Feminist Art is often viewed from an exclusively Western lens. This course is designed to broaden this viewpoint by discussing contemporary visual arts practices within a global context. We will begin by examining discontents among women artists in the nineteenth century that culminated in the Feminist Art movement formed in the United States in 1960s/70s, and continue up to the present day to analyze contemporary works of art made by women (and those that identify as women) around the world that resist patriarchal norms. The relationship between feminism, gender, and sexuality will be explored. Feminist and postcolonial theory will be applied.
