplates. Can you help me with that? Thank you already. :) ~~Yegor Chernyshev 06.10.07 02.59 ~~
This user is interested in SCUBA diving, Surface supplied diving, and its history. |
I think it looks great! I copied your code over to http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:User_SCUBA and you can access the template by putting {{User_SCUBA}} onto any User page! ~~ Gr0ff 06.10.07 22:08 ~~
Oh? That's fine! Thank you very much. ~~Yegor Chernyshev 07.10.07 01.25 ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.168.235.73 (talk) 19:25, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
Here are some more templates. Pretty as I think. ~~Yegor Chernyshev 15 oct. 07 23:27 ~~
You can edit it as you think it will look good. Especially in colours ~~Yegor Chernyshev 15 oct. 07 23:44 ~~
The top two new userboxes look good. However, if we are going to endorse agency-specific userboxes, we should probably be fair and make NAUI and SSI userboxes also.
The last one is very similar to an existing userbox created by UBX at {{User:UBX/Scuba Diver 2}} - Gr0ff 21:03, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
What we REALLY need are some "This user is a member of WP:SCUBA" userboxes. We may need to find some new SCUBA-related images to go in them. Let me know what you think! - Gr0ff 21:33, 15 October 2007 (UTC)
For the NAUI userbox i can't find proper image. The existing image for NAUI is not suitable. For SSI I'd like it to be black, but i don't know how to colour text in white. The best variant for NAUI as i think is their circle emblem with the human, and diver in center.
This user is certified SSI diver. |
For WP:SCUBA I need some examples of other such userboxes. And yes, I think we should upload some pictures for that. (Just do not know yet wht exactly). ~~Yegor Chernyshev 16 oct. 07 12:09 ~~
Also I think we should create a userbox for TDI (Tecnical Diving International). Due to that there is no wikipedia article for that association there also no picture for their emblem. So I'd like to ask you to upload an emblem for TDI so we can create proper template. Also I think it'll be better to use the white colour as background for an Alfa flag in {{User:UBX/Scuba Diver 2}}
~~Yegor Chernyshev 17 oct. 2007 01:56 ~~ —Preceding comment was added at 19:56, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
See the Project page for updated Agency-related templates. Feel free to edit the source template if you think the colors are off. I'll look around for some info on TDI, but if we're going to upload a picture, we'll need to create a good start for an article to use it in. - Gr0ff 20:06, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Examples of other Project-member userboxes that we could mimic:
Source Code | Output | ||
{{User dogproject-en}} | Removed when added to Dog Project category | ||
{{User WikiProject Aircraft}} |
|
- Gr0ff 20:10, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay I got some ideas already. Look at userbox of WikiProject Aircraft. I think we need somethig alike. There are many variants mybe. For example: black contour of a diver on a white background. Or contour of a twinset, or single air tank on the white bacground. I think we should draw it ourself. What do you think about it? For example like this:

(Too bad but something.) Notice that this picture was redrawed by my from an IANTD logo (!). But there was a little differences. ~~Yegor Chernyshev 17 oct. 07 03:21 ~~
And here are five more templates. I did upload a smaler logo for IANTD as it was. But I'm not sure that that's alright with copyright. Check it please

Unfortunately, the use of logos in templates/userboxes is a violation of Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria policy #9: "Non-free content is allowed only in articles (not disambiguation pages), and only in article namespace, subject to exemptions." We need to remove the logos from these templates. - Fordan (talk) 04:25, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- I've gone through and removed the logos from the templates, at least the ones listed on the main WP:SCUBA page. - Fordan (talk) 12:36, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
- Question/observation: We have now multiple orginisation template floating round. Is it not easier to come to one that we keep and the other that we ditch? like choose between: or

Diving Helmets
Hi there, I am not sure if you can help of if this is the correct place to ask but please bare with me. A freidn of mine has just finished a degree in marine biology, part of their wish is to scuba dive with their work. Unfortunately they have a synus problem that reduces their ability to equalise pressures. There is a possible surgical solution, but this is by no means certain.
Am i correct in thinking if a diving helment is worn, although expensive, this would reduce the need of equalisation. Is the pressure inside the helmet kept at a constant pressure? Kind Regards —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.109.96.202 (talk) 08:33, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay. Here it is. If a diver wear a standard diving dress (soft suit) the pressure in the suit will be equal to the pressure on the depth where the diver is. If it was not so then the pressure should crash the suit. So its a pity but seems that there will be a problem for your friend to dive in diving dress. There is an atmospheric diving suit where the pressure is equal to an atmospheric but it's very expensive and used only by specialists. But I think you better should ask some diving specialists for that problemm. ~~Yegor Chernyshev 17:37 11 october 2007~~
Yikes!
Looks like someone else was hard at work before we were!
Cool! Thats good work we need to use it! Hmmm. first. I'd like to feel all CMAS, BSAC, and PADI userboxes by Images of organizations. Than, two first userboxes are cool. I think we shold copy and straghtly use the second userbox. And maybe I'll change an WP:SCUBA with the picture from the first template. P.S. We should connect with that user he might be interested in this project. --Yegor Chernyshev 23:58, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi the above userboxes were made by me (scubafish) using the template provided by Java7837 (did'nt know then that you could change that to your own!! Reason that I dont have images was due to the "Fair use rationale for the particular Images" thus I removed all the images and put text down. Also Yegor, I'm intrestted in helping out on the project if possible. Scubafish 11:36, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Thats cool we need you. For the accept of using, and modifying templates above look here. And, Scubafish, I hope for succesfull collaboration. And straightly - first question: I'd like for {{User:Scubafish/userboxing/under-water}} userbox to have an opportunity to change the number of hours. from 1 till 999 or 10000 :). Is it possible? --Yegor Chernyshev 22:27, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
What do we need?
What do we need to create a normal WikiProject SCUBA? --Yegor Chernyshev 23:13 18 oct. 2007 (+5 GMT)
Great question! I'm guessing we simply need to get a Wikipedia administrator or two to support the project and just "move" the page to the real location.
- Gr0ff 19:52, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
It turns out that WE can move the project. I've officially moved the project from my userpage, to Wikipedia:WikiProject SCUBA.
-Gr0ff 21:58, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
That's cool, congratulations to everybody! --Yegor Chernyshev 22:56 19 oct. 2007 (+5 GMT) —Preceding comment was added at 16:56, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey, I just uploaded a new pictures, and I'd like to show it to you. It's good, isn't it? :) -- Yegor Chernyshev 23:41 19 oct. 2007 (+5 (GMT))
This picture is quite good, and perfect for the Diver's pump article. Good work! Gr0ff 20:30, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
Categorization
I believe that we need to adopt a categorization system to begin organizing these articles. Some categories exist, such as Category:Diving equipment, and can be utilized. The end goal should be to have a set of general categories (less than ten I would hope) that can be used to categorize ALL articles that fall under the scope of this project. Subcategories can then be utilized where needed. This will also help us identify where work needs to be done to further the WikiProject as a whole. Please post comments below and let me know what you think. Gr0ff 20:28, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
To Do
I've done some edits to Diving regulator but I doubt I can bring much to the training agencies spaghetti. I thought I'd try browsing our related categories and found the page on Heliox which was marked as needing references. I've done that, but I'm unsure of the etiquette in removing the Unreferenced tag. Can someone guide me? Should someone be trawling the diving categories to look for articles to go on the To Do List? What is the criterion for marking a page as WP:Scuba?
Sorry to be asking so much, but I'm kinda new here. RexxS (talk) 02:55, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Spammer
My apologies for not knowing what to do, but we have a new spammer on the block - see Scuba diva contributions. Seven edits in seven minutes, but unfortunately all spam. I've reverted one, the others have been cleaned up. Do we spend the time trying to explain to the user or some other action? RexxS (talk) 00:01, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
RexxS, I answered this question on your talk page. Thanks for looking out for Spammers! Gr0ff (talk) 17:46, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
YMCA Scuba
Does anyone know anywhere to get more information on YMCA Scuba, there isn't enough on the YMCA organization page for me to start an article with, IMO. DarthGriz98 02:56, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
Notification of Article for Deletion (AfD) Oceanic (scuba gear makers)

Good Article status
Some articles within our scope look IMVHO like they could achieve GA status. This may be something that Project members could work on which would give a sense of achievement when GA status is obtained. I'm currently looking at Oxygen toxicity as a possible candidate and have found the rigour of meeting the 6 criteria (see WP:GA?) to be a good discipline for my own editing.
I would encourage anyone interested in a particular article to tell the other Project members about it and hopefully we can collaborate to advance that to GA. Maybe another section in the to-do list could be used to flag up potential articles for GA. --RexxS (talk) 22:48, 11 June 2008 (UTC)
World record deep dives
I have started some stubby biographies about the world's deepest technical divers (listed in Deep_diving#Ultra-deep_diving for convenience). I don't have much to go on, but if anyone has more information to insert relating to these individuals, that would be great. I did not put anything in for "the Brazilian" as I could not even find out his full name. I also have been unable to find out much about Mark Ellyatt except that (a) some people in the technical diving community seems to have a pretty dim view of him, and for some reason a lot of people think what would have been a world record (at the time) by him should not count. Does anyone know more? --Legis (talk - contribs) 18:40, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- I took a look at Mark Ellyatt's page about his dive to 313 metres (1,027 ft) [1] and I think I can see where some friction with other technical divers may have arisen (beside his bungied wings!):
Since completing this deepest solo dive, I received numerous emails, mostly well wishes, but a few from would be “Extreme Explorers” less impressed. A few mails were from Explorers angry with me for not sharing information. My purpose for attempting this deep dive, was to find some answers and prove some theories.
Deep Explorers who are only interested in going on previously trodden ground, are not explorers but thrill seekers. If these divers want thrills then…diving with an un-proven ascent plan is as thrilling as anyone could want! If people would like some tips on deep diving then of course I am happy to help in a professional level, the information I have at the moment has commercial value, and I will treat it as such.
- Maybe his reluctance to share information (for commercial reasons) and his "thrill seekers" epithet rub some up the wrong way? I would guess that his page should provide some background for a biog - at least for the most notable event. A Google search on his name gives quite few results and maybe sifting though them might show a newspaper or other secondary source to add notability and verifiability to what might be written on WP about him.
- BTW - you didn't need to fix the internal link: as you can see, Deep diving#Ultra-deep diving works just fine. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 23:41, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll hunt around. I have also left a few posts on technical diving message boards to see if anyone has any info (it is a small world - I am not a technical diver myself, but they all seem to know each other, especially the Brits). --Legis (talk - contribs) 23:44, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
A discussion
An important discussion on " Should WikiProjects get prior approval of other WikiProjects (Descendant or Related or any ) to tag articles that overlaps their scope ? " is open here . We welcome you to participate and give your valuable opinions. -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - , member of WikiProject Council. 14:54, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
I recently posted a stub about GUE, which was unceremoniously deleted after a speedy (notwithstanding that I put a hangon tag on it, but that is another issue) on the basis of non-notability. I have asked for a deletion review. Any technical divers on the forum who feel that they can contribute to the discussion, the review is here: Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2008 September 21. --Legis (talk - contribs) 18:04, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Narcosis
I've done an overhaul of Nitrogen narcosis at User talk:RexxS/Narcosis (diving) by taking the content of the article and re-arranging it to conform with WP:MOSMED as we did with Oxygen toxicity. I'm now adding references (slowly) and think it's capable of becoming a good article. I'd like to know if anyone has any comments, suggestions or objections before I consider replacing the current article. Thanks --RexxS (talk) 23:26, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- I've started watching your page to help copyedit the article. --A More Perfect Onion (talk) 14:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks and please feel free to pitch in with any changes you want to make there. I'm working through the "to-do" list at the top of the the talk page at a leisurely pace, so there's plenty to do. The more interested contributors we can get, the more we can make WPSCUBA work as we intended it to :) . --RexxS (talk) 18:08, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
- It is going to be tough coming up with some good images to insert into the article. Hard to pass a GA nomination without at least some pretty pictures... picture of a diver kissing an octopus anyone? --Legis (talk - contribs) 18:09, 4 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to work through Nitrogen narcosis to see if we can get it ready for GA nomination; anybody interested in collaborating, please pitch in! If anybody has any (preferably PD) pictures, they would be much appreciated. --RexxS (talk) 22:59, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Proposed deletion of Sub-Aqua Association
Sub-Aqua Association, an article within the scope of this project, has been proposed for deletion. Your comments on the proposal page are welcomed. --RexxS (talk) 17:48, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Category:Diving deaths
- In Category:Diving deaths I found an entry (Sergei Chalibashvili) about a fatal accident in unequipped competitive jumping into water. I have therefore split off from it a new category Category:Underwater diving deaths; each category has a hatlink pointing to the other. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 07:40, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Collaboration and review
Category:WikiProject SCUBA articles has 178 articles. Perhaps it's time to assess them using the criteria at WP:ASSESS? I'd like to encourage members to collaborate regularly in improving articles in our scope, but since WP:COTW is now defunct, we would need to organise our own. All thoughts, suggestions, etc. welcome. --RexxS (talk) 23:24, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
- It now has 228 articles. I've set up {{WPSCUBA}} to support the quality assessment used at WP:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment, so we only need use those criteria to add one of FA, FL, A, GA, B, C, Start, Stub, List as the |class= parameter in the template. --RexxS (talk) 13:44, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Message from WikiProject Swimming
Hi WP:SCUBA members,
I've been going through the WP:Swimming articles for assessment, and have uncovered numerous SCUBA/underwater-diving articles which are categorised as one of Category:Competitive diving or Category:Aquatics (and subcategories), or have been tagged with our project banner. Would you be able to assist in the hunt for articles which would be better categorised as Category:Underwater diving and it's subcategories, replacing our project banner with yours where necessary.

Rename Bühlmann tables
I've requested to change the name of Bühlmann tables to Bühlmann decompression algorithm in order to expand the article and accurately reflect its scope. Any comments would be appreciated at Talk:Bühlmann tables. --RexxS (talk) 13:59, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Nitrogen narcosis - naming
I've suggested a renaming of the article and requested a "straw poll" at Talk:Nitrogen narcosis#Name of this article. Any contributions welcome. --RexxS (talk) 01:08, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
Today's featured article
Today, WikiProject SCUBA has an article on the Main Page as "Today's featured article" - Oxygen toxicity. It may attract extra attention from vandals, so any help in watching the article for the next 24 hours would be welcome. --RexxS (talk) 00:13, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation
As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! WP 1.0 bot announcement
This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:52, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Sports Notability
There is discussion ongoing at Wikipedia_talk:BIO#RFC:_WP:Athlete_Professional_Clause_Needs_Improvement debating possible changes to the WP:ATHLETE notability guideline. As a result, some have suggested using WP:NSPORT as an eventual replacement for WP:ATHLETE. Editing has begun at WP:NSPORT, please participate to help refine the notability guideline for the sports covered by this wikiproject. —Joshua Scott (LiberalFascist) 03:40, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
SCUBA articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the SCUBA articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!
