Articles for creation
[edit]- Having just seen the latest edition of "The Coat of Arms" from The Heraldry Society, I thought of a new goal/task. This seems to be one of DrPDA's specialties, but here goes. The magazine had an article about the officers of arms that are listed in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. It would be good if we could get a decent biography of each of these heralds. I don't have access to the Dictionary, but someone else may.--dave-- 18:22, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- Well...it seems that the folks at the CUHAGS beat me to the punch. If you look here you will see a list of all the heralds in the ODNB. I'll probably put a list of them on my userpage so that I can work through them one at a time if they are red links.--dave-- 18:14, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- You can view my list as it forms HERE.--dave-- 18:32, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Pre-1970 flag of Fiji
[edit]The article Flag of Fiji claims that prior to 1970, the "colonial ensign ... used a darker shade of blue and displayed the entire Fijian coat of arms as opposed the just the shield". It should be easy for someone familiar with SVG editors etc. to create this version of the flag (see Coat of arms of Fiji for the presumably correct image). Could someone on this project put it together and update the article? Thanks, Andrwsc 00:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Pre-1962 flag of Uganda
[edit]The article Flag of Uganda notes that the current flag was adopted upon independence from the UK. Does anybody know what was used prior to 1962? Was it the Union Flag or a specific ensign? If it was the latter, I would request that it be created and updated in that article. Thanks, Andrwsc 00:18, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Heraldry by Country series
[edit]I've just about finished working on Swedish heraldry, please take a look and leave notes - I appreciate any feedback I can get on how to better improve the article.
I'm now writing German heraldry (it's here if you're that curious), and I wonder — should heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire be included in German heraldry, or should they be separate articles? Any thoughts? Wilhelm meis (talk) 01:04, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for improving this article. I'm currently working on English heraldry (offline, and slowly!). I've left some comments on the talk page, and made some copyedits to the article itself. Regarding the HRE, if there's enough for a separate article, then I would say do one. The list of countries which appears in the template was basically copied from another XYZ in Europe template, with a few other countries added, however all these countries are the modern versions, which don't necessarily correspond to the the countries/entities which existed in the medieval period, when heraldry was flourishing. Thought i would add a little to the information, after reading someones' silly post in a forum.
A trademark is a type of intellectual property, and typically a name, word, phrase, logo, symbol, or a combination of these elements.
This is also the same for Armourial Bearings, (coats of arms, to Yanks). Which are Protected by Intellectual Property Law.
If you use/claim armourial bearings, without, seeking and gaining permission of the holder. You can be sued.
Generally you can use amourial bearings, that are not your own, as long as you state whom is the rights holder. And do not claim them as your own without permission.
Last court case was in the US, 8 years ago. When a certain "Noble titles" website displayed a certain Earl's armourials. The same website also tried to sell another Lords' Title. The next previous court case was in 1996, when a scottish lord sued a US company, in the US for trademark infringement, as the company "nameless" was claiming it as their own.
The most recent court case, judgement was handed down on 21st July, 2011. see ... GENERAL COURT, JUDGMENT OF 25 MAY 2011, T-397/09 This deals mainly with state armourials, but it does paragraph the authority. That is, under Article 7(1)(h) CTMR if a Community trademark application was the heraldic imitation of any protected emblem. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Originalfenir (talk • contribs) 09:01, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Texas flag, vertical display
[edit]Hey guys, I don't know where I should ask this, so I thought I'd put it here. Would any of you vexillology guys like to comment here: Talk:Flag_of_Texas#.22Proper_vertical_display.22_of_the_Texas_flag? I'm wondering if you have any opinions or sources. Flag Image Requests
[edit]I started checking into the first request on the list Image:Norwegian Royal Standard.svg and quickly ran into Image:Norwegian Royal Standard flag.png. Do we really need 2 separate pictures? Kthapelo (talk) 01:07, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Image requests
[edit]- Note: There are a lot more requests at commons:Commons talk:WikiProject Flags. —Nightstallion (?) 22:49, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Add requests for images of coats of arms, flags or other heraldic/vexillological images here Created images should be uploaded to Commons. Heraldry and vexillology articles needing images can be found in the category Heraldry and vexillology articles needing images.
- I didn't know where to post this, so I'll put it here. This is not exactly a request for an image, but more of a request for information about an image. I was perusing the Commons and found this image:
Can anyone provide more information. The description looks Polish to me, but darned if I know. It looks like it may be a grant of arms of some sort and may be usable in an heraldic article. Any ideas?--dave-- 20:41, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- I think it is Polish (the History of Poland category on the Commons version of the page would suggest so). From the description on the image page, I would guess it's a diploma/grant of nobility to Seyfrieda von Rotha in 1464, from the chancellery/chancery of czar/emperor(?) Frederick III (possibly the Holy Roman Emperor; the dates fit). The document would now appear to be in the archives of the archdiocese of Wroclaw. It looks like it might be written in German, but the resolution's not really good enough for me to tell. The file is used in the polish article on nobility. From Ennoblement it looks like arms were granted at the same time. Although there are are couple of hundred Polish coat of arms stubs (as I can verify from assessing most of them over the last week), I can't find this particular one. If you want more info you could try dropping a note on the talk page of the user who uploaded it, User:Steifer, either here or at Commons. Dr pda 21:45, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- The description is Polish alright, and it looks very much like contemporary grants of arms. The style of the drawing is German, so Emperor Frederick III sounds like the most obvious candidate. The seal is also very close to the seal of Charles IV (see: Golden Bull). Although unlikely, it is perhaps wrong to rule out Frederick III of Saxony completely. In Danish history, arms were normally granted upon ennoblement, and in this case, Danish culture is no doubt a copy of German practice. In any case, we need a Wappenrolle of German heraldry in order to make an identification. Very interesting example though, I'd always thought the two horns on the helmet were distinct of Danish heraldry. Valentinian (talk) / (contribs) 22:36, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
- The two-horned crest is definitely not unique to medieval Danish achievements. It shows up in many German armorials. A number of the digitized armorials linked from http://www.s-gabriel.org/heraldry/german.shtml show this type of crest. Sara Uckelman 20:13, 15 October 2009 (GMT+2)
- I does not look as polish coat of arms at all to me. Black color is not so usual, I think that there are some 40 CoA with black shields and most of them should not even be defined as polish. Although Wroclaw is polish now, it has more influence from Germany in past. I checked this CoA in different sources and i cant find this CoA in any work. Tomasz Gajl is the one that is doing fine work on finding coat of arms in Poland, this one is not included on his list. It could be polish but i doubt that it is. I would rather look for Chech area, Moravia, Germany or Preussen, maybee Baltic states. Good luck with the research! Camdan (talk) 19:58, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Two Flag Image Requests - Rodrigues Island and St. Barts
[edit]Hello! I hope this is the right place to make requests (if not I apologize). I usually haven't made Wikipedia flag or image requests in the past, but there are two flags that I would like to see included in Wikipedia (if possible). I don't have any of the skills to create these flags myself, but I was hoping that someone on this project would like to try it.
- The first is the flag of Rodrigues (island), an island dependency in the Indian Ocean controlled by Mauritius. There is a picture of the flag that I found on French Wikipedia on the Rodrigues page. However, when I put it on the web page, I discovered that it was tagged for deletion since it was taken directly from the FOTW website. I was wondering if anyone could try to create and replace the Rodrigues flag with an image that can be used on Wikipedia. Here is the flag on FOTW. [1]
- The second flag that I am requesting (if possible) is for the French dependency of Saint-Barthélemy, which is better known as St. Barts. It was recently politically separated from the neighboring island of Guadeloupe to become its very own French collectivity, a type of territory. However, I have seached and I can't find any images of its unofficial flag on Wikipedia. It is a white flag with the St. Barts coat of arms on it. Here is a picture from FOTW [2] The flag also appears on some St Barts brochures.
I don't have the skills to create these flags myself, since they are both very intricate. However, if someone with more knowledge could try to recreate these flags in a format that can be used on Wikipedia I would really appreciate it! Thank you very much for your time. Have a great day! Scanlan 00:23, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
- Image requests have a better chance if you forward them to WP:GL. They are the ones with the expertise. Valentinian T / C 07:39, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

Three flag requests: Banners of Charles, Prince of Wales
[edit]Hi all. I'm wondering if some enterprising soul could create & upload the following flag (banner) images?
Wales: the banner is based upon the Coat of Arms of the Principality of Wales, (the historic arms of the Kingdom of Gwynedd), which consist of four quadrants, the first and fourth with a red lion on a gold field, and the second and third with a gold lion on a red field. Superimposed is an escutcheon vert bearing the single-arched crown of the Prince of Wales.
Scotland: the banner used is based on two Scottish titles of the heir apparent: Duke of Rothesay and Lord of the Isles. The flag is divided into four quadrants. The first and fourth quadrants include a blue and white checkerboard band in the centre of a gold field. The second and third quadrants include a galley on a white background. A gold inescutcheon bearing the lion rampant of Scotland with a label to indicate the heir apparent is superimposed.
Cornwall: the banner is "sable fifteen bezants Or", that is, a black field bearing fifteen gold coins, which Prince Charles uses in his capacity as Duke of Cornwall.
I'm pants at graphics. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! Prince of Canada t | c 03:21, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Coat of arms images
[edit]- The Coat of arms of Côte d'Ivoire has a typo in it, and is incorrectly colored based on the article. Is anyone in a position to fix this? Thanks! Alan 04:57, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- Image:Warringah coat of arms.svg, needs someone with drawing or coat of arms skills, to create. I certainly can't do it. There is a poor quality image of it on the Warringah Council article here: Image:Warringah-coat-of-arms.jpg and here photo Regards Stravin (talk) 08:34, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Blazon requests
[edit]How would you blazon the Flag of California? — Preceding unsigned comment added by EdwardOConnor (talk • contribs) 22:45, 17 July 2007
- Here's an attempt: Argent a grizzly bear statant proper on a mound vert above the words "CALIFORNIA REPUBLIC" sable; in dexter chief a mullet of five points gules, a base demoted of the same. (I'm not sure about the word "demoted". Whatever is the opposite of "enhanced" is what goes there.) -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 10:06, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Statant for a bear wopuld imply standing -- this looks to me, by analogy with a lion, to be passant -- 195.92.40.49 15:38, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
You're right.-- I. Pankonin (t/c) 04:28, 1 December 2007 (UTC) Passant means with the left front paw in the air. If a bear was on two legs it would be "statant on two legs". -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 04:34, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Statant for a bear wopuld imply standing -- this looks to me, by analogy with a lion, to be passant -- 195.92.40.49 15:38, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Anyone want to have a go at proofing the blazon for the Company of the Wolf, and the Wilkins arms at the side of the box? LightHorseman1216 (talk) 12:29, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
- Wolf company sable, a wolf's head (roaring) couped argent, upon a helm proper a wolf sable langued gules statant couped (at the waist), but I'm not sure how to designate that it's roaring or how it's couped. Are you sure fleury is the correct term? Looks more like something along the lines of dancetty to me.
- Wilkins: per bend sinister or and gules a clenched gauntlet (upright?) sable, upon a helm proper a peacock in his splendour proper on a coronet (of some sort) Or on a torse of the field
- Those are my best guesses. - [ roux ] [x] 12:42, 17 October 2008 (UTC)
John R. Drake
[edit]Hello Wikipedians! I am researching John R. Drake both online and in local records. His family seems quite important and other members may be added to Wikipedia. I found an important source here that identifies his Drake heraldry as "a shield argent, and a hibern tailel [sic?] nowed sable." Does this look legit, and if so, could someone illustrate this? Also, what the heck is "hibern tailel"? Thanks! NTK (talk) 00:02, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Images from heraldryshop
[edit]On [www.heraldryshop.biz] [dead link ] I am adding (slowly) a large number of images from picture albums, cigarette cards, cinderella's etc. Most of the material is pre WWII and a lot (like the Wills's borough arms) pre WWI and as far as I am concerned all can be uploaded to wikipedia, as long as the original site is mentioned. Presently there are over 4000 images on the site. I am not in the mood to upload all to commons, but if someone has the time, go ahead !Knorrepoes (talk) 12:29, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Heraldry template
[edit]There are a few heraldry/blazon sub-topics that are not presented in a way that is easy to locate. (Well, I found them but I wish that they'd all been in one place...) I think they would be useful and at home in the Heraldry template. In particular : Field (heraldry), Variation of the field, Division of the field, Tincture (heraldry), Attitude_(heraldry), Ordinary (heraldry) & Charge (heraldry). I thought about adding them myself, but I am not sure it makes sense to just plunk them down somewhere. They might belong grouped with a particular element and I'm not familiar enough with the topic. - BalthCat (talk) 03:53, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Most of what you suggest exists as Template:Blazon, though a couple of your suggestions could stand to be added there. Dr pda (talk) 04:05, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
- Ah, hooray for me managing to miss that at the bottom. Why "Series"? - BalthCat (talk) 00:08, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Stamford coat of arms
[edit]Per pale dexter side Gules three Lions passant guardant in pale Or and the sinister side chequy Or and Azure. I had a go at this myself all was going (reasonably) well until the "chequy" part. I was able to "cheq" but all over the alpha region.... I am not yet proficient in this stuff. Rich Farmbrough, 13:07, 20 November 2010 (UTC).
- Anyone? Rich Farmbrough, 23:01, 27 December 2010 (UTC).
- I'm not proficient in the nomenclature of heraldry so I'm just not sure what you want to change. If you can explain a little more I'm sure I could help. Kthapelo (talk) 21:44, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
- @Rich Farmbrough: It appears you have it correct but, the chequy seems a bit unnatural. Try to get the checker squares to evenly meet at the sinister edge, there are some checkers getting cut-off. The same goes vertically. --Xavier (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Rich Farmbrough: Furthermore, a chequy should always be even so that the second tincture ends at the sinister side and the pale (bottom). --Xavier (talk) 00:11, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Rich Farmbrough: Also the lions should all be centered as much as possible by default since the blazon did not specify otherwise. They look a little off and crammed. --Xavier (talk) 00:14, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Rich Farmbrough: Lastly the blazon did not mention "armed and langued azure". Which your lions currently have. Since the blazon does not specify a tincture for the lions parts, than the tincture is of the entire lion, in this case, "or". Your lions parts should all be or. --Xavier (talk) 00:19, 19 November 2015 (UTC)
