[edit]Today's featured picture
[edit]https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg
Hi, it would be nice to have one or more resolutions intermediate between 755 × 1,024 pixels and 10,485 × 14,223 pixels, the latter being nearly 200 times the size of the former and hardly feasible to download or view. Also, a note on the above page says "The original file has a large number of pixels and when opened at full resolution, may either not load properly or cause your browser to freeze. These problems can be avoided by use of the ZoomViewer." However, when I try to use the "ZoomViewer" I get an error "No response from server iipsrv.fcgi". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C8:7B08:6A00:D9C5:AB0:19EC:73D5 (talk) 02:00, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- I've asked at c:Commons:Help desk#Down-scaling a giant image. I was able to get a 1,510 × 2,048 px image generated, though it's not in the list of resolutions shown, but can be accessed at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e2/Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg/1510px-Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg or put in an article here with

. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:30, 1 November 2020 (UTC)- Update: Commons help replied "We don't add to the automatically generated lists of other resolutions" and to report the errors on the higher resolutions as a potential bug. I'll note that this morning, I was able to get it to generate a 2,097 × 2,845 pic at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e2/Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg/2097px-Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg, but trying to render it here (at enwiki) with

still doesn't work (though this may be related to the fact that I'm getting a 429 error (too many requests) on Commons now while playing with it instead of the 500 error I got earlier at the same resolution (3495px). I'll update here with the phab ticket when I get to reporting it. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 18:06, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

List of animals who kill the most humans each year wikipage
[edit]Someone put that the numbers exclude other causes of death, such as “abortions.” This is topic that becomes convoluted and messy. When does a fertilized egg become considered a living human, which can then be considered a life capable of killing. You see how messy it gets? Just remove that part. It’s unnecessary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.85.222.120 (talk) 03:48, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- I've replaced the ridiculously convoluted text with something much more succinct in List of deadliest animals to humans. Clarityfiend (talk) 06:47, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- P.S. This is the wrong place to raise a content issue. Clarityfiend (talk) 06:50, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
Editing the size of an image in an infobox
[edit]I am trying to add an image to the infobox on the Wikipedia Stub "Koori" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koori). Every time I add an image, it comes out huge, and I can't figure out how to edit its size.
Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bella2129 (talk • contribs) 06:52, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- You add "|##px" to the link, where ## is the number of pixels wide you want the image to be. The link should read something like . —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 07:12, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Using
|image=image_file
lets the infobox use the default size which usually is fine. I have moved the image at Koori into the infobox this way. MB 07:24, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Restart Process
[edit]Several years ago I deleted (or tried to delete) my "WP membership" then later attempted to resume the same. "Restart Process" was displayed (it' been a while now, it's still there) - I've no recollection of anything beyond what is now displayed). I never succeeded in restarting the same id. Any suggestions? Thanks 67.160.197.209 (talk) 07:38, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @67.160.197.209: I yust want to make sure I understand you correctly:
- You dont remember your username you used
- you dont remember the email adress you used, or it has subsequentely changed or
- you havent set an email adress at that time
- If you can answer two of the three questions with "yes", I am afraid that you can only create a new account and use that onwards.
- If you remember your username, you can try to reset your password. This will fail if you didn't set an email adress at that time. You can then log in with your username and the password from the email using the login link at the top of every Wikipedia page.
- If you remeber the email adress you used, you can reset your password which will not only send you a new password, but also a remindeer of your username. You can then login using the username from the email and the new password. This method fails if you dont remembered correctly.
- If you know that you don't have the email adress anylonger but are able to recover it, you can recover it and follow the bullet point above. :If any unexpected errors arise durring the process, you can ask here. Victor Schmidt (talk) 08:41, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @67.160.197.209: If you don't remember your username, but you remember the name of a page you edited with that account, you might find your username by searching in the edit history of the page--It would help if you remember about when you edited it. —teb728 t c 11:48, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Hyperlinking in infoboxes
[edit]How do I link to other Wikipedia articles within an infobox?
Thank you! --Bella2129 (talk) 08:29, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Main page talk page semi-protection
[edit]I know the main page itself has been protected since essentially forever. However, the talk page for the main page, including errors to DYK etc, was open to all edits until fairly recently. How can I find out when and why it was placed under semi-protection? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.11.165.101 (talk) 13:16, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- It was protected on October 1 due to extensive vandalism. It's only protected from IP users and non-autoconfirmed users; you are welcome to create an account which will allow you to post there(once autoconfirmed). 331dot (talk) 13:28, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
Changing the display title
[edit]Hello, Please change the display tile from: User:Ziv Aviram to Ziv Aviram
Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ziv Aviram (talk • contribs) 14:54, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- User:Ziv Aviram is your user page. It is intended for you to write about yourself regarding what you are doing to help improve Wikipedia. Instead, you have used it for a promotional and unreferenced autobiography, which is certainly not acceptable as a Wikipedia article. Maproom (talk) 15:05, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ziv Aviram: See WP:USERPAGE. As Maproom said, it should be used to tell other editors about how you can help improve Wikipedia. By contrast, an article about you would tell the world about yourself as a notable person.
You are notUnless you are notable by our definition (WP:N),soan article cannot be added. If youbecomeare notable then someone (not you, see WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY) will eventually add it, written in an objective manner and in an encyclopedic tone, with references to reliable sources. -Arch dude (talk) 15:18, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ziv Aviram: You added a picture to commons, claiming it as your own work, but you then credited it on your user page to someone else. the copyright of that picture belonge to the photographer, not you, so you cannot claim it as your own work. I will nominate it fro deletion. Please ask the photographer to upload it, or provide evidence that you own the copyright if you re-add it. We treat intellectual property issues very seriously. I assume that a person with your background is very well informed about intellectual property issues. -Arch dude (talk) 16:32, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Ziv Aviram: Even if you had moved your user page to article space, it would have been speedily deleted for being promotional and for copying copyrighted content from other sources. Although the promotional language was appropriate at the source websites, it has no place in an encyclopedia like Wikipedia. —teb728 t c 05:00, 2 November 2020 (UTC)
Magnum PI (reboot 2018)
[edit]On Hawaii Five-O reboot (2010) and MacGyver reboot (2016) on the far right side of the page scroll down and you see season 1, if you click for Season 2 you can see a new screen with just that season info there. Same is the case for MacGyver. However for Magnum PI after season one ended and season 2 started you continued season 2 on the same page grouping everything together. So cast names have increased because 2 seasons as does the references at the end. I generally print out each season and keep for my files but I am unable to do this for this show. Is it possible you can reformat this show so that it appears like the other two? I tried cutting and pasting the info for the season I wanted but that did not work. Please accommodate me by making this simple change. I would appreciate your reply. Thank you and BE SAFE. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:B8C1:F400:BD86:F53E:CD31:BA92 (talk) 19:27, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Question on piping
[edit]I have asked before at the Help Desk about a technique called piping, and have done experiments on my sandbox to see whether this would get me to the article on Martin Luther. I would like to know whether it is possible to use a similar technique to go to specific sections of the article on Martin Luther - for example, Section 8, the section on Luther's translation of the Bible. Many thanks in advance for your help. Vorbee (talk) 19:45, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Vorbee: ML Bible produces ML Bible and should do what you want. RudolfRed (talk) 19:56, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thank yoi User: RudolfRed. I see you see that in what you typed you put the symbol to make music notes sharp. I do no appear to have this on my computer keyboard - the computer I am using is a Dell laptop. Is there another computer icon that I could type to serve the same function? Many thanks, Vorbee (talk) 21:33, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- If you are on Windows, you can use the Character map program to insert the #. I'd guess that other OS have something similar. RudolfRed (talk) 21:52, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Vorbee: Please note that the character is a Number sign, not a musical sharp or any of the other similar-shaped symbols, so when you pick it from a symbol list, make sure your get the correct one. You might wish to just copy the symbol from this help desk post and paste is onto your user page for future use. It is also available in the "special characters" tab of the Wikipedia text editor window. -Arch dude (talk) 22:58, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Hi, Vorbee. Does your keyboard not match any of the illustrations in the article QWERTY? Most of them have a # symbol somewhere - most often shift-3, but sometimes elsewhere. Alternatively, you can simply copy and paste the # character from here, or from any other article where it occurs, such as Number sign. --ColinFine (talk) 22:53, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Vorbee: Does this mean you're not using the standard US keyboard layout? If ⇧ Shift+3 doesn't produce
#
, you can always insert it as a symbol (CharInsert should have it). If you're using the visual editor (or new wikitext mode), you can also find it by clicking on Ω in the editor's toolbar and navigating to the "Symbols" section (first row). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • [[Special:Contributions/Tenryuu|
- Thank you for your kind and helpful comments. I have found where the sharp sign is on my keyboard - it is just below the tilde (~) sign.

Can I make my own articles and how
[edit]Its self explanatory — Preceding unsigned comment added by Samyan musa (talk • contribs) 19:50, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Please, see Wikipedia:My first article. Ruslik_Zero 20:09, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Samyan musa: Can you? Yes. Should you? Probably not. As a newbie, creating an article from scratch can be quite difficult, technically. That aside, and more importantly, there are criteria (primarily our definition of notability) for an article to exist are somewhat strict, requiring significant coverage of the topic in independent, reliable sources. What did you want to write about? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 20:54, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- In principle, you can create Wikipedia articles. In practice, as a new user, you are likely to find it very difficult and frustrating. And they will be Wikipedia's article, not "your own". Maproom (talk) 23:03, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
- Type in the article's name in the box that says "Search Wikipedia". If there is not an article with that name in Wikipedia, it will come up in red letters. You can press on the red letters to start the article. I hope that helps. Vorbee (talk) 17:00, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Samyan musa: No, it is not 'self-explanatory' unless you explain in details what you mean by "my own articles".
Some possible meanings are 'articles about me, my family and my friends' or 'articles which only I can expand and update'.
The answer for the former case is 'yes, you can, but you're strongly adviced not to do that' – more at WP:Autobiography and WP:Conflict of interest, also WP:Neutral point of view.
The answer for the latter one is 'no, you can't, because of Wikipedia:Ownership of content policy'.
For other possible answers you need to express your expectations precisely. --CiaPan (talk) 17:17, 3 November 2020 (UTC)
