[edit]Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.
Outcomes
[edit]- Submitted a proposal on 31st May 2018 to the Repository Fringe 2018 conference for a 10 x 10 presentation (10 slides in 10 minutes) on Wiki Wicca: the Wikidata in the Classroom project importing the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database.
- Took part in the end-of-day panel session at the Digital Day of Ideas on 16 May 2018, an annual showcase and networking event for digital scholarship across the University of Edinburgh, featuring workshops, seminars and invited speakers from the wider Digital Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences community. The panel discussed the place of the university (not just Edinburgh but The University) at this stage of the digital society, and the role of arts, humanities, and social science research, in the wider discussions surrounding our increasing reliance on the digital.
- Attended two Data in the City events organised by the Edinburgh Living Lab.
- Presented on the Edinburgh residency at the ALT Scotland event on 11 June 2018.
- Held a catchup meeting with Hannah Evans at Wikimedia UK on 6 June to discuss the new Wikimedia UK booklet of Wikipedia in the Classroom case studies.
- Attended book launch of EqualBITE on 29 May 2018 which has includes a recipe for how to run a Wikipedia editathon to address gender inequality through contributing new articles about missing women role models in order to increase their visibility and help inspire others.
- Met with Gavin Willshaw, digital curator at the University of Edinburgh, on 7 June 2018 to plan a University of Edinburgh editathon for Library & University Collection staff.
- Met with Theo Andrew, Scholarly Communications Manager, and Damon Querry, Research Information Systems Manager, on 6 June 2018 to discuss Wikipedia and Wikidata in terms of the university's research outputs and formulating guidance for how the university can better demonstrate its commitment to Open Science.
- Met with Vice Principal Lesley McAra and the Edinburgh Local team on 17 May 2018 to discuss the University’s institutional approach to public engagement with research in terms of how Wikipedia, Wiki Commons, Wikidata and Histropedia can help.
- Met with Academic Support Librarians Marshall Dozier, Ruth Jenkins and Donna Watson to support their preparations to run a How to run a Wikipedia editathon workshop at the EAHIL Conference in Cardiff on 13 July in order to encourage health infromation librarians attending the conference from around the world to run their own workshops at their own institutions to improve the health information available online around the world.

50 approx. | Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are widely used in business as a way of measuring success in achieving strategic objectives. The concept of Community KPIs adapts this idea into a component of a human centred and participatory design framework for the use of data and technology in cities. Community KPIs allow community members to co-design the metrics which should be used to inform and evaluate initiatives which deploy new technologies and data collection methods for social benefit. They also encourages citizens to gather data and evidence, interpret their findings, build awareness and achieve tangible outcomes. This workshop presented the Community KPIs concept and explored how to implement it, including determining what indicators might be relevant for communities at the local level and how these could fed into policy objectives of local and national government. |

Outcomes
[edit]- Met with Law undergraduate Jemima John and course leaders, Rachael Craufurd-Smith and Hector MacQueen, on 7 June 2018 to discuss how a Wikipedia in the Classroom assigment could be implemented in the School of Law curriculum for postgraduate students, undergraduate students or both.
- Wrote an article with law undergraduate, Jemima John, about how Wikipedia could be incorporated to enhance curriculum work at the School of Law. Blog article: How students are shaping the open web.
- Met with Vicki Madden to discuss a Mental Health Awareness Wikipedia editathon for Wellbeing Week in November 2018.
- Delivered two hour practical Wikidata workshop at the Digital Day of Ideas 2018. This result in 240 edits to Wikidata, adding place of residence data for accused witches from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database as a means of demonstrating a real world dataset being incorporated into Wikidata and the WDedit feature of the Listeria tool. New SPLOT workshop resource showcased.
- Mass imported all recorded occupations for the accused witches in the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database into Wikidata using the QuickStatements tool during the Wikidata Workshop at the Digital Day of Ideas. Bubble chart of occupations. As a result, we now know that if you were a) female b) middle class and c) a midwife, domestic worker or a vagrant in 16th/17th century Scotland your chances were not great. Tweet.
- Met with Susan Greig, Learning Technology Adviser at the University of Edinburgh, on 24 May 2018 to discuss running an Educational Technology (EdTech) Wikipedia editathon for colleagues with CMALTs in order to improve the educational technology information available online.

Projects/events in development
[edit]- Continuing to liaise with Hannah Evans at Wikimedia UK about the production of a new UK-based booklet of Wikipedia in the Classroom case studies.
- Drafting text on how Wikipedia and Wikidata can support the university's research outputs and help demonstrate the university's commitment to Open Science.
- Gavin Willshaw, digital curator at the University of Edinburgh, has planned in 2 Wikipedia training events to take place 11am to 4pm for Library and University Collections Staff over the Summer months.
- Another iteration of the Wikipedia assignment in the Reproductive Biology Hons. course has been confirmed to go ahead in September 2018.
- Wikipedia editing assignment for the Global Health MSc course - postponed until October 2018 due to Felix Stein working in Haiti at the moment.
- A collaboration with Michael Seery at the School of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry to be confirmed.
- Ada Lovelace Day 2018 is confirmed as going ahead at the School of Chemistry again in October 2018; working with Michael Seery and Jenni Garden. The focus this year may be on contemporary women in chemistry.
- Awaiting word from Sara Mortsell at Wikimedia Sweden about her plan to collaborate on a Wikipedia in Education knowledge sharing exercise between Wikimedia Sweden, Stockholm University, the University of Edinburgh and Tel Aviv University.
- Showcase 'Wiki Loves Libraries' event for SDLC and SLIC representatives still mooted - awaiting word from Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library) and liaising with Gavin Willshaw, Digital Curator on date and format.
- The import of thesis collection data to Wikidata from the Edinburgh Research Archive is to go ahead now Library Developer Mike Bennett's contract is continuing. Completed necessary preparatory work; just awaiting Mike finishing developing the tool that converts ALMA library catalogue data into a Wikidata-friendly import. Met with him briefly on 8 June 2018 to discuss this.
- Continuing to add more data to Wikidata from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database. More to be added at the Digital Day of Ideas event on 16 May 2018 for digital scholars working at the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
