This course examines Latinx literary achievements in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Latinx writers challenge us to think in complex ways about borders, immigration, language, race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, prejudice and discrimination, hybridity and syncretism. Our selection draws from and speaks to Chicanx, Central American, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and American literary traditions, among others. As we read, we will consider how Latinx literature allows us to see ourselves and others and makes ethical and aesthetic interventions in contemporary American culture.
