Event description
[edit]The All Rise Editathon hosted by Black Lunch Table (BLT) and And, And, And at the Sloane Library at UNC Chapel Hill will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and issues of police brutality, immigration, and institutional racism in our communities. Together we will create historical documents that respond to the urgent need for a reconstruction of the historical record.
All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of the edit-a-thon. We will have a library resources and a list of suggested artists, cultural creators, and institutions on hand.
History of And, And, And
[edit]All Rise is a community-based performance series that addresses issues of police brutality, immigration, and institutional racism in our communities and ultimately aims to create a space for speech, performance, and critical dialogue. All Rise combines strategies from two ongoing collaborative projects, Jina Valentine’s The Black Lunch Table (with artist Heather Hart), and Hồng-Ân Trương’s And, And, And Stammering: An Interview (with artist Hương Ngô). All performances will be open to the public and sited outdoors on a temporary structure modeled after a courtroom, and at a set of moveable picnic tables.
The performance series will take place throughout March. Two performances will be led by Hồng-Ân Trương and Hương Ngô, with post-performance discussions led by The Black Lunch Table. And, And, And Stammering: An Interview is a project that uses the format of an interrogation to engage participants who have never had to naturalize into the United States to rehearse the process of becoming a citizen. For All Rise, Ngô and Trương will use material from the recent executive order temporarily banning immigrants and refugees from seven majority Muslim countries. Using interviews with those affected and language from the executive order itself to create an interrogation script, the participatory performance will allow audience members to become active spectators, encouraging us all to give up our own positions in order to understand and be in the place of another’s. Through this kind of engagement, And, And, And Stammering: An Interview seeks to problematize the notion of citizenship, national allegiance, and the structure of authority and power implicit in the state.
History of The Black Lunch Table
[edit]The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine (Fishantena (talk)) and Heather Hart (Heathart (talk)) which intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history. In its 10 year existence, the BLT has taken a variety of forms relating to this most recent iteration, in the form of the Wikipedia edit-a-thon. BLT’s aim is the production of discursive sites (at literal and metaphorical lunch tables), wherein cultural producers of color engage in critical dialogue on topics directly affecting our communities. They endeavor to create spaces, online and off, mirroring the activity and creativity present in sites where Blackness and Art are performed.
