Defined in its most general terms, rhetoric is the art of making things matter. While rhetoric comes in lots of flavors (e.g., oratorical, visual, digital), this semester will focus on speeches by public figures and learning a method for analyzing them. Rhetorical criticism is a method by which we analyze and judge the effectiveness, truthfulness, ethicality, and/or artistry of public speeches. In short, the critic asks, “What’s going on here?” And, “what do we make of that?”

While our focus of inquiry will be public address, your textbook and readings will introduce you to other areas of rhetorical criticism. Understanding the other areas of rhetorical criticism provides you an opportunity to explore the richness of the discipline and the various methods rhetoric scholars use. Focusing on public address for your seminar paper underscores the importance of public address to the foundation of rhetoric. Because of the it is campaign season, students will be required to explore public addresses by candidates for office (local, state, federal).

Students will: • Understand rhetoric theories and methods • Analyze artifacts using conceptual resources in rhetoric • Evaluate public addresses • Assemble an original rhetorical criticism project
