Archives of deleted languages

[edit]

Hey I'm wondering whether there exist archives of languages deleted from wikipedia and of deleted language request incubators. KirkiArty (talk) 03:36, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@KirkiArty: See meta:List of Wikipedias#Other Wikipedias for closed Wikipedias. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:46, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I know, but I need their content. There is a list of wikipedia requests too, but again without contents. KirkiArty (talk) 09:50, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@KirkiArty: Some of them were picked up by Miraheze, see https://incubator.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:All_test_languages . TSventon (talk) 10:02, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bit too little :/ Thanks anyway KirkiArty (talk) 10:06, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We have the same name

[edit]

There are multiple artists along with other individuals with the same name “Matt Lambert” I have noticed that our information biography and such are getting mixed together. It happens quite often on platforms that we are mistaken for each other as we have parallel themes in some of our work. I noticed this happening particularly in the Spanish version.

suggestions on how to remedy this? 178.16.214.236 (talk) 09:39, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, IP editor who is presumably Matt Lambert.
On the English wikipedia, the best way to address this is to use the {{Edit COI}} template on the Article's talk page. You might use to say something like "Please remove XYZ because that refers to the Matt Lambert who is based in Madrid, not the one who is based in LA" and provide a link to a reliable source which makes it clear.
As all the different language run wikis are seperate, we can't advise on Spanish wiki - but I think their process would be pretty similar. -- D'n'B-t -- 10:04, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Don't build the Frankenstein is a humorous essay about this very real problem. Cullen328 (talk) 23:25, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Link to a specific part of a list in another article

[edit]

I want to create a link which takes the reader to a specific item on a list which is in subsection of another article. What is the correct syntax for the link at the origin and destination ends? Newwhist (talk) 13:39, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Newwhist, guidance for this process is split between Template:Anchor and WP:ANCHOR. Folly Mox (talk) 14:10, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Commission to write a page but....

[edit]

Hello I have been commissioned to create a page for a member of a legendary southern rock band. While I have written many times, I have never worked with Wikipedia. After completing this first page, it is very possible, likely even, that others in the industry will want me to create pages for them as well. Please let me now step what do I need to do to get started. Thank you, -Otto Otto Motev (talk) 16:37, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Read WP:PAID. You are required to make certain disclosures and follow certain rules when writing for pay. While not banned outright, the practice is looked down upon, and frequently produces articles which fail to meet Wikipedia's standards of neutrality and which therefore risk being rejected. Then read WP:FIRSTARTICLE to learn about the article creation process. AntiDionysius (talk) 16:40, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not for pay. When I say commissioned I should have specified that. Thank you very much for the insight and link! Otto Motev (talk) 17:59, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Otto Motev: Even if you're not being paid to write an article for someone you still have a conflict of interest, which you should still disclose. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:08, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not for pay? What do you mean by commissioned then? Please do specify your connection to the subject. --Onorem (talk) 19:46, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh really? What would the comflict be? I dont understand? How would i disclose it? 2600:1009:B05F:1E17:81F2:3BF:51C3:1DC5 (talk) 19:37, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Click on the link and read through the full guidelines. It explains both how to disclose a conflict of interest, and why it's important to do so. The short version is basically that in a case where you have a personal connection to something - it's your friend's company, you personally know the members of the band you're writing about etc - it will in many cases affect your ability to be neutral when writing about that subject, even when you are unaware of it and/or trying very hard to be neutral. Declaring the connection is therefore good for transparency purposes. AntiDionysius (talk) 19:49, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yes that makes sense for sure thank you Otto Motev (talk) 20:06, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was asked by fans initially. They know that I write. Since then a cohost of the podcast he is on has asked me to write this. Its amazing to me that this person is not already on here? But thats why the fans approached me. Otto Motev (talk) 20:08, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Otto Motev: Note also that we use "paid" to cover any compensation. This includes working on the article with your boss's permission on company time, and several other situations, not just straight fee for service. -Arch dude (talk) 18:34, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There will be no pay or compensation at all. I am independent and do not have a boss at all. The subject is currently involved in charity work. Otto Motev (talk) 20:09, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Too everyone taking the time to enlighten me on the nature if Wikipedia, thank you! Otto Motev (talk) 20:29, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Otto Motev You may need a solid piece of writing advice. I have no idea what your usual writing style is, nor whether you are adaptable. Wikipedia requires flat, neutral, dull-but-worthy prose, with references. Obviously we may not accept copyright wviolations. Assuming your rock legend is still living we have very specific needs for referencing:
For a living person we have a high standard of referencing. Every substantive fact you assert, especially one that is susceptible to potential challenge, requires a citation with a reference that is about them, and is independent of them, in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS, and is significant coverage. Please also see WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources and WP:SELFPUB which has clear limitations on self published sources. Providing sufficient references, ideally one per fact cited, that meet these tough criteria is likely to make this draft a clear acceptance (0.9 probability). Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that the person is not suitable for inclusion, certainly today.
I wish you success. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 20:34, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you!! Yes it sounds similar to writing training garb, process manuals and corporate stuff. All facts no conjecture. Sighting references is required, I believe I understand that correctly? Man, this is very good information I really appreciate you!! Thanks again!! Otto Motev (talk) 20:48, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but note that the vast bulk of your sources must be wholly independent of the subject - not written, published or commissioned by them or their associates or agents, or based on interviews with them or press releases. Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.
Note also that Wikipedia is not interested in what you personally know about the subject: every single piece of information you put in an article should have been published in a reliable source (and preferably, you should cite that source). ColinFine (talk) 22:57, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am concerned here with the OP's description of the band involved as legendary. That's not an objective starting position. I recommend the OP have a read of WP:NPOV. HiLo48 (talk) 23:52, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I will read everything you guys send me. Maybe after I read this, I will understand the "concern" of using the word legendary in this informal setting. Thank you. Otto Motev (talk) 12:09, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WP:PUFFERY may be of help. Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing and WP:OWN may also be of interest. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:20, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Privacy

[edit]

Hi there I edited an article because of a privacy issue. I am quite surprised my comment and the edit are both visible. Is there a way to change this please? 2.219.13.249 (talk) 16:38, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I added a header to your question. There are instructions at WP:OVERSIGHT for how to have the edit hidden. RudolfRed (talk) 16:42, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed his date of birth, as unreferenced. I've restored the statement that he's a film director, which you removed, as attested by references in the body of the article. (Almost all contributions to Wikipedia are visible to the world. This is, supposedly, made clear by the word "Publish" which you have to use when making a contribution.) Maproom (talk) 17:46, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maproom, I think the IP is more concenred about the edit to article about the street which gave the subject's exact address - the subject was only added to that article on 4th May - that seems reasonable for a RevDel I think? -- D'n'B-t -- 18:08, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted all the 4 May edits, which were unsourced, so that could be revdeled as well. TSventon (talk) 18:11, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And I've revdeled the relevant edits Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:55, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

self submission

[edit]

Is it appropriate to submit an article about myself Wickicgo (talk) 16:57, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Wickicgo: You should not. Read the advice at WP:AUTO RudolfRed (talk) 17:04, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page deletion

[edit]

Hello, I'm trying to find out why Marisol Lopez-Tromp page was deleted but I can't find any info. Please Help, thank you Quaketornado (talk) 19:33, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Quaketornado I can't see any sign that Marisol Lopez-Tromp ever existed in en Wikipedia. Generally if you click on a red link you see the deletion history, but there is none in this case. TSventon (talk) 19:48, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, a few articles have a red link to the non-existing page Marisol Lopez-Tromp but that does not imply that a page was deleted. See Wikipedia:Red link. Two other WIkipedia languages have articles about her: nl:Marisol Lopez-Tromp and pap:Marisol Lopez-Tromp. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:58, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Quaketornado. Based on a machine translation of the Dutch language article, it seems that she is a long time member and senior leader of of the Parliament of Aruba, which is called the Staten. Accordingly, it would be great if a Dutch speaking editor could translate that article into English. See WP:TRANSLATE to find out how to do that. Cullen328 (talk) 01:14, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Quaketornado, I have also gone in for a few of the articles and added interlanguage links to the nlwiki article (IMO, more complete than the one on papwiki) using the ill template. this will be *automatically* updated to link to an article about her on English language Wikipedia if such an article is created. At minimum her standing as a member of a country's National Parliament would pass the Notability test. Naraht (talk) 13:29, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Concern about an editor's behavior

[edit]

I have concerns about an editor acting, in my view, out of compliance with the Wikimedia Foundation Universal Code of Conduct. To whom should I address the specifics of the issue? I have been taught to praise in public and criticize in private, so my thoughts are that I should not just post this to an admin on a talk page. Please advise. Thank you for your help. Doc54625 (talk) 19:33, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The UCoC is not really something we enforce locally, because we already have local policies that are, in almost all cases, stricter than the UCoC. If your concern has a priovacy component you should report it to WP:ARBCOM by email, but if it does not you should in fact post at the relvant admin noticeboard such as WP:ANI. Release History on MATLAB page

[edit]

On May 31st, 2024, MrOllie removed the "Release history" section on MATLAB under WP:NOTCHANGELOG. However, this list seems synthesized from multiple sources and more granular than what MATLAB provides on its own website without discussing bugs being squashed or intermediate snapshots. Similarly, ZFS has a section, and Adobe Acrobat has a dedicated version history page. Would it be best to revert the deletion, to make a reduced/redacted form to make it less of a changelog, or to split the version/release/number correlation chart into a separate page similar to the various Windows 10 updates? UpbeatDiamond (talk) 23:42, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

While the WP:BRD process allows you to revert, doing so would almost certainly be followed by a discussion on the article's talk page. Since that is going to happen anyway, and also since you are proposing different possible answers, starting a discussion on the talk page is clearly the best approach. Make sure you notify MrOllie. Question

[edit]

I've reverted some vandalism and warned a user for that, but i noticed there was some more vandalism before that. What do i do? DANGA14talk 23:54, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Which article are you talking about, DANGA14? -- Hoary (talk) 00:21, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"I've reverted some vandalism" refers to Byju's.
"there was some more vandalism" refers to Mayank Agarwal. DANGA14talk 00:34, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, DANGA14. Revert vandalism whenever you see it. Warnings should be for recent vandalism. Warning someone who has not edited for months is unlikely to be of any value. Cullen328 (talk) 00:59, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
