[edit]Search user contributions by content?
[edit]Is it possible to search user contributions by content? For example, I'd to find my edits containing the word "merge", where I have inserted template:merge. Thanks! fgnievinski (talk) 02:18, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski: I used AutoWikiBrowser's List Comparer to compare your last 25,000 edits with all the articles that contain Template:Merge, and found these 8 articles:
- Hope this is what you were looking for! GoingBatty (talk) 03:05, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty: thank you for your help! Should I hold any hopes for finding articles in which I had inserted the merge template but no longer have it in its current version? For example: Nutation, Magnetosphere, List of common misconceptions. fgnievinski (talk) 03:44, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski: I can't think of a way to search that way, but maybe someone else will. GoingBatty (talk) 03:52, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Fgnievinski: it is possible, though you have to do some work. Basically, when you have the list above, you have to fire an API query similar to this one, replacing the title. The software will then return you the latest revision of that page. After that, you can extract the revision text using a JSON parser and check for the presence of a merge template. How to frame an article about a policeman who attacked a woman and was given what is being seen as a very light sentence
[edit]Hi
Recently in the UK a policeman attacked a woman and was given what is being seen as a very light sentence. There are many many reference sources about it in national newspapers. My question is what is the best way to frame the topic, should it be:
- An article about the court case (I'm not able to find the name of the case currently)
- An article about the attack its self
- Something else? My assumption is it is incorrect to create articles about the people as biographies.
Thanks
John Cummings (talk) 09:56, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Try [1].
- Personally, I feel it is more notorious than notable. Any continuing general notability is for the change in sentencing, as that may be relevant to future cases.
- --Verbarson (talk) 10:54, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Verbarson:
- I'm sorry, I don't understand what the link is or which framing you're suggesting. Are you saying it would be best framed about the court case?
- Thanks
- John Cummings (talk) 11:07, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Are you saying that this murder, which happened about three miles from where I'm sitting, is notable enough to merit an article in a global, general encyclopedia? Britmax (talk) 11:14, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- I think that's what he's trying to say. SenatorLEVI 11:24, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- I don't think this is notable enough to sustain a full article, it doesn't seem large or relevant enough; I can't think of any suitable titles since the incident itself is too specific and localized, however I would go with Outrage Over Unjust Verdict (Insert Area Name), but that sounds like a news article. SenatorLEVI 11:24, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Better link: [2]
- If it is WP-worthy it is either for the sentencing, or the fact the criminal was a policeman.
- --Verbarson (talk) 11:27, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks all
- I know what the notability rules are for Wikipedia, if it is about the court case (which I think makes most sense) is anyone able to find a link to the court documents so I can call it the correct name?
- John Cummings (talk) 11:34, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I think you are trying to create an article for an fractionally above average murder. We would be wandering into newspaper territory. Britmax (talk) 11:45, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- For the record, the OP was asking about a case that was an assault, not a murder, and the assailant (Oliver Banfield) who happened to be a policeman was given a 14-week curfew plus a fine. Wikipedia hardly needs articles about such cases or it would be inundated. The links provided by Verbarson are to a different case. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:53, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Mike Turnbull is quite right. I had either misread the link (or more likely jumped to the wrong case based on recent news). My apologies to John Cummings and all for muddying the water.--Verbarson (talk) 13:39, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks all, I think maybe I am not being clear, I am not asking about notability, I'm asking about framing and structure, maybe I can ask in a different way.... Can people suggest good examples of Wikipedia articles about crimes against people which are not murders? The one that sticks out to me as potentially similar is People v. Turner, but I assume there are many others, cases in the UK would be super helpful.
Thanks again
John Cummings (talk) 15:47, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- You could use the category pages, John Cummings. There is "Category:Trials in the United Kingdom". for example, although it has far fewer entries than Category:Trials in the United States. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:10, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks @Michael D. Turnbull:, this is really helpful, especially Category:English_criminal_case_law. John Cummings (talk) 17:16, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
Files
[edit]I just uploaded File:Cute_chicken.jpeg. MifterBot sent me a message saying the file was inadequate. Can someone please help me with this? 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 11:48, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Chicdat: Hello, and welcome to the Help Desk. MifterBot probbably explained it in his message already, but on Wikipedia all files need to carry information on their copyryright status (Copyright holder, creation date, permission (if appropiate) etc.) and the license they are under ({{Cc-by-sa-2.5}} etc) or how they meet the Fair Use criteria. I see you have already added a license. Based on that, I assume you are the copyright holder. I have added our standard information template (
{{information}}
) to the image description page. You should fill in the fields there sooner or later. For future uploads, I recommend that you use The File Upload Wizard, which can take care of filling in the provided templates for you. Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:01, 20 March 2021 (UTC)- A small point but important. When you use the upload wizard, as already recommended, you are asked to provide the date for the image. You should use the date it was taken, not the date you uploaded it. So, for your chicken, the exif data from the camera says it was taken on 2 January 2021 while the date in the "Description" box says 20 March, which is the date you uploaded it. These details can matter for those who wish to use the image and may not notice the discrepancy. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:13, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
Can you check the page Haider Alnuaimi and reevaluation it?
[edit]Hello hope you have a good day when I published the article it didn't have a lot of sources so the admin evaluation as Start-Class and Low-importance but now I add more sources and it will show why he is influenced in Iraq. so can you reevaluate this article Haider Alnuaimi? thank you --Pro95mustafa (talk) 12:17, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Since this is English Wikipedia and all but one of the sources are in Arabic, it is difficult to evaluate them. Many, many articles in Wikipedia are rated start class and of low importance to whatever Project is interested in them, so if I were you I wouldn't worry about trying to get the article upgraded: few people will care about its rating. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:57, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Michael D. Turnbull and thank you for your response and I just have GAD so I want to make everything perfect, it's true all reference in Arabic cause of the weakness of the media in the Arab countries, and they do not publish in English =( --Pro95mustafa (talk) 13:58, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Pro95mustafa: Those ratings are done wit respect to specific wikipedia "projects". If you want a project to re-evaluate the page, go to the project's talk page and open a discussion there. Tell then what you think the class an importance should be, and why. Make your points with reference to the project's definition of importance. -Arch dude (talk) 15:08, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Pro95mustafa: For articles like this moving up the quality scale, it would really help the reader if you included some translated quotes from the sources. The citation templates allow for |trans-quote= and |quote-page=. See, for example, Template:Cite news for the possibilities. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:23, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Pro95mustafa:, if you want to improve the article you could look at other Iraqi journalist articles. Atwar Bahjat and Hisham al-Hashimi were the first two I found. The lead should summarise the main part of the article so I would suggest moving his education and early jobs to an "Early life" section. TSventon (talk) 16:54, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Use of block quotes for song lyrics
[edit]I know the MOS says it, but just to be absolutely clear on this, writers and editors on this website are supposed to use the "poem" block quote format when quoting song lyrics, right?--Thylacine24 (talk) 13:45, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Thylacine24: The MOS you mentioned states the guideline is for a long quote, and also gives the option to quote the material inline. GoingBatty (talk) 20:02, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty: Could you please tell me if you mean "yes" or "no"? I used the "poem" block quote in one of my last edits.--Thylacine24 (talk) 02:58, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Thylacine24: Yes, if it's more than one line. Special:Diff/1013175144 looks fine. Go with the MOS unless there is a strong reason not to. I think <poem> is much more readable in source code than a bunch of <br />. Pelagic ( messages ) – (15:56 Sun 21, AEDT) 04:56, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Pelagic: Thanks. Sorry not to link to that particular edit myself.--Thylacine24 (talk) 13:14, 21 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Thylacine24: I meant "no", because the MOS provides more options than just saying editors are supposed to use the "poem" block quote format. GoingBatty (talk) 01:46, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty: Thanks, but could you please tell me if there's nothing wrong with using the "poem" format for song quotations?--Thylacine24 (talk) 02:39, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Thylacine24: Yes, the MOS says you may use the "poem" format for song quotations. GoingBatty (talk) 05:05, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @GoingBatty: Okay, thanks.--Thylacine24 (talk) 17:05, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Stuart Lubbock
[edit]I tried to move the article, Stuart Lubbock inquest to Death of Stuart Lubbock and got into a mess. I've now created the article, 'Death of Stuart Lubbock' and put the material I wanted there. The 'Stuart Lubbock inquest' article is still a mess, please put it right. Proxima Centauri (talk) 13:55, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Proxima Centauri: I have made a history merge and redirected Stuart Lubbock inquest to Death of Stuart Lubbock. Do not make cut and paste moves. Your first move accidentally selected "Template talk" in the namespace field below "New title:" on the move form. You should have fixed it by making a new move from there to Article space. Can you unthank an edit?
[edit]Hello, I accidentally thanked a vandalism edit when I didn’t mean to. Is there a way to “unthank” the edit? Also be aware I am in the mobile Safari version. Ididntknowausername (talk) 16:08, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- No, I don't think so. Maybe the vandal will think of it as sarcasm, given that I assume you reverted it and gave a warning! Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:12, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- He may well do so. But I would not like to encourage the use of sarcastic thanks, there's enough misunderstandings around already. Maproom (talk) 22:41, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- AFAIK there is no way to unthank as the thanks has already been sent. BTW Ididntknowausername if it was an IP my understanding (though I could be wrong) is that they do not receive pings whether they be thanks or mentions in talk page threads. MarnetteD|Talk 23:05, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
- IP addresses can't be thanked anyway. Matt Deres (talk) 18:56, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Obscene photo in Spring entry
