Old place names

I recently transcribed an 1883 work, on Wikisource: s:Notes of a journey across the Isthmus of Krà. Where possible I have linked (from footnotes) place (and people's) names to the current Wikipedia equivaents. However the book includes many place names for which I have not been able to find the modern equivalent. That also means that, if the modern equivalents have Wikipedia articles or Wikidata items, they do not include the old names (or, at least, the peculiar transliterations of those names used in the book). Sawe river - Sawi River (คลองสวี, Khlong Sawi, in Thai). It's the same name as Sawi District. Muong Krà - Kra Buri (Muong would be mueang, meaning town or city.) Ooay Sie - Wisai (วิสัย), now divided into Tambon Wisai Tai (South Wisai) in Sawi District and Tambon Wisai Nuea (North Wisai) in Mueang Chumphon District. Ban Na Pho - Ban Na Pho (นาโพธิ์) in Tambon Na Pho, Sawi District. Ban (บ้าน) means village; their names are often shared with the tambon (subdistrict) that covers them. Muong Rehnong / Rehnong - Ranong Ban Taa Ko - in Tambon Tako (ตะโก) in Thung Tako District Klong Taa Ko (river?) - Khlong Tako Ban Song - in Tambon Pak Song (ปากทรง) in Phato District Raat Koot (river) - Khlong Ratchakrut Ban Raat Koot - in Tambon Ratchakrut (ราชกรูด) in Mueang Ranong District Koh Pee (islet) - Judging from the text, this seems to beb Ko Khonthi (เกาะคณฑี). I've no idea why the names are different. Chah Hoon - La-un, now divided Tambon La-un Tai and La-un Nuea in La-un District

Request to update facts on Bangkok Bank wiki page

I hope this is the right place to post this request. I've found it a bit difficult finding the right Talk Page for the Bangkok Bank wiki page as it is now part of WikiProject Thailand. If this is the wrong place could someone please point me in the right direction.

First off I want to draw attention to affiliations / COI — I work for a communications consultancy that works with Bangkok Bank. This is disclosed on the BBBKTH user page.

Can someone educated rewrite following low quality articles?

• Wat Phra Kaew
• Grand Palace

I can not find alternative sources online, so I suppose it is important to maintain these articles in good state. But currently it is too bad even for written-off school essay. It is a shame to publish it. Illogic structure, terrible language, errors even in the simplest facts, etc. Everything in these articles is terrible. --5.18.102.211 (talk) 20:29, 20 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello. The best way to have something fixed in Wikipedia is often to be bold and make the edits yourself. In any case, you'll have to be more specific with the Grand Palace article. It is currently listed as a Wikipedia Good Article; the errors you mention would have already been missed during the review process and probably are not that obvious. You mentioned under a different IP that English is not your mother tongue, but if you're able to detect these subtle errors, that should be good enough for at least pointing out what the specific problems are. Hello! I am sure this is not the case here, because I just have no access to reliable sources. Also I am quite sure that such articles must be written by people with special education (historical, architectural, etc.) not by ignoramus in this field (like me). Concerning errors in the Grand Palace article, there is at least one obvious error that is easy to check: the article states that the Palace has "three gates along each of the four walls". At the same time I observe 4 gates along the north wall (you can check it yourself easily using Google Maps view of the north wall). There is the same simplest error in the Wat Phra Kaew article which states that "Wat Phra Kaew has a number of buildings in the precincts of the Grand Palace, which covers a total area of over 94.5 hectares (234 acres)". But the total square of the Grand Palace (the Wat Phra Kaew temple is a part of the Grand Palace) is about 24 hectares (it also can be easily confirmed using Google Maps). Such simple mistakes combined with the bad style and structure completely compromise all data in these articles. Thanks. --5.18.102.211 (talk) 14:53, 21 August 2019 (UTC)

Hello, can anyone point me to free online available source for History of Thailand? I already have access to Wyatt's Thailand: A Short History, and Library of Congress's Country Studies, but I would love to have a diverse range of source to compare. It's not free in the unlimited sense, but Chris Baker & Pasuk Phongpaichit's A History of Thailand is available for borrowing via the Internet Archive.[1] For topic-specific articles, the entire archive of the Journal of the Siam Society is available under the domain siamese-heritage.org/jsspdf . Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Place name disambiguators

I've tried moving articles around for consistency many times, yet I keep having trouble keeping track of whether it should be Victory Monument, Bangkok, Victory Monument (Bangkok), Victory Monument, Thailand or Victory Monument (Thailand). Let's try and write this down:

• Use Place, Thailand only for settlements (cities, towns, villages), e.g. Trang, Thailand.
• Use Place, City or Place, Provincename for neighbourhoods and diplomatic missions (as well as settlements whose names aren't unique), e.g. Chinatown, Bangkok and Embassy of the United States, Bangkok.
• Use Place (City) or Place (Provincename) for most other buildings and landmarks, e.g. Victory Monument (Bangkok).
• Use Place (Thailand) for general entities with nationwide scope. This includes places whose names allude to the country, such as the National Gallery (Thailand). Also use for educational institutions whose names are otherwise unqualified, e.g. Assumption University (Thailand).

This leaves us with hotels and religious buildings.

For chain hotels, the location is usually part of the name, so include the city with a comma (Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok) or without (Dusit Thani Bangkok). Independent hotels should be treated like other buildings and landmarks.

Temples and churches seem to have a tendency to be named using comma disambiguation, even though they're usually unrelated and logically should probably use Church (City). I'll just stick to the status quo for the time being.

Any thoughts? I'll be moving some articles around to bring them in line with the above. --Paul_012 (talk) 17:19, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
