Why is X important?
[edit]I propose we lower the priority of "Vostok 1 rollout", "Vostok-2M rocket with IRS-1A satellite", "A Molniya-M rocket with Venera 5 ahead of launch", "Vostok 1 before launch", "Launch of Energia/Polyus", "Encapsulation of Zvezda in its payload fairing", and "Encapsulation of the core module of Mir in its payload fairing". Given the poor quality of these pictures, and lack of historical significance, I think they don't belong in the High-Priority category.--Craigboy (talk) 20:24, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
- My rationale for listing those as high priority were:
- "Vostok 1 rollout" - Rare image of the launch complex at that time, also the rollout of Vostok 1 set precedents which are now followed for all Russian rollouts
- "Vostok-2M rocket with IRS-1A satellite" - Rare and good quality image of a Vostok-2M
- "A Molniya-M rocket with Venera 5 ahead of launch" - The Molniya-M was a very significant rocket, however no free images of it exist
- "Vostok 1 before launch" - Another image of the launch complex, illustrates the support structures well
- "Launch of Energia/Polyus" - Polyus launch images are comparatively rare, and this image would also allow illustration of Energia's maiden flight
- The other two were based on the significance of the payloads, I considered both to be borderline which is why I listed them at the bottom of that section. I wouldn't have an issue with those two being moved to the top of the medium category. --GW… 03:01, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- "Vostok-2M rocket with IRS-1A satellite"
- "Vostok 1 before launch"
- Do we need this image when [3] is already on the list?
- "Launch of Energia/Polyus"
- What is the significance of the flight?
- I'll concede to "Vostok 1 rollout", "A Molniya-M rocket with Venera 5 ahead of launch". If you don't have a problem with it than I'm moving "Encapsulation of Zvezda in its payload fairing" and "Encapsulation of the core module of Mir in its payload fairing" down but we may want to replace the Zvezda image with that of Zarya (the first ISS module).--Craigboy (talk) 17:27, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- "Vostok-2M rocket with IRS-1A satellite" I hadn't actually seen image 1 before, and I agree it is far superior to the one I proposed. "Vostok 1 before launch" shows the tower whilst it was still up around the rocket, which is more useful for illustrating the launch complex than the other image. Baikonur Site 1/5 is probably the single most historically important launch pad in the world. The Polyus launch is significant in that it was the first launch of Energia, the only one without Buran, and also that Polyus was a fairly significant experiment, or at least would have been had it not been for the launch failure and subsequent cover-up. Finally, why do you consider Zarya to be more significant than the Mir Core? --GW… 21:44, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- One other thing, do we need both Leonov pictures? --GW… 22:03, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

- Okay I agree. Also I'm going to switch out the image for Vostok-2M. In regard to "Zarya versus Mir Core" I think you may have misunderstood me, I think we should replace the Zvevda image with that of Zarya, since Zarya is the first module of the ISS.--Craigboy (talk) 22:46, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- With the Lenov pictures I'm torn between the two. One says CCCP and most likely has more historical significance but the other image shows more detail of the suit, the position of the body (something that was very restricted in those early suits) and looks amazing.--Craigboy (talk) 22:59, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- Which image of Zarya did you have in mind? For the Leonov images, I am in favour of requesting both, but could I suggest we downgrade the one showing less detail to high or medium priority. Finally, I was thinking about switching the priorities of the two Molniya-M images - whilst the Venera launch was more historically significant than the other one (which just carried one of a hundred almost identical Molniya-1 communications satellites), the primary purpose of the request is to illustrate the rocket, and I feel the less historically significant image does that far better than the Venera one. --GW… 13:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- I looked and I couldn't find one of Zarya, since Zvevda isn't the first module of any station maybe we should either lower its picture priority or remove it from the list. I'm lowering the CCCP Leonov picture's priority. I don't have much knowledge in that area, so you can go ahead and switch them if you like.--Craigboy (talk) 19:22, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Valeri Polyakov
[edit]I'm undecided on this, but I was wondering whether Polyakov should be considered top priority or high priority. His achievement is fairly significant, but he is not as well known as Gagarin, Leonov, Titov, etc. --GW… 03:01, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
- I feel his 437 day flight is very significant, he's held it so far for sixteen years and no one (especially us Americans) has come close to beating it. I also feel flight duration records are important because they get us closer to that two year length that is often stated when talking about Mars missions. And also I'm pretty sure the image we currently have for his page is misattributed to NASA and thus not in the public domain.--Craigboy (talk) 17:02, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Missing requests
[edit]Two requests seem to have gone missing, I think they were both requested on the ru list and not transferred when the ru list was replaced with this list. The images are:
- Article: w:en:Yuri_Gagarin_Cosmonaut_Training_Center , Image: Yury Gagarin Cosmonauts Training Center, Hydrolab training
- Article :w:ru:Вега (АМС) (w:en:Vega program), Image: Vega lander under construction
I would advise that we add them to this list, although we will need to assign priority classes to them. I would be inclined to list them at the top end of medium priority. --GW… 18:22, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- There may be a NASA image of the training center since NASA astronauts do train there for Orlan EVAs. --Craigboy (talk) 19:15, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- I've found these two: [4] and [5]. This confirms that one of them was taken by a NASA photographer, and hence since they were both taken at the same time it is fair to assume that they are both NASA images. That just leaves the question of what to do with the Vega image. --GW… 19:27, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
- For the Vega image I would put it in medium to lower since there isn't much use for an image of a partially constructed unmanned craft.--Craigboy (talk) 19:41, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
