[edit]deleted page
[edit]I am new to Wikipedia. I started drafting a page on Sandbox and it has now been deleted because I have apparently contravened copywrite. I had put close to twenty hours in and would like to have the page restored so I can improve it and remove anything including rewriting or removing anything that is copywrite. Is it possible to have a deleted page restored?~~~~ Vistadelsol (talk) 00:40, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Vistadelsol A copyright violation will not be restored. 331dot (talk) 00:45, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- @vistadelsol: not in this case. due to united states law, we cannot host any copyrighted materials. start from a blank draft and make sure to not copy text from other sources. lettherebedarklight晚安 00:46, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- vistadelsol, do you consider yourself authorized to reproduce the content of the website laurelmckenzie.au? If so, please briefly explain how you are authorized. -- Hoary (talk) 02:14, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi, I would like to know why my draft can't be submitted.
[edit]My draft couldn't be submitted and I don't know why. CARLITOAHUISA (talk) 02:15, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- CARLITOAHUISA, do you mean Draft:Winner Airways? If so, did you click on the blue "Resubmit" button? If you did, then what happened? -- Hoary (talk) 04:18, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- It worked now, I think I didn't fill in one of the blanks. CARLITOAHUISA (talk) 04:33, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, CARLITOAHUISA. You need to provide some references to reliable, independent sources that devote significant coverage to the airline. Passing mentions are of no value in establishing notability. The references need not be in English. Chinese would be fine. Cullen328 (talk) 07:25, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Links
[edit]1) Is it better to link the search term with a red link to an article that doesn't exist or to link with a blue link to an article that explains some or the basics of the linked word? Red linking would seem to be clearly weaker for readers.
2) Do red links still lower the quality of the article? Namely, in one vote for a good article, half considered the red links to be a weakness. 2001:2003:F643:6A00:65DD:5020:12A4:9132 (talk) 08:42, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Your questions look very reasonable but I don't think that they have very simple answers. Meanwhile: Question 1: you don't mention a third option: not linking anywhere. If you consider this, you have three options. Which of the three I'd take would depend on the particular situation. Question 2: not straightforwardly, no. However, there's no point redlinking to imaginable topics that are unlikely to have viable articles any time soon. I'd not heard of voting for "Good Articles" (or for [lowercase] good articles); which vote was this? -- Hoary (talk) 08:50, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- 1a) You are right. There is also option 4: don't write about the topic at all. 1b) You are right. Specific situation: list of features with 8 names, 7 of which are blue and 1 red. 2) That article had no links to fictional objects, it was a high level science article. 3) This was an article in my country, where Wikipedia guidelines prohibit linking to articles in English Wikipedia. 2001:2003:F643:6A00:615E:C764:4827:ABFB (talk) 09:28, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Sometimes, Template:Interlanguage link can be a good option. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:50, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- My country's Wikipedia rules say: "Do not link to other language versions of Wikipedia in the text of the article. If there is no -language name- article on the subject of the link, do not link to other language versions." 2001:2003:F643:6A00:615E:C764:4827:ABFB (talk) 10:10, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Rules and practice in, for example, Swedish-language Wikipedia don't determine what should or shouldn't be done in English-language Wikipedia. Those in English-language Wikipedia don't determine what should or shouldn't be done in, for example, Swedish-language Wikipedia. If you're asking about editing in English-language Wikipedia, then please specify which draft(s) or article(s) is/are currently of direct concern. If on the other hand you're asking about editing in the Wikipedia of some other language, then this is the wrong place. -- Hoary (talk) 11:27, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- As you said, it was a sensible (also important and easy) question for the English-speaking world as well. I waited patiently your answer about 3 hours. 2001:2003:F643:6A00:74B4:42AF:4E1C:A247 (talk) 12:39, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- In my country, there are no rules on my important first question. I thought I could get better knowledge here than that the strongest wins in the jungle. 2001:2003:F643:6A00:74B4:42AF:4E1C:A247 (talk) 12:49, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

- Minor point: Wikipedias are not country based but language based. Saying "My country's Wikipedia" is meaningless, what you mean is "My language's Wikipedia". Martin of Sheffield (talk) 14:51, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, you are right. I have already given you a specific case in sufficient detail. You're appealing to general reasons. I'll give you one: 'articles are written for readers'. You ignored that too. I'm sorry for your lack of response. Do you have a better reason when you refuse to answer and give way to arbitrariness (and minor points), for example by invoking nationality? 2001:2003:F643:6A00:EC09:7040:1298:CD36 (talk) 15:27, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Donations
[edit]Hi, after making a donation to Wikipedia (I have never made a donation to Wikipedia, but may do so in the future), the donation in question is used for what, precisely? If it is possible to know. JackkBrown (talk) 12:23, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- @JackkBrown Donations go to the Wikimedia Foundation. Among other things, they pay for the servers and running costs of Wikipedia in its many language forms. Note that those who write the articles don't get paid for doing so. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:44, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Message about editing
[edit]I got a message that my editing of “closed list” was reverted yet I don’t remember editing any articles of “closed list” 37.72.113.250 (talk) 12:37, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Accidentally linked the wrong article
[edit]Hi, I'm a new user of Wikipedia. While I'm enthusiastic, I made a mistake of accidentally linking a page to a disambiguation page when translating. When I tried to revert it by copying back the original content of the disambiguation page, which is short, it couldn't save my revert because it thought I was emptying the page.
Can anyone help with this? I would really appreciate it! Yn1203 (talk) 15:30, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Yn1203. Your contribution history on English Wikipedia shows no edits in article space, so I think you must be talking about something you added to the Indonesian pages. However, editing there should be as here, so you should be able to go to the History tab of the page in question and "undo" the bad edit. Then you can re-add the material with the full correct link. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:37, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Michael,
- Thanks for your kind reply.
- So here's the case because I tried following your assistance yet I'm still confused:
- This is a page of the disambiguation page of Mary Morrissey in EN:
- Instead of adding the translation of the disambiguation page of Mary Morrissey in Indonesian, which was what I intended to do, I added the Indonesian translation of this page: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey
- Now, when I tried to revert/edit so that I could de-attach/remove the wrong, full Indonesian Mary Morrissey (American author) page from the disambiguation page, I was held by Wikipedia's bot that said I couldn't do it, because the disambiguation page's translation is much shorter, therefore the bot thinks I'm purposefully ruining the longer translation (which is about Mary Morrissey, American author, that was wrongly linked to the EN disambiguation pge instead of EN Mary Morrisey's American author page).
- Hopefully this is clear. Yn1203 (talk) 15:45, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, so looking at your global contributions, I think you're probably talking about this edit and this edit to Wikidata. Am I correct? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:58, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi! Thanks for taking a look.
- I did edit those two Wikidatas, however, the issue is that Mary Morrissey's disambiguation page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey has the wrong ID translation.
- Instead of having the disambiguation page in Indonesian, it has the Indonesian translation of this page: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Morrissey.
- How can I remove/revert/unroll/undo the edit so the EN disambiguation page would have the correct ID translation? Yn1203 (talk) 16:47, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Can you link here to the correct ID page? ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:56, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks ONUnicorn! But I think I got it. If you have a bit of time to spare, would you quickly check this page of Mary Morrissey in Simple English:
- And let me know if you can change it into Indonesian and see an Indonesian content?
- I think after browsing for a while, I finally got what I wanted! Please let me know if you wouldn't mind. Appreciate it :) Yn1203 (talk) 17:02, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- It looks like you got it fixed! Yay! ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:12, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Yay! Thanks, Unicorn! You rock! I owe ya one! Yn1203 (talk) 17:23, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- @Yn1203 Yes, the simple English page is linked to Wikidata item Q112570588 and hence to many other-language articles including Indonesian. I think that your confusion was that there is a separate wikidata item (Q16876505) for the disambiguation page itself. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:13, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Mike! Thanks to you as well! You da man! Yn1203 (talk) 17:23, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

Getting my page out of sandbox?
[edit]I have my page setup in sandbox and would like it to be published, how do I achieve this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Janeksnowski/sandbox Janeksnowski (talk) 16:40, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
- Janeksnowski To be frank- you don't, because it's completely unsuitable as an article and I have deleted it as blatant advertising amd possibly a copyright violation. Please read WP:COI and WP:PAID. If you are interested in writing an encyclopedia article that summarizes independent reliable sources, please read Your First Article and use Articles for creation to create and submit a draft. 331dot (talk) 16:48, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
