Emergency: Can a user delete Iran's history of classical music and art from WP?
Hi,
The same user who was highly involved in an Iranian musician, Kourosh Zolani’s AfD discussion and deleted a huge part of the comments from the opponent side on August 15 and Agust16, has nominated almost every Iranian musicians articles for deletion or speedy deletion today. Here are the links to two pages of names: (page 1) and (page 2). The user is proposing to delete almost all the history of Iranian classical music from WP. This act sounds totally racial and discrimination to me. Is there any policy in Wikipedia to stop this user’s suspicious act? Thank you, Thomasshane (talk) 20:07, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

I have raised an issue on Portal talk:Iran but I thought it might be useful to provide notice here as well: a new user seems to have taken upon themself the role of sole arbiter on Portal:Iran, updating the Selected biography, Featured picture and Selected article with no discussion among the other maintainers of the portal or this WikiProject. Iran articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the Iran articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Ambigious template
Can project members give their opinion on this [1]. I am inclining that it should be deleted. World Heritage Site Bam
Hi! I am working on improving the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger and stumbled upon the following: Bam and its Cultural Landscape (official name of the WH site) redirects to Arg-é Bam which technically is just part of the WH site. On the other hand, there is also the Bam, Iran article which contains the WH site template, but possibly (?) covers a larger area (old and new city?) than the world heritage site. Maybe somebody who knows the locality could fix this problem. bamse (talk) 18:57, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi and thanks. You mentioned a good point. Bam,Iran is the current city which the old citadel is part of it. Comparison the article with other examples like Samarqand shows same structure. Do you think we must remove the WH from the city article?--Aliwiki (talk) 13:50, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- I just wonder, how big the following three entities are relative to each other: (i) (modern) Bam city, (ii) WH site, (iii) Arg-é Bam. Possibly the redirect Bam and its Cultural Landscape should point to Bam, Iran (or a subsection of that article) with Arg-é Bam linked to in the Bam, Iran article. bamse (talk) 18:43, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hmmm. In my opinion, there must be just 2 entities. (i) Bam city (ii) Bam Citadel (in Laztinized Persian: Arg-e Bam) which is a WH site. I believe Bam and its Cultural Landscape is ambiguous and it would be better to be deleted.--Aliwiki (talk) 19:11, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- According to UNESCO, the WH site is bigger than the citadel. Quote: "The principal core zone consists of the Citadel (Arg-e Bam) with its surroundings. Outside this area, the specified remains of protected historic structures include: Qal'eh Dokhtar (Maiden's Fortress, c. 7th century), Emamzadeh Zeyd Mausoleum,..." That's why I think that the WH site should be either covered in the Bam, Iran article or in a to-be-written Bam and its Cultural Landscape article. "Bam and its Cultural Landscape" is the official UNESCO name of the WH site and should not be deleted in my opinion (even if it is just a redirect). bamse (talk) 21:38, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
- You're right. Know much more better than me about Iran! So, as a coclucion, we must have two entities, (i)Bam city, (ii) WH sites of Bam which can be articled under the name Bam and its Cultural Landscape, but the latter name is ambiguous and in my opinion it would be better to rename it to Cultural Landscape of Bam or something similar.--Aliwiki (talk) 11:29, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Iranian versus Persian
Hello all, I was wondering if I could get some feedback from this Wikiproject regarding calling people from Iran as Iranians or Persians. My thoughts is that currently the country is known as Iran and all major international organizations call it Iran, and thus it's citizens are Iranians, and that Persians can either refer to the the historical territory and/or Persian-speaking people in Iran, and as well as a synonym for Iranians, but that the most common name is Iranians and thus Wikipedia should use Iranian. There is a back-and-forth between me an an editor on a number of pages including Fariborz Sahba which seems to me to be politically motivated to separate it from the current Iranian government. The article Mehrnoush Najafi Ragheb has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- Fails WP:GNG. Lacks substantial coverage in independent sources.
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Pburka (talk) 04:04, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

reliable source/notability help request
There is an article Bahador Kharazmi which uses only persian sources. The sites themselves of many of the sources are reliable (bbc, etc), but since I cant read persian, it is not possible for me to tell if these are just blogs, in passing references, PR announcements, etc. We have had a lot of trouble with the editor's of this page, doing a lot of sockpuppetry, and interfering in maintenance/deletions on other articles, and we are fairly sure the primary editor is the subject himself. Prettymuch I want to delete the page - but if the sources good, then it can probably stick around. especially as the content of the page itself is nothing notable. Subject claims one song charted, which is unreferenced. So in any case, if somone could review the sources and perhaps comment on the article talk page that would be great. About Ata Airlines, I took a look at the English page at http://www.ataair.ir/english/saleview.aspx - It says that the "Centerl Office", the "Ataairl Line Department," is in Ekpatan, Tehran, while there is the "Tabriz Centeral office" is in Tabriz. Does this means that Ata Airlines has its head office in Tehran? Does the Persian page at http://www.ataair.ir/saleview.aspx also say that the head office is in Tehran, with a secondary office in Tabriz?

Background: There was a previous requested-move survey which ran from late May to mid June. There was a great deal of controversy surrounding the closure and subsequent events, which involved a number of reverts and re-reverts which are the subject of an ongoing arbitration case. VANDALISM
Dear Wikipedia. I am Mtheory1, and I have been making little edits to wikipedia time and again to fix this issue of the middle east. First off, to a lot of Iranians (I am one), this word is extremely eurocentric and rude, and Iranian culture is not the quintessential middle eastern culture. We don't eat hummus, we don't eat rock-hard dry pita bread (as a simple explanation). We are Asians. We have always been aligned with the cultures of the east and many scholarly reports online (and unfortunately, Wikipedia is, at times, un-scholarly) agree to where Iran lies geographically, politically, and socially: South Asia. The United Nations has written a "geoscheme" that is also conveniently located on Wikipedia titled United Nations geoscheme for Asia, where you will note Iran is under "South Asia" (google the geoscheme and you can verify). Two wikipedians, and only these two, continually accuse me of vandalism when I am simply trying to rid all articles associated with Iran on this website of middle east and give the truth to great people who use this website and hope for un-biased, truthful information. User Iranshahr (see her/his vandalism in Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents) and user "ordibehesht" User talk:اردیبهشت have carried out a clear campaign to place Iran entirely in West Asia, when this, my friends, is only partly accurate. Iran is a great nation with ties all the way from the western borders of Turkey to China, and Iran is considered a tripoint of Asia culturally and genetically (with Iranian "peoples" stemming all the way from Iraq-West Asia, N India and Pakistan-S Asia, and Central Asia-all of the "stans.") I am a scholar in this field (Iranology), and I have been pushed by my Iranian community to put an end to this confusion. Iran, no matter what Wikipedia or people who don't know of Iran say, is in South Asia, but transcends three (even all) parts of Asia in some way shape and form. WIkipedia's own Geoscheme verifies what I have been constantly saying, where Iran is (South Asia), and almost EVERY cultural, economic, political, historical, genetic article on WIkipedia verify Iran's close ties with the Eastern steppes of Asia, rather than the West. The two aforementioned users are forcing Iran to be Arab or West Asian, when this is simply not entirely the case. Iran must be recognized ENTIRELY. Not given ONE label mis-appropriately applied label to all of its people for the world to see. To help build consensus for this, wikipedians, please look at the UN Geoscheme for Asia (where you will find Iran), Central Asia (where you will find Iran's Khorasan area a part of even today), and West Asia (which everyone thinks Iran is totally in, which is obviously not true. Please, Iranian Wikipedians, I need your help. User:اردیبهشت and User talk:Irānshahr are on a campaign to make Iran a totally middle eastern country. ARE WE ARAB? NO! We are Iranians. We are Persians. And therefore Asians. Enough. By the way, I am not Afghan. I am Persian, and went to Sharif UT. And how dare you say Afghans are not Persian? EVEN the people of Xinjiang in China are! !خسته ام Mtheory1 (talk) 19:35, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- You should realize that the countries that are a part of Western Asia are ASIAN, hence the word- ASIA! Also, almost all of your sources for placing Iran in South Asia are incorrect- National Geographic places Iran in Western Asia, as do most scholars. South Asia TRADITIONALLY refers to the Indian tectonic plate- of which Iran is NOT a part of. The Indian tectonic plate consists of India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Sindh/Punjab provinces of Pakistan. Afghanistan is considered to be a Central Asian country, with heavy South Asian influences due to its long Pakistani border. Iran, however, is a primarily WEST ASIAN country- Northeastern regions, and Southeastern areas, could be placed in Central Asia- due to ties with Turkmenistan and Southern Afghanistan/Pakistan, respectively. Western Pakistan and Afghanistan are GEOGRAPHICALLY Central Asian as well. Iran is defined by the Zagros and Elburz mountains, which are part of the Caucasus- Anatolian mountain "region"- therefore, most of Iran's populace has closer ties to the Caucasus and Northern West Asia- which are NOT ARAB SPEAKING- mostly Turkish, Azeri, Kurdish, and Persian related groups. Notice, all of these areas ARE ASIAN'.
- As MOST of Iran lives in the North and West, the cuisine also has a very Caucasus- inspired taste- less spices! Breads such as Lavash are also primarily Armenian/Azeri. However, it does have a very Mediterranean flavour, due to geographic proximity. Tehran, Esfahan, Tabriz, Hamadan, and Mashhad are located in either the West or Northern parts of Iran, and have either more Caucasian, West Asian, or Central Asian "flair". Most Iranians come from regions surrounding these cities. Therefore, Iranian culture is a mixture of Caucasus, Central Asia, and West Asia, with more influence from one or the other depending on the region. Due to very little populace living in Southeastern Iran, South Asian cultural influences- from the plains of India and Pakistan- are practically non-existant in MOST of Iran. Iranian culture did heavily influence the Ottomans and Mughals, however.
- If you are an Iranian, it is most likely that you also have Azeri ancestors, who are thoroughly part of the Caucasus' cultural quilt, and have EXTREMELY close ties to their brethren in neighboring Anatolia/Turkey. Kurds, who constitute a huge part of Iran, also live in neighboring Turkey and Iraq. The southeasternly Baluchis, however, who could be Iran's closest tie to South Asia, do not constitute a large part of Iran's ethnic community. Iran is a primarily Persian, Kurdish, and Turkish/Azeri nation. Even the Persians have great admixture with the Turks, Kurds, and even Arabs. Therefore, it can be said that Iran is a West Asian country, with significant Central Asian and Caucasian influences. YES!! ASIAN- but West/Central Asian, as Iran is NORTH of the Arab regions of West Asia.

- If you are Baluchi (2% of Iran's populace), you could consider yourself Central/South Asian. ANYTHING ELSE, your are either Western Asian, Central Asian, or Caucasian.
- Also, Afghanistan's Persian speakers are Tajiks, or Hazara. The Tajiks are Uzbeks, Bactrians, and Sogdians who learned to speak Persian as the Turkic leaders of Central Asia spoke Persian in court. Same with Hazaras, who originate from Mongols and Turkic groups. When people say PERSIAN, in terms of an ethnic group, they refer to any Persian speaker who claims descent from the province of Fars- however, as the Persians- meaning Iranian Persian speakers- intermarried HEAVILY with Arabs and Turks, there is no real meaning of Persian. Calling an Afghan Persian is like calling a Chinese person English, just because he speaks the language. Genetic testing has proven that the difference between peoples living across the Dasht-e-Lut and Dasht-e-Kavir in Eastern Iran is very significant. Populations east of these deserts have more Central Asian influence, however, the MAJORITY of Iran lives to the north and west of these deserts, and have greater affinity to the populations of the Caucasus, Anatolia, and Northern Mesopotamia.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Moonstone188 (talk • contribs)

- I WILL analyse this page and present my opinions later (I am tired:) ). You are very knowledgable and I agree with you, but Iranologists like myself and my colleagues are starting to diverge from some of the things this person attests, he/she must have learned online. The job of an Iranologist is not to create defined barriers and "majority" labels for Iran, but to identify such barriers and the relations such barriers have amongst one another. I will be back with further analysis. Remember, what you say about majorities is correct, but the historians and scholars in fields similar to this wish to recognize ALL the areas of the world a country contributes to: culturally, genetically (pools), politically, etc... I will try to cover all these pieces of analysis in my explanation as simply as I can. Remember also, genetics is not the BEST way of understanding definitions of cultures. Understand that the majority of West Asia is Semetic, and an extremely tiny percentage of Iran and Central Asia (both Persian to the core and very closely aligned gentically) are Semetic. This is why it is NOT West Asian in any form, because for years, Iranian people themselves have rejected the culture and issues of that part of the world. Iran is erroneously placed in the middle east, and it's actually funny because the word keeps expanding. Pretty soon, Kashi (part of Xinjiang, China) will be middle eastern! Anyways, to make a long explanation short (I tend to babble), Iran can be BEST described as South-Central Asian, but not West. It is incorrect in MANY ways, and also does an injustice to Iranians who, quite honestly, do not even wish to be thought of as such. Being attacked by people of this area has major perceptional impacts on a culture, and this cannot be overlooked for Iranians. The "majority" you are speaking of is actually (genetically, culturally, everything else really :) ) of Iran is actually more-so related to Turkey, and just because Turks don't have Mongoloid features, does not mean they are NOT Turkic. A great percentage of Iranian genetic pool is Turkic, and the Persians are descendants of a province called Fars, which the people thereof migrated northeastward, towards the "stans" we know now today. The fact that Afghans speak heavy Persian has absolutely nothing to do wuth your comment: "calling a Chinee person English." The Persian langage has been infused in the culture of Afghanistan (and all the "stans" for lack of a better term) for years longer than English has been in Chinese language, so this connection is erroneous. OK. I will also attach some DNA tests from a friend of mine, and you will see distinct "corridors" of genetic pools Iran creates. The Iranians WERE an Insular people, but NOT a non-migratory people. They moved about, taking their culture, langage, and genes with them. The only genetic relation they have with Semetic peoples (Arabs, etc) is through war and rape crimes, and this is not much. Many Persians mated with Turks, and many voluntary since the peoples of Turks (who migrated from C Asia, Southwards into Iran) were fascinated by the culture, etc. Yes, I am interchanging the words Persian and Iranian quite often, but it really does not matter considering thatthey are all so genetically aligned with one another. I will continue my analysis later. I am very tired. But great job in what you have so far. Really, you are an intelligent person.
- Oh and although you keep saying Iran is absolutely NOT S Asian as a majority, how do you think enormous abundances of Sanskrit (proto-Indo) came into our language(s)? Does that not have an influence on where we are "located"? Mtheory1 (talk) 09:06, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
- I applaud your great insight into this issue(something that really should not even be an issue!). By calling Iran South Asian, more so than West Asian, you are forced to cherry pick certain similarities that exist due to the advent of Muslim Turkic groups. Also, by just calling Iran JUST Central Asian, then what about Turkey, which you claim is one of Iran's most similar neighbors? Is Turkey also fully Central Asian? Iran's culture is a bridge between the Caucasus, West Asia, and Central Asia, with an outlying factor in South Asia. As I have stated previously, South Asia mainly refers to the Indian Subcontinent, which Iran is ABSOLUTELY NOT a part of. This fact is proven geographically, and genetically, and can't be disproven. However, the similarities between Iran and the Indian Subcontinent are there, mainly due to Mughal rule. However, nowadays, South Asia had expanded, and sometimes includes Afghanistan, especially since the British Raj- due to its long Pakistani border and the Pashtun tribes scattered along it. Just because WIkipedia says Afghanistan's citizens are Persians does NOT mean it is correct! I have already explained this in my earlier post. The main region of Afghanistan that has Iranian ( AS IN THE COUNTRY- IRAN) influence is the province of Herat, which has a mixture of Central Asian and Iranian culture. It is not a coincidence that the South Asian influence ever present in Afghanistan is miniscule in Herat! Even then, the citizens of Herat can not be considered Persian, but Tajik, due to their Uzbek, Sogdian, and Bactrian ancestry. Remember, in talking about Afghanistan, we are speaking of ethnic issues that have caused a 30 year civil war that killed millions of Afghans! By the way- just to clarify, the term "Afghan" refers to the Pashtuns who mainly live in Southeastern Afghanistan.
- You also seem to not understand my point in one of my silly statements- "Saying an Afghan is Persian is like calling a Chinese person English, just because he speaks the language". By this, I meant that if a Chinese person started to ONLY speak the English language, while still living in China, he would not call himself English, in terms of ethnicity!
- One must realize that the only reason Persian exists is due to the Turkic groups that invaded Iran and Anatolia! They revived the Persian language after years of Arab rule. Khorasan, a province of Iran (this province should be considered Central Asian!) in many ways led this revival of Persian. Therefore, as the Turkic leaders spoke this revived Persian, they forced many of their new conquered peoples to speak it, particularly in what is now Northern Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. This region of Central Asia had many ancient learned cities, such as Samarqand, and they welcomed the use of Persian as a language of literature and art. Same goes for the Persianized Ottomans and Mughals. Some ROYAL intermarriage may have happened, but, as a whole, the Persians of Central Iran and the Zagros liked to stay put, due to fears of attack by the scary invaders!
- The Turks of Iran- primarily the Azeris- are an Oghuz Turkish group closely related to their brethren in Anatolia, and have intermarried heavily with local Pontic Greek, Kurdish, Persian, Armenian, Georgian, e.t.c groups. They also have some Arab intermarriages.
- Central Asia is not Persian-speaking as a majority EITHER, only Tajikistan and parts of Afghanistan are. Central Asia is inhabited by the easternly Turkic groups, such as the Kipchaq and other subsets of the Turkic languages. They do have Persian influences, however. Kashi (or Kashgar) is a Uyghur speaking city in Western China, and is Turkic- again, with Persian influences.
- Iran is MORE one of the other for a person coming from a particular region! However, MOST Iranians come from regions that have more influence from Central Asia, West Asia, or the Caucasus, as compared to South Asia.
- Turkey can also place itself in Iran's shoes, as both have enormous amounts of Oghuz Turkic and Western Iranic ethnic groups! And, Turkey is not semitic either, neither is Northern Syria and Iraq, which are Kurdish. So, are there regions South Asia JUST because they are not semitic?
- Also, as I have stated previously, the Dasht-e-Lut and the Dasht-e-Kavir of Eastern Iran provide a genetic barrier. West of this, there is more alignment with the Caucasus, Anatolia, and Northern Mesopotamia (Syrian and Iraqi Kurdistan). East, there is more Central Asian influence.
- The Turks who invaded Iran and Anatolia went through great cultural assimilation! Originally, they were most likely mongoloid, but with heavy admixture with the peoples living in Northern West Asia, they lost many of these features. The Turkmen of Northeastern Iran, however, still often retain these features.
- Again, by EMPHASIZING Iran's South Asian similarities, instead of West Asia, you are forgetting about a majority of Iran! EMPHASIZE that Iran is West and Central Asian, with South Asian influence in its Southeast.
- Ancient Persian had Sanskrit COGNATES, as both are Indo-European! In actuality, it would be easier for a Sanskrit person to learn LATIN, than Hindi, as Old Persian, Ancient Greek, Ancient Latin, and Sanskrit were very similar! Also, Ancient Persian was written in cuneiform, which shows great Mesopotamian influence. The ancient Persian cities of Persepolis, Pasargadae, Ecbatana, Ctesiphon (now in Iraq), and the Behistun Inscription show much similarity to Mesopotamian architecture. The ancient city of Susa in Iran was also created by Roman architects, as this city was under Roman rule.
- If you are a Baluchi, then I understand why you would prefer Iran to be South Asian, however, if not, you would not be considered South Asian. Remember, we are talking of the majority! We should not cherry pick!— Preceding unsigned comment added by Moonstone1889 (talk • contribs)
- Alright, I came here because I saw reference to the discussion on another user's talk page, and, frankly, there are a lot of problems in the above discussion. First of all, on formatting: don't start a new section with every reply. Instead, as long as you're on the same topic, reply in the same section, and use colons at the beginning of each of your paragraphs to indent your message. Second, Moonstone1889, at the end of every message you leave on a talk page, add four tildes (~~~~)--this will sign your name, which is necessary so that we can tell who said what.
- Now, as to the discussion itself, basically, everything you two say above doesn't belong here. Wikipedia, including article talk pages and project talk pages, is not a place of scholarly debate. You are both making arguments about language, culture, cuisine, ethnicity, history, etc. None of that is relevant. Instead, the way that we decide what goes in articles is to look at what reliable sources say. If the majority of reliable sources say that Iran is in SOuth Asia, then that's how our articles should describe it. If the majority say its in Central Asia, then that's how we describe it. IF there is a serious debate among scholars, then our articles should describe that debate, giving appropriate weight to each side. What we are absolutely forbidden from doing, per WP:OR, is from making arguments about what is or isn't true. So I recommend that instead of continuing this debate, you look for reliable sources (in this case, books or articles by respected historians and geographers, along with high level political documents, will be the best place to look). 06:20, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
- You are absolutely right. I had I no idea we weren't aloud to do WP:OR. A lot of these analysis are not only my own research, but that of others here in our department (in Iran) and other places. I am very sorry. However, because Wikipedia even has articles that contain information where Iran is EVERPRESENT in S Asia, C Asia, and even W Asia, I think it is right to not just "cherry pick" (in the name of Moonstone) a majority, but list them all. WHat about the Balochi? The Khorasani? I am from Khorasan, and my family has CONSIDERABLE C Asian influence/genetic affinity. In fact, I have family from Mazandaran who look Korean! (Mongoloid features). So it is not fair to pick one label, but is scholarly and justifiable and verifiable to put all of them. That's all I am saying. I agree with all peoples on this forum and a grateful for people like these who care enough about Iran to write responses. But we can all compromise by not agreeing on one un-exact majority and agreeing on a correct, all-encompassing phrase: Iran is Central, Western, and Southern Asian. Thank you for your time. You are all very intelligent people. I value that. Mtheory1 (talk) 02:09, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Well, my position is that Iran is in Western Asia, however, the northeast region around Mashhad belongs to Central Asia (Khorasan), and the southeast Baluchi region could possibly be seen as South Asia. The overwhelming majority of Iran's population, however, live in the western half of the country - west of the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut - and very clearly belong to Western Asia or the Middle East.
Western Iran, where the overwhelming majority of Iranians live, is most connected to Iraq and the Caucasus. Iran's history and culture involves Iraq and Caucasus far, far more than India.
Iran historically consists of two regions. A Central Asian region: 'Khorasan', and a Western Asian region: 'Iraq'. The core Persian area of Iran, including Tehran, Esfahan, Shiraz, was historically called Persian Iraq and it belonged with Arabic Iraq (Shia Iraq), Khuzestan, and Azarbaijan.
It is frankly ridiculous to say that Iran is closer to India and Pakistan than to Iraq and Caucasus. This could only be said with respect to spoken language. But not for geography, history, culture, religion, politics, written language, or anything else. Example: By spoken language, Syria is closer to Ethiopia than to Turkey, does this mean Syria belongs with Ethiopia in Sub-Saharan Africa rather than with Turkey in Western Asia?
Iraq is in the centre of Western Asia, and for most of Iran's history, Iraq was the Heart of Iran ("Del-e Irānshahr"). In religious faith, Iran is over 90% Twelver Shia, Southern Iraq (where Shia Islam originates) is over 90% Twelver Shia, Azerbaijan is over 90% Twelver Shia. This is not due to accident, it is due to the area's socio-cultural dynamics.
Would the average Iranian feel more at home in India; surrounded by a predominantly Hindu culture, or southern Iraq; the heartland of Shi'ism and the heartland of ancient Persia? For nearly ALL of its history Iran was part of the same country as Iraq and Azerbaijan. Has Iran ever been part of India?
To claim Iran belongs to South Asia (India, Pakistan) rather than Western Asia (Iraq, Caucasus) is downright absurd. That is why I have reverted many of Mtheory1's POV campaign contributions. I'm glad others have too. Irānshahr (talk) 02:33, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism against Iran articles
Three users, Mtheory1, Scythian77 and Lysozym, all apparently Afghans, are presently engaged in a POV campaign against Iran-related articles. Most notably by attempting to place Iran in South Asia by removing all references to the Middle East and West Asia from Iran-articles and changing these to South Asia. The article on Iranian cuisine has also come under attack by Afghans trying to de-link the relationship Iranian cuisine shares with some of its Mediterranean counterparts. Also, there is a POV campaign by Afghans trying to include Hazara's as part of the Persian people and civilization, which frankly, they're not. As a side note, Persian-speakers from Afghanistan already have their own pages (for Tajiks, Hazara's etc). Persians of Iran need their own page too as we are a different people, with a different contemporary culture, politics, history and society (contemporary society and culture of Iran has nothing in common with Afghanistan).
So in sum, it appears that these three Afghans are making a deliberate effort to vandalize Iran-related articles. A watch needs to be kept on them by Iranian members here and their POV campaign against us firmly rejected. اردیبهشت (talk) 18:10, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- That's rubbish. I cannot speak for the other 2, but your edits in Hazara people and Iranian peoples are most certainly racist and totally anti-scholarly. You also fail to come up with sources for your claim that Iranian cuisine has no relations with Indian cuisine, but is somehow directly related to the cuisine of Italy and Spain. That's pure nonsense. To sum it up: your edits have a disturbing racist tone, especially against Afghans and Hazaras, and are unacceptable to this project. By the way, you have been reported to admins. And in case you do not know: nobody in here who knows me or has seen my edits would ever claim that I am "vandalizing Iran-related articles". --Lysozym (talk) 22:27, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Absolutely agree with اردیبهشت , POV campaign against Iran-related articles isn't a new thing. Has been going on for a long time, and carried out by people with hatred towards Iran and Iranian/Persian culture. SomeGuy1122 (talk) 11:58, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
The only thing Iranian cuisine has related to Indian cuisine is what they took from us (for example Biryani and Kebab). We have gained nothing from India or Pakistan and are certainly not in South Asia. Why the idiots in the UN placed us in South Asia is a mystery to me, but that is an anomaly and is not represented anywhere else. I fully support the banning of members who try and taint Iran and Iranians by placing us with Pakistanis and Indians. Towards the other point about the Mediterranean, we are also not related to them. We don't have a lot in common with Spanish and Italians and Iranians who try and link us to them have an inferiority complex and are a shame to the rest of us. We are a Middle Eastern people, with relations with other middle eastern, Caucasian, and central Asian countries.
PS Just want to say I fixed the Iranian Cuisine article, removed the Indian subcontinent nonsense. Instead put in that we share similarities with Middle East and Afghanistan. Go to the history of that page for my reasons for the changes.ResurrectionOfABeast (talk) 15:50, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
- Neighnouring countries, all over the world, share similarities in culture, language, and also cuisine. Of course Iran - and the entire Iranian world, which also includes countries like Afghanistan - have a lot common with neighbouring cultures, such as those of India ("India" is just a Western name for a large sub-continent as big and as diverse as Europe!) or Anatolia. "Kebab" is not an Iranian or Persian invention, it is part of the larger Mesopotamian cuisine and has a much older history than Persia or Iran. In fact, not even the word "Kebab" is Persian. One of the main dishes of the entire Iranian world - from Baghdad to Badakhshan - is rice, an important import from India. The more one moves to the east, the more similarities one can find with India or other Asian countries (that includes the universial Asian dish Mantu which originated in Iranian Sogdia and was exported by the Turks and Mongols as far as Korea where it is known as Mandu and Anatolia where it is known as Manti). And the more one moves to the West, the more one can find similarities with Arab countries. The "Afghan cuisine" is in fact a mix of the different peoples that lives in that country: the cuisine of Herat is very similar to that of eastern Iran, the cuisine of kabul is spicy like Indian food. Anyone who denies this eclectic nature of Iranian culture is either uneducated or has inferiority complexes. The Iranian and Indian world have a lot a common, not only in culture and language. Iran has taken as much from India as it has given to India. --Lysozym (talk) 19:26, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Lysozym is absolutely correct. اردیبهشت and only ONE other user are using words like "POV" and whatever to cover up their actions, accusing others of "vandalism" when he/she is vandal him/herself. I am not saying Iran is not "related" to M East, but Iranians are NOT Semetic, and THEREFORE NOT WEST ASIAN. The oNLY relation we have with that part of the world is political, unfair, and the invasions that have been brought upon us. We have ALWAYS pushed away from EVERYTHING from W Asia, and have welcomed our Central Asian (almost 40% of Iran is Turkic, second largest populations) and S Asian (we have MANY commonalities through language [Proto-Into-Sanskirt words and cognates] and foods) cultures. Mtheory1 (talk) 21:11, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Lysozym is correct in his reasoning. Iran is an amalgamation of Central Asian and West Asian cultures, with South Asian influences due to the reign of the Persianized Mughals in the Indian Subcontinent. Again, in speaking of the MAJORITY of Iran, the populace of Iran lives in the North and West, therefore, similarities with Anatolia, the Caucasus, NORTHERN West Asia and Central Asia are more common than those with South Asia. However, even similarities between Iran and South Asia in terms of culture exist. Even then, if an Iranian from Tabriz, Isfahan, or Tehran were to meet a Turk from Adana, and an Pakistani from Lahore, the Iranian would find more similarities with the Turk. However, this mainly refers to the majority of Iran that lives in its North and West.
And another thing! The "Iranian World" that is being constantly spoken of is slightly ridiculous. Including ALL of Afghanistan and Tajikistan in the "Iranian World" is not in accordance with fact. The "Iranian World" mainly consists of Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, parts of Georgia, the Russian Caucasus, Eastern and Northeastern Anatolia, Northern Mesopotamia, and Northwestern Afghanistan.
Also, Proto-Indo-Sanskrit does not exist! Proto-Indo-European does, however! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moonstone1889 (talk • contribs) 01:52, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Both kebab and ice cream originate in Iran. Go on the history part of ice cream and it states it clearly. Also states so on the kebab page. Unless you people now decided to vandalize those pages. Seriously if you want to include Afghanistan in the greater Indian world, that is your prerogative. However I will not allow you to spread lies about Iran. Somebody who tried to vandalize the Iranian cuisine page said that we eat spicy food like Indians! That is unbelievably stupid, as anybody who knows anything about Iranian cuisine knows that it is mild. Such vandalism will not continue under my watch.
PS just want to point out that Iran is not neighbours with India, so don't use that excuse again. We are not even neighbours of the indian plateau/subcontinent, as the half of Pakistan which neighbours Iran lies on the Iranian plateau. Secondly so what if rice originated in India. I don't see you going on the Turkish or Lebanese pages and writing that just because they eat rice they share similarities with India. If that was the case then I guess most of the world is Indian, as tea originated in India and the whole world drinks that. You have to look at overall trends, and they clearly show very little similarities between Iranian and Indian food. Now that I have debunked your theories, don't come with the same story again. ResurrectionOfABeast (talk) 11:26, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
- Kebab is an Arabic word and grilled meat is not an invention of any country. It has been known in the region - especially in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) for millenia. This argumentation is as stupid as the Turkish claim that Turks invented yoghurt, only because the modern English word is derived from Turkish. As for the rest: every nation in the world shares similarities with its neighbours. And of course Iranian cuisine is related to neighbouring cuisines, that also includes North Western India. In Pakistan, dishes like "Ghorma Sabzi", "Kabob" etc are absolutely common. This is import from Persia as a result of centuries of interarction. The same goes to Anatolia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. The more east, the more spicy. But that does not mean that there is no relationship. And India has for millenia influenced Persia in all aspects of life, be it the import of rice, tea or saffron, sweets and candies (for example Jalabi), poetry and literature (for example the famous Kalila and Damna or 1001 Nights). That also goes to Central Asia: for the last 1000 years, almost all rulers in Persia were of Central Asian origin. They brought their culture and language (which also includes the Modern Persian language which developed in Central Asia in Samanid and Ghaznavid courts!) with them. In the Shahnama, Ferdowsi uses the word "Iran" for cities as far east as Kabul and Farghana. Great Iranian heroes such as Abu Muslim Khorasani and al-Afshin were from Central Asia. In contrast, Iranian cuisine has nothing in common with Italian, French or Spanish, as some in here claim. It's so funny that Afghanistan, Pakistan and Central Asia - despite the obvious facts - are being excluded, while it is claimed that Iranian food shares similarities with French food. That's not only stupid, but also exposes the extreme inferiority complexes some users have. They feel extremely important by claiming some relationship with Fance and Italia while bashing Hazaras, Afghans and Indians. That's not how Wikipedia works. And such stupid and racist attitude must not be tolerated. --Lysozym (talk) 14:36, 5 August 2012 (UTC)

Iranian Universities of Medical Sciences
While compiling the University of Medical Sciences disambiguation page I came across what seems like an unusually large number of Iranian Universities of Medical Sciences. I was wondering if any experts can suggest a reason for this please. Is Wikipedia coverage in this area particularly good or were they all perhaps established under a particular national scheme? A paragraph of explanation would add welcome clarity I think. - TB (talk) 17:25, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

Moving Categories
Hi, I'm going to move Iranian villages and cities pages to the better category robotic. For example, I moved pages in Category:Populated places in Jowayin County to better categories "Category:Cities in Jowayin County" and "Category:Villages in Jowayin County". To make it easier for users to reach articles and pages about the villages and cities of Iran that are located in different counties. I want to give order to Iran's villages and cities category and move them from "Category:Populated places in --- County" to better like these ones "Category:villages in --- County" and "Category:Cities in --- County" as I done in my trail edits. If you are agree with these correction, put "*support:" there and if you can explain your reason in English and sign it. Sincerely. --H.b.sh (talk) 16:10, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

Help with sources?
I need help from a Persian speaking editor with finding and translating sources for The Painting Pool. It was originally to be speedied as an article by a blocked editor, but I found just enough in English to where the film appears to pass notability guidelines. However the coverage in English is limited and there seems to be more coverage in Persian, but I don't read the language and Google Translate seems to be particularly unhelpful (or more so than usual). Requesting help on Jafar Panahi page
Hello, A while back I worked on the Jafar Panahi page. I was hoping that someone more knowledgeable than my self could possibly look over the article for accuracy, particularly the sections related to Panahi's arrest. I am not entirely sure that everything is up to date and accurate as it currently reads. I was hoping that someone who reads Farsi could have an easier time finding up to date information for citation. Also, it at all possible I was hoping that someone could at least point me in the right direction to finding more biographical information on Panahi in general, particularly his early life. As far as I know there is no full biography on Panahi in print, but my ability to search in foreign languages is limited. Thank you.--Deoliveirafan (talk) 17:03, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject Iran At Wikimania 2014
Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost
For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Duplication
Hi all,
I have noticed that List of military equipment manufactured in Iran effectively duplicates Equipment of the Iranian Army and, to a lesser extent, articles on other Iranian armed forces which are gradually degenerating into lists. What is the best way to eliminate this duplication? If it were all in one place, it would be easier to fix the other quality problems. bobrayner (talk) 20:46, 11 September 2014 (UTC)
Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

There are currently over 13,000 articles outstanding in Category:Iran articles missing geocoordinate data. It would be a big win if we could geocode these. Does anyone have access to either better machine-readable coordinates than are stored in GNIS, or (perhaps) a better approach to string-matching Arabic place-names than mere literal string comparison?
In addition, since I don't speak Farsi and thus can't do it myself, is anyone here an editor on fawiki, or a Farsi speaker willing to work with me on somehow cross-connecting geocoding efforts between the two projects? A look at the Google translation of fa:ویکیپدیا:ویکیپروژه_مختصاتدهی seems to show that there is a local community already there working on the problem.
A lot of the un-geocoded articles (see, for example, Ab Torsh, Bardsir) seem to have been generated with the help of a 2006 Iranian census dataset: if there was a matching free-and-open geodata file to match this, either directly or indirectly, that would be fantastic, since I could then easily mass-geocode all of these articles using my bot.
If you can help, could you please reply to me on my talk page? -- The Anome (talk) 21:30, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
- Rote creation of thousands of articles from a flat census table seems to be a common cause of this - and other - problems. bobrayner (talk) 22:35, 26 October 2014 (UTC)
WikiProject X is live!
Hello everyone!
You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!
Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.
