- Mike Powell (Warwicks,Glamorgan,Northants) ? Sumant81 (talk) 12:50, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- I think the Northants Powell is a Mark. All of them are M. J. Powell, though. Johnlp (talk) 12:58, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- Just beaten me to what I was going to post,Yeah even I saw one of them is a Mark and all are MJ,however the other data seems to match Sumant81 (talk) 13:01, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- My mistake. Had remembered them all as Mike. Sumant can take it. Tintin 13:34, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Here are a set of pairs ,who is the missing player in the first pair.?
Billy Murdoch:_______, Syed Kirmani:Rakep Patel , Ian Bell:Ben Laughlin Sumant81 (talk) 17:49, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- hint-The pairs are for test, odis and t20s respectively. The second element in the pair will keep changing, the first one though is a constant.Sumant81 (talk) 02:46, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ok let me rephrase it this way, what firsts did Billy Murdoch,Syed Kirmani,Ian Bell achieve respectively in tests, odis and t20s ? Sumant81 (talk) 09:34, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- bigger hint-The respective first occurrences were in 1884,1974,2006 Sumant81 (talk) 14:34, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- Karl Turner. The pairs are the first and last cricketers who have taken catches as substitute fielders in different forms of the game till date. Wikimaze (talk) 15:17, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
- That is the one .Billy Murdoch curiously took a sub catch fielding for England while playing for Australia.Well done and over to you. Sumant81 (talk) 15:39, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]This event occurred in the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier as well as the Twenty20 Quadrangular (in Kenya), 2007/08 .When did it happen for the first time? Sumant81 (talk) 13:38, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
Not confident here as it's not really an "event" but both tournaments have a mix of official and unofficial internationals. The first time that happened was the 1994/95 World Series with Australia A... --Travis Basevi (talk) 13:51, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- A tournament where some matches were ODIs and some were not? Ovshake (talk) 14:35, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Yes Both of you have it correctly.Travis got there first so its over to him.The tournaments that had a mix of ListA and Internationals.(and its equivalent in T20s) .I did not know how else to phrase it other than an event or occurrence, anyways that's that. Sumant81 (talk) 14:55, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]What did 5 of the 22 players in the inaugural Test in 1877 have in common? --Travis Basevi (talk) 15:36, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- They bowled in the England first innings. :-D Ovshake (talk) 15:39, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well done, all yours. No, not really. I guess I should be a little more specific. As far as I can tell (it's next to impossible to be definitive) it's a record that's never been beaten, and has only been equalled twice: both in the 1934 Ashes. --Travis Basevi (talk) 15:53, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Not sure but is it that there were 5 Tom's in the first test match. There were 5 Williams in the 1934 Ashes ? Sumant81 (talk) 16:39, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
- Exactly it. And there were 5 Bills in the 4th and 5th Tests in 1934 - Bowes, Brown, Ponsford, Woodfull and O'Reilly. --Travis Basevi (talk) 17:49, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]__________,Mahendra Singh Dhoni,Jeroen Smits,William Porterfield,Mahela Jayawardene is the complete set.And the missing link is ? Sumant81 (talk) 03:36, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- I should add that it is T20 related. Sumant81 (talk) 05:40, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
All of them have led their respective sides and did not score a run, take a wicket or hold a catch in a T20I match. Anything on those lines? Ovshake (talk) 05:25, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

- Shoaib Malik. Captains of the national teams in T20I tournament finals that took place till date. Wikimaze (talk) 07:40, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
For whatever reason it was stated by the organisers that the Quadrangular tournament in Kenya in Sep 2007 had no winner, so the missing link is "nobody". --Travis Basevi (talk) 12:00, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Thats it.These are the winning teams captains in the T20 tournaments held so far. There was no winning team in the first tournament since the reason given was these were warm up games.Over to Travis. Sumant81 (talk) 13:46, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]What ODI list is this: Wasim Akram 858, Sanath Jayasuriya 836, Muttiah Muralitharan 754, Adam Gilchrist 751, Shaun Pollock 694, Sachin Tendulkar 686, Chaminda Vaas 667... --Travis Basevi (talk) 14:39, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- Clue: for one of the above players you can find his figure purely by looking at his career figures. For the rest you need to dig a little deeper. --Travis Basevi (talk) 20:39, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
- I think I have it,but not sure how to put it.So these are the number of times a player has contributed something on the field of play.Adam Gilchrist has 417c+55s+279Batting Innings =751.Now for the others, for example Wasim Akram 88c+280battingInnings+502Wickets =870.However this involves 12 caught and bowled's.So deduct 12 things that has been counted twice (once for catch and once for wicket) and we have 870-12 =858.Sumant81 (talk) 03:32, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
- Very well done, I had anticipated having to give a couple of more clues than this. It can roughly be phrased as "most appearances in a batting scorecard" (excluding DNBs, absents, run outs, sub catches, etc). The Test list is boring as bowlers get to bat a lot more often and so it more or less looks like the the top wicket takers list but with Warne still on top. Anyway, excellent, over to you. --Travis Basevi (talk) 10:19, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Who is the 12th man for this ODI team.? Dave Callaghan,Xavier Marshall,James Marshall,Mahendra Singh Dhoni,Feiko Kloppenburg,Kapil Dev,Trevor Chappell,Dinesh Mongia,Robbie Kerr,Wayne Larkins,Brian McMillan ? Sumant81 (talk) 07:13, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Even though I see people getting the connection, the 12th guy might be tough to find.So here is the bigger hint. One of the guys in the squad of 11 should technically not even be there but for a quirk. It is the same quirk that will lead you to the 12th guy.Sumant81 (talk) 07:30, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- The list is in decreasing order and here are the numbers that you can associate with some of them Dave Callaghan 124,Xavier Marshall 122,James Marshall 111,...Trevor Chappell 88. Sumant81 (talk) 13:33, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- Can't understand how Dhoni ended up where he is. The rest look straightforward. Tintin 16:11, 25 May 2009 (UTC)
- And he is the quirk that will lead you to the answer.Dhoni is at 106.If you know why, then your answer is also there. Sumant81 (talk) 01:59, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Ok this is proving to be a toughie,so another hint, the reason Dhoni is there ,is because I was considering performances for a team rather than all his career innings. Sumant81 (talk) 08:21, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
- Shaun Pollock. Wikimaze (talk) 10:17, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

- Shaun Pollock is correct. The list represents the players with the highest difference between their highest scores and second highest scores while playing for a particular team.Mahendra Singh Dhoni is in because of innings of 139 and 33 for AsiaXI,and it is the same reason Pollock makes it with scores of 130 & 58 for Africa XI.The idea was to make the answer guessable after the hint and hence I included the quirk.Wikimaze please ask a question now. Q1010
[edit]Should be a sitter.A and B are two captains at the start of a famous tour.A wins the toss and chooses to bat on a green pitch. B seemingly overjoyed at the prospect of bowling on a green top ,starts walking back to the pavilion only to find that the pitch is currently being removed of all the grass.Knowing A and B will give out the answer,so tell me how was it possible for the pitch to be altered after the toss was done. Sumant81 (talk) 10:12, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- The famous series was marked by the end of A as a captain for other unavoidable reasons, while B's career was ended soon after in the next series (after this rather poor series).Ofcourse the answer is not to guess A and B,but knowing that would give you the answerSumant81 (talk) 17:07, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
- Seems like this group has gone to sleep or all are baffled which I know cannot be true.A was more famous in the 90s as a cricket administrator.Sumant81 (talk) 09:17, 29 May 2009 (UTC)
- last hint before I give out the answer,B is more famous as a commentator these days ,while A was at the helm of a controversy in the late 90s. Sumant81 (talk) 04:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- Was this Ali Bacher and Ian Chappell? I think the explanation was that the toss was held more than 30 minutes before the start of the game. wisems (talk) 20:15, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- last hint before I give out the answer,B is more famous as a commentator these days ,while A was at the helm of a controversy in the late 90s. Sumant81 (talk) 04:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- Correct. It actually was Ali Bacher and Bill Lawry on the 1970 tour of SAfrica.Ali Bacher called Bill Lawry out for toss even earlier than 30 minutes before the play was to begin. The rules state that the pitch can be altered for upto 30 minutes before play,so once he knew he was batting first,he asked the groundsmen to remove the pitch of the grass. This has a mention in Bill Lawry profile and hence I could not give out the name. [edit]What Twenty20 International record was set in this game, beating the previous record set the day before? wisems (talk) 20:29, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
- A couple of hints - it's a batting-related record, and it was set by Scotland in each case. wisems (talk) 06:04, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Is it the slowest run rate in a winning chase in a T20 international? --KingStrato (talk) 07:18, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- No, not that. (At least if that is true - I haven't checked - it's a coincidence.) wisems (talk) 09:06, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Another hint? This record has a fixed upper limit, and I was surprised to find that this is the closest anyone has got to that limit. wisems (talk) 16:07, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
- No, not that. (At least if that is true - I haven't checked - it's a coincidence.) wisems (talk) 09:06, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
- Somewhat related to KingStrato - is this the win with the lowest highest *individual* strike rate?
- Think longest rather than slowest. wisems (talk) 06:40, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Maximum balls faced in a win when not making more than run a ball. The earlier game saw Poonia facing 54 balls while Watson faced 61 balls in the game in question ( and both did not have a SR > 100) ?. Sumant81 (talk) 07:08, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- No, it's much less complicated than that. If you can work out why there's a fixed upper limit, then that should get you to the answer. To help you out, this record does not relate to either the team or an individual batsman. wisems (talk) 09:31, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- Is it the slowest run rate in a winning chase in a T20 international? --KingStrato (talk) 07:18, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
How about longest partnership in terms of balls faced - the opening partnership lasted for 17.2 overs (and the maximum would be 20 overs) --Roberry (talk) 18:18, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- That's exactly it. Here's the full list. There have been surprisingly (to me, anyway) few that have lasted even 10 overs. wisems (talk) 18:45, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
- The new look Cricinfo has messed up the statsguru page with the sort results by and result qualification tags missing their fields.Did you manually construct the url? Sumant81 (talk) 05:10, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- You're right, there is something a bit odd about it. If you search for all partnerships then it doesn't show the number of balls, but if you put a filter on the number of runs (e.g. > 100) it does, and if you then remove that filter, it still does. wisems (talk) 07:35, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
- The new look Cricinfo has messed up the statsguru page with the sort results by and result qualification tags missing their fields.Did you manually construct the url? Sumant81 (talk) 05:10, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm still getting used to the new CI. Ovshake (talk) 11:05, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
- I don't like it. I will be using other sites from now on. --KingStrato (talk) 11:27, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry lads, will be fixing the statsguru problems and cleaning it up in the next week, unfortunately it's been pretty low on the priority list so far. Sorry to hear you're moving on KingStrato, you really think the changes are that significant and/or poor to forget about using the site altogether? --Travis Basevi (talk) 14:41, 7 June 2009 (UTC)
- Travis, I know this is not a place to discuss the new look of CI, but I must mention here that for most of us on this quiz, I'm sure Statsguru is the most frequently used module (possibly next to live coverages). If there's a problem with Statsguru we have every reason to feel agitated and impatient. Then again, we're definitely a minority considering the captive followers of CI. We have loved Statsguru over the years, and the slightest fall in standards hurts us. Of course, all this is my opinion, but somehow I get the feeling that not many would oppose me. Once again, I'm fully aware of the fact that this is not a place to discuss this, and do apologise if I've violated rules of any kind. Ovshake (talk) 03:23, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Q1012
[edit]Sorry it took so long for the next question. What century related event did Jacques Kallis manage 13 times, followed by Rahul Dravid and Matthew Hayden with 11. Conversely Alec Stewart never did this in 15 attempts --Roberry (talk) 05:02, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Is it to do with achieving centuries in consecutive matches? --Cowboydan78 (talk) 06:32, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
That wasn't the answer I was looking for. I'll see if we get any more guesses before I post a hint --Roberry (talk) 18:00, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
I looked at centuries in each innings, number of centuries away from home, centuries as captain, centuries from different batting positions, unbeaten centuries, and I'm just not making the numbers add up. It isn't anything to do with top score, because both Kallis and Stewart have never scored double centuries, while Dravid and Hayden both have. Stewart was never out lbw after a century, but Kallis only was lbw twice. It isn't centuries without sixes, because Stewart hit one six in his 173 against New Zealand. And it isn't being the only centurion in the match, because Stewart has at least once. I have no idea what I should check now. Jenigmat429 (talk) 16:24, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to disappoint, but it does have something to do with top scores. Try looking back at Alec Stewart and see if you see anything about all his centuries. I do hope I haven't screwed up with my question! --Roberry (talk) 18:50, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
The first thing that came to mind was breaking his own top score, but Alec Stewart has done this twice after reaching triple digits for the first time, with his 148 and 190. Alec Stewart has hit at least one century in all four innings in Tests, and his batting position can't be related to it. All four of those batsmen have hit a fifty in the same match as a century.Jenigmat429 (talk) 02:53, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Try looking at the scorecards of Alec Stewart's centuries and it should become clear what I am looking for. Maybe I should reword the question - What did Alec Stewart manage to do every time he scored a century, but Jacques Kallis failed to do on 13 occasions --Roberry (talk) 15:37, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Every time Alec Stewart scored a Test century, he was also the top scorer in the innings. On 13 occasions, Jacques Kallis scored a century, but was outscored by someone else in the same innings (on two occasions, by two people). I haven't checked Dravid and Hayden, but the event is presumably 'scoring a Test century, but not top-scoring in the innings'.--AllylViolinPudding (talk) 17:14, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
That's the one - Alec Stewart did top score each time he scored a century although he tied with Mark Butcher on one occasion. Darryl Cullinan is the only other player to do this and score more than 10 centuries. The next question is yours --Roberry (talk) 17:58, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah! I checked that, when I looked for being the lone centurion in the match, and I must have missed one or so. Nice call. 71.113.169.166 (talk) 20:11, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Q1013
[edit]Aaargh. I've just spent an hour on the new Statsguru researching a question, then Googled my answer to see if someone had thought of it before. Sure enough, it's already been asked several hundred questions ago on this quiz! The new question's related to it, though...
Which ODI record is held by Steve Waugh, followed by Carl Hooper, then Malcolm Marshall? The 'inverse' of this record was formerly held by Shaukat Dukanwala, although was broken earlier this year (I fear I would spoil the question by saying by which player - if people struggle [which they probably won't] then I'll name him)--AllylViolinPudding (talk) 23:18, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
I remember that Shaukat Dukanwala used to be the oldest person to win a World Cup Man-of-the-Match Award, so could it be that Steve Waugh was the youngest person to win a World Cup MoM? I think it's either that or youngest ODI MoM. Jenigmat429 (talk) 01:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
- I think that the person you said broke the record probably was Sanath Jayasuriya, as the timing fits, and he was significantly older than Dukanwala. This would indicate to me that it means that you intended youngest ODI Man-of-the-Match awards for Waugh, Hooper and Marshall, though I'm finding it difficult to confirm this.Jenigmat429 (talk) 01:43, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Most number of wickets in career without a five-wicket haul. The inverse is least number of wickets with a five-wicket haul and Doug Bollinger holds this at present. Wikimaze (talk) 08:31, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Bang on, Wikimaze. I thought mentioning Bollinger would definitely give it away. I was going to ask virtually the same question for Tests, but found that Q803 had already done it, and the inverse (Mike Hendrick) had been covered in an 'Ask Bearders' column from a few years ago. I didn't know about Dukanwala's oldest MoM award (for his 5-29 in his final match, bringing his career wickets to 6). An accidental red herring, I suppose. And, of course, Dukanwala will almost certainly reclaim his bowling record as long as Bollinger's around! Ask away with the next question, Wikimaze.--AllylViolinPudding (talk) 10:11, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Both Kaneria and Kapali are Hindu, though Kaneria wasn't the first to play for Pakistan. However, the first, Anil Dalpat, only got 9 Tests, so Kaneria would be the first to play anything over 9 Tests. Because Kapali has played in 17, could it be first Hindu to get over 10 Tests?Jenigmat429 (talk) 14:27, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- I think that's Tapash Baisya with 21 tests. All that I could think of was the 20-20 century. But the record's to be for test cricket... - Godof86 (talk) 22:44, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
- Correct! The Answer I was looking for was that Alok Kapali was the first non-muslim to represent
- Bangladesh in Test cricket, equal with Tapash Baisya. The other clues were Gul Mohammad was the first Muslim to represent India after Independence. Wallis Mathias being the first non-Muslim to represent Pakistan Danish Kaneira and indeed Anil Dalpat being the first players of Hindu background to play for Pakistan. Over to you Jenigmat429 — Wattmaster (talk) 03:14, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Correct! The Answer I was looking for was that Alok Kapali was the first non-muslim to represent
- That is incorrect. Ranjan Das was the first hindu to represent Bangladesh in its inaugural test[10].And your hint also said similar firsts, but clearly Danish Kaneria was not a first with Anil Dalpat being ahead. Sumant81 (talk) 03:49, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Can we settle for Non-Muslim then ? — or Shall we strike off this question ? !! — Wattmaster (talk) 07:34, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Even if it is non-muslim it still would be Ranjan Das.I think it would be fair to award the points and the rights for next question to wisems ,who got the first part right. The second part is an incorrect question, the decision is yours. Sumant81 (talk) 08:37, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- The only other first Kapali has is a hundred in 20-20 matches, but again, ICL isn't official... -Godof86 (talk) 09:38, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit]OK, I wasn't expecting to be back here after only answering half a question, but here goes! What occurrence from this game was unique in all international cricket, until it was repeated in this one? wisems (talk) 15:53, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- The innings were played on different pitches? Ovshake (talk) 20:22, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- No, this is something to do with an 'achievement' (for want of a better word) by one of the players featuring in each of the games. wisems (talk) 20:58, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
- Can't see anything obvious from the scorecards ! Did somebody have a runner through out the course of their innings? Sumant81 (talk) 03:35, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- It's nothing to do with what happened during the games themselves. It's about the appearance of the two key players in the context of their careers. 17 other players have done something similar, but for these two players, these games represented an extra twist on it. As a bit of a clue, this occurrence could conceivably happen again in an Ireland game in the next few years. wisems (talk) 06:20, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Can't see anything obvious from the scorecards ! Did somebody have a runner through out the course of their innings? Sumant81 (talk) 03:35, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ok So i think the connection is,coming back to play for your first country that you represented in international cricket.Billy Midwinter did it having played for Australia and then England and again Australia in that match. Gavin Hamilton did it having played for Scotland and then England and then Scotland again. Eoin Morgan could conceivably do it ,if he plays for Ireland again.Sumant81 (talk) 06:38, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit]An incident from the past.In this match Peter Sleep and Bruce Yardley, the overnight batsmen came out on Day 3,without any pads, gloves, protectors batted for exactly one ball and then declared. Why was this done ? Sumant81 (talk) 14:38, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- To get the pitch rolled? Ovshake (talk) 15:47, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- You are very close.Remember that rolling of the pitch rights lies with the batting side,so if they declare, the other side may have chosen not to roll the pitch right ..? For some reason they had to bat the one extra delivery on that morning.Sumant81 (talk) 15:58, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Possibly the pitch was already crumbling. Since Yardley and Sleep were already successful in the first innings, they wanted to test their seamers. So they used the heavy roller to bind the pitch and increase the bounce to give their seamers a chance. Not that it helped, though... :) Ovshake (talk) 16:20, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Not the reason ,but I will give it to you, since you atleast got to the rolling of pitch part right. The story goes like this Kim Hughes who was the captain for the tour, but resting this match had asked at end of Day 2 for the pitch to be rolled .At the start of the day 3,the Australians wanted to declare, but the umpires prevented them doing so ,saying that the pitch had already been instructed to be rolled and hence they can't ask Central Zone to bat without them playing. So they came out for a ball on Day 3 with the idea being just to declare. Sumant81 (talk) 16:52, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, so it's the other way round. They didn't bat to get it rolled, they had to bat because they had got it rolled. Ovshake (talk) 17:05, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yup..that is correct :) Sumant81 (talk) 17:10, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Q1018
[edit]What world cup achievement was
- set by West Indies and Australia in the 1975 world cup,
- broken by West Indies in the 1979 world cup,
- equalled by England in the 1983 and 1987 world cups,
- equalled by as many as six teams (including the current holders, West Indies and England) in the 1992 world cup,
- equalled by England in the 1996 world cup,
- equalled by Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in the 1999 world cup,
- equalled by Australia, Kenya, New Zealand and Zimbabwe in the 2003 world cup,
- equalled by Ireland and West Indies in the 2007 world cup,
- equalled by New Zealand and Pakistan, but BROKEN by Australia in the 2007 world cup T20,
- equalled (the new record) by Ireland in the 2009 world cup T20, thereby ensuring that Australia and Ireland are the current world cup record holders? Ovshake (talk) 17:45, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Hint: note WHICH teams have achieved the feat. Ovshake (talk) 06:32, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- Further hint: the six teams achieving the feat in 1992 were Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Now look at the teams closely and try to get what's common to ALMOST all of them. Ovshake (talk) 14:08, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
Big hint: Pakistan is the only Asian team on the entire list. Ovshake (talk) 20:23, 19 June 2009 (UTC)
- All these teams have beaten teams from the sub-continent in the respective world cups. I thought it could be the number of victories against the Asian teams but that does not seem to work out - considering Ireland, Kenya etc. who only have an odd victory or two. I tried to track (number of victories - no. of defeats) which looked good till the 1987 world cup. Anything along these lines? SeaTurtlesMate (talk) 06:04, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- hmmm..but the exception is Zimbabwe who had not beaten them in '92 and '03 editions. SeaTurtlesMate (talk) 06:09, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
You're almost there, but you've got one step too much. You're beating around the bush, but winning wasn't necessary here. See, India beat Pakistan in the 1992 world cup, so why isn't India's name on the list? Ovshake (talk) 14:21, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Teams to have played against the most number of teams from Asia / the Subcontinent (or rather I will keep to the Subcontinent as I remember UAE playing in a world cup) in a world cup tournament. In 1975, WI and Australia both played against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In 1979, West Indies played India, Pakistan and Sri lanka, (Pakistan in the semis). England must have done the same in 1983 and 1987 ( did not care to check it up, but they played India in the 1983 semis and reached the finals in 1987). Of course in 1992, all played all, so everyone but for India, Pakistan and Sri lanka will get to the record. Pakistan played all others in the 2008 T20 WC. In 2007 Australia (who played against all four of the current sub-continent teams, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) holds the record, and I have not checked, but Ireland must have teid with them in this T20 WC. This will not be broken unless Nepal / Bhutan / Maldives etc get a go at a world cup. - Godof86 (talk) 17:05, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
That's it. Speaking absolutely technically, it should've been teams SCHEDULED TO PLAY (the West Indies vs Sri Lanka match in 1979 got abandoned) all Asian teams (England's match against UAE is included), but given how close you came, I think I should give it to you. Ovshake (talk) 17:09, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ovshake,am I missing something here.By 1992 world cup,6 teams had all played against Asian teams. In the 1996 world cup,England ,SAfrica,NZ all played UAE,so didn't they all break the record. And in 1999,amongst these three only NZ played Bangladesh,so didnt they go to the top? (This is assuming UAE is included)Sumant81 (talk) 17:33, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- I believe Ovshake is looking for the answer for the number of asian teams played against in one world cup tournament. - Godof86 (talk) 17:59, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ahaa..gotcha,was thinking on wrong lines ! Sumant81 (talk) 18:08, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Q1019
[edit]My first question here, so early apologies for any mistakes. Only five cricketers who have played first class cricket for Bengal / West Bengal have captained India in international matches. Name them all. - Godof86 (talk) 18:21, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
- Would that be SC Ganguly [11], MH Mankad[12], P Roy[13], In Tests.
- Syed Karim [14] captained India's Under-19 team in a Test vs Australia in 1984-85. Manoj Tiwary [15] captained India's Under-19 home ODI series vs England[16]in 2004-05? — Wattmaster (talk) 01:12, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Would that be SC Ganguly [11], MH Mankad[12], P Roy[13], In Tests.
Jhulan Goswami is currently the Indian captain, so she has achieved the feat. Ovshake (talk) 01:16, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- ... and so has Rumeli Dhar, who has led India in an ODI. Ovshake (talk) 01:20, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
My bad, should have specified, I am not considering under 19s, only full internationals. -Godof86 (talk)
- And the question somewhat falls flat on its face and becomes a simple statistics question, that was not my intention. Ovshake gets it. I didn't notice Rumeli Dhar captaining India [17]There is of course a sixth, who captained India in full internationals, but that's for another question, hopefully. -Godof86 (talk) 04:57, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- First-class cricket. whom represented Bengal at First-class level , I would have thought would have qualified as a correct answer, as f-c cricket is still the main stay of mens cricket. Just my two bob's worth for a bit of a whinge ! — Wattmaster (talk) 04:48, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Godof86, I believe you didn't sign off once, after "but that's for another question, hopefully.". Is it so? If yes, please do sign.Ovshake (talk) 05:04, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
There is a SIXTH person? Someone who has led India in Men's or Women's Tests, ODIs, T20Is? Ovshake (talk) 05:02, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- I still can't see how this is the case when the question clearly asked whom played played first class cricket for Bengal / West Bengal, Youth tests and ODIs are Internationals in my book. So what is the correct answer ? SC Ganguly ,MH Mankad,P Roy,
Syed Karim& Manoj Tiwary are the 5 whom have captained. I'm feeling a bit ripped off here! —Wattmaster (talk) 05:16, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Well, I was not considering youth matches, only full internationals. So Vinoo Mankad, Pankaj Roy, Sourav Ganguly, Jhulan Goswami and Rumeli Dhar is correct. Although, Wattmaster, you do correctly mention that I did not specify that youth matches will not be considered. And yes, there is a sixth full international captain of India as well.-Godof86 (talk) 05:33, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Let me put it this way, even if we consider the under 19's as internationals, the captains of those matches did not captain the Indian national team, but only India's under-19 squad. -Godof86 (talk) 05:39, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- So, OK then how can having played first class cricket for Bengal / West Bengal be considered by both Jhulan Goswami and Rumeli Dhar as an answer, logically speaking ? You did request first class cricketers , perhaps we should take it to the forum for adjudication in all fairness. — Wattmaster (talk) 05:46, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- I agree, an was just about to suggest that. I will be glad to give it to Wattmaster, if the forum suggests so. And anyway, does anyone know why only Tests, ODIs and T20s for women are considered first-class matches ? - Godof86 (talk) 05:54, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

To add to the confusion, I might add that the women's teams is called India Women (liekwise Australia Women etc), and the kids are called India Under-19s (likewise the other countries). Ovshake (talk) 06:18, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Let's not confuse Godof86 here on his debut. Can we share half a point each, and you ask the question, Wattmaster? Since there are no written rules anywhere we need to come to a truce somewhere, and no one else in the group don't really seems to be participating. However, in the past we've seen questions of the form "what's common to..." being asked, and a technically correct answer being responded with "that wasn't the answer I was looking for", so I guess a lot rests with the quizmaster. Ovshake (talk) 06:18, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and before we slip... can we have some hint about the sixth player? Ovshake (talk) 06:21, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
So this is it
- First class matches - Normally referred to mens cricket only.
- International matches -Both mens and womens cricket.Since we have mens and womens international.
Based on the ambiguity of the question -I go with Ovshake ,split points(since the quiz master expected the womens cricketer names) and award rights to Wattmaster who got there first.I think that is the fair decision.Wattmaster please ask the next question . Sumant81 (talk) 06:28, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, we needed someone neutral to adjudicate. :) However, the mystery of the sixth person still remains unsolved. Ovshake (talk) 06:31, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- You can download the ICC classification on matches here [[18]] refer to paragraph 6, under Other ICC Regulations , for those interested. The ICC has considered Women's Cricket a seperate grouping for a while now. — Wattmaster (talk) 06:35, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Ovshake, here's a cryptic kind of a hint for the sixth player. I tend to describe him among friends as a rich man's Laxmi Rattan Shukla. A very similar kind of cricketer. But he did captain India. And I did not answer your previous question directly for a reason. -Godof86 (talk) 06:53, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Did he lead India for a COMPLETE match? I'm really confused regarding this one. I can see that it's a HE... Ovshake (talk) 01:44, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- I know that Dhoni has both played club cricket and Sehwag an exhibition match in Kolkata, but they don't really count. Ovshake (talk) 01:49, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- For more than one match. They were proper international matches, too. - Godof86 (talk) 16:50, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Wild guess, this one, as well: qualifying to play for Champions league for three different teams? Dirk Nannes and David Warner and Cameron White... Ovshake (talk) 01:26, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- Clue:- It's actually a record that realistically one out of the two players could acheive in September, I should clarify that, but it's not an outside chance of not occurring for both players I'm looking for. There could have been three players vying for it, but County promotion/relegation put paid to that for this season. There are already three members of the club so far to date. — Wattmaster (talk) 11:26, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- Phil Hughes 1000 runs in debut season is one? Sumant81 (talk) 14:20, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
- No , not Hughes — Wattmaster (talk) 10:02, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- You must be looking at Marcus North as the guy who will have few realistic chances of making the record. And the guy who would not make it this year will be Ryan Harris. -Godof86 (talk) 13:58, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
- Another Clue :- It's a Record that can only be acheived in the Championship. I'll drop a big hint tomorrow if no one gets close. — Wattmaster (talk) 11:45, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

- First class century against every other county.Justin Langer has missed against Lancashire so far and could do it by Sept. Is the other unrealistic one Stuart Law who has missed out against Essex? Sumant81 (talk) 03:01, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yeppas That's it. JL Langer and SG Law both need to score a
Century in their respective upcoming September 9th and 23rd County games to achieve a‘full-house’ of centuries against all counties. Currently JL Langer’s highest score against Lancashire is 76, whilst SG Law’s highest score against Essex is 80 [19]which will enable them to potentially join this ‘club’ here [20]. SG Law’s shift to Derbyshire in 2009 has given him this opportunity as he hasn’t played against Essex since September 2005 as they have been in different divisions to his previous county side, Lancashire due to the Promotion/Relegation of system of the Championship. All be it a slim chance of happening as he’s been primarily selected for List-A matches this year by Derbyshire. Over to you Sumant81 — Wattmaster (talk) 08:07, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
