Twinkle

I had a question about using Twinkle and using this tool to request the option I should have in my settings. Thanks. Tell me the full name of the tick removal option.Because I am editing with the tablet, I did not find the option. Thank you. @AppoWeb: Would you rephrase your question please? I can't find a relevant mention of the word "tick" anywhere under WP:TWINKLE and it's sub-pages. Template:listen

When I do this:

Why does the bottom get cut off when I click on menu? Tested on Firefox, Chrome. IE and Edge.

Here is it with some text wrapped around it: same problem.

@Guy Macon: I have no idea why, but the only difference between your code and the examples at {{Listen}} is that you use the "pos=left" parameter. I replaced it with "style=float:left", and it works:

@Arch dude and Guy Macon: The diff between them is the "bad" one has class .mbox-small-left while the "good" one has class .mbox-small. There are several diffs between them, but the one that matters is that .mbox-small-left sets overflow:hidden, which causes the unwanted behavior (confirmed by disabling it in the console). Saint Urho

I need to find a Finnish speaking editor to translate the first line of the Ode to Saint Urho at the Saint Urho article. Any ideas? Gandydancer (talk) 04:38, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

In the Saint Urho article, click on the interlanguage link for its Finnish version, and ask (in English) for help on the talk page there. The chance of a Finnish editor speaking English is quite high. Maproom (talk) 06:56, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

You could also look at this category of users who say they speak Finnish at a native-level, try and find a user who has been recently active, and ask them for help. Seagull123 Φ 09:14, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

I had a look at that ode, and the Finnish language words there are so badly mangled they're barely recognisable. The ode is going to be rather difficult to translate even for native Finnish speakers. JIP | Talk 12:15, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

It's not Finnish - it's cod English, apart from the first few words, which appear to be a mangling of "yksi kaksi kolme (neljä) vii(si)" ("one two three (four) five"). --ColinFine (talk) 15:35, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

You got it! and thanks a lot. I'm from Minnesota and there are a lot of Finns that came from "the old country" to work in the iron mines in northern Minnesota. My Slovenian grandparents were from that generation so my friends and I were third generation. First generation Finns were looked down on by the Slovenians and even the Swedes but by the time my generation was growing up it had become sort of cool to be Finnish. So I did not actually hear the language spoken much, but I still knew how it sounded and how the accent sounded from Finnish jokes and old Finnish tales when told at events and such. As for the counting, I guessed that that is what those words meant because I'd heard them from Finnish classmates and all these years later it sort of rang a bell. Except for the first line I had no trouble at all in understanding all the words--and actually the authors did a darn good job of making it sound exactly as one would hear a person with a heavy Finnish accent speak them. I know what feelia and kala moyakka are. The soup is good but I'm not up to eating the fish eyes and the feelia is the most awful stuff imaginable. Perhaps I should translate the poem at the Saint Urho article since I thought it was easy enough, but apparently not. Thanks to all that have answered. Gandydancer (talk) 04:19, 30 August 2020 (UTC)

Intersection Observer alternative

Hi!

Wikipedia recently changed the way lazy loading is implemented. It now makes use of the Intersection Observer API.

Many devices (for example all iOS devices below 12.2) do not support this API, which renders wikipedia almost unusable to read certain types of articles, particularly math related, since the fallback solution has the user tap a tiny tiny grey box for every image in the article. When it comes to math a single character in a sentence might be an image.

This is quite sad, since it changes wikipedia from the fastest and most reliable source of information, to a website you only visit if you don’t have any other options.

Is there any way to make wikipedia usable again on older devices? Maybe a way to disable lazy loading altogether, or make wikipedia use the old algorithm which actually worked? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.129.217.229 (talk • contribs) 2020-08-29T10:29:38 (UTC)

Using Other People's Flickr Images

I'm editing Draft:Jatbula_Trail and it seems like I can use this image from flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/theholygrail/19631300499/ It's not my image but it has CC BY 2.0 licensing. Properly-licensed Flickr images can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, so that they can be used across all projects. The upload wizard has a provision for that, I believe. --Orange Mike | Talk 11:07, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

BLP referencing question

Quick BLP question - athlete has failed a doping control, and that statement is reference, but the reference is dead. What's the right template to stick next to it? Awb replace moving one line forward

I'm a AWB bot user but I'm not so skilled. I need to insert in some pages a text in the last line before the categories line so I though to replace the string "category:xxxx with: the "text", the breaking line code and the string "category:xxxx" again. @Pierpao: I'm not sure if I understand but if you want to insert "foo" above "[[Category A]]", you replace (using regexes) "\[\[\s*Category A\s*\]\]" with "foo\n\[\[Category A\]\]" (without the quotes). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 11:43, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Gallery of Videos

Is it possible to create a GALLERY that includes several videos stored on Wikimedia commons? I know the <gallery> tag can be used for photos, but is there something for video files too? Thanks.

@Liliana joy: Not in the same way as you would from 'Jango' or other music streaming sites but some articles about songs do contain a brief clip of the music. Historical populations template formatting

On the Dushanbe article which I have been working on recently I've had an issue with the historical populations template for the population section. I can see from the template page that you can put general references at the bottom, but is there a way to put the references right next to the year as there would be with the table? (this is because the population data comes from many different sources and it would be helpful to specify next to the year which sources refers to which year) I've kept the redundant table just to keep the references referring to a specific year. Which is the better document to cite?

A reference has recently been added to an article (Cadaver Synod) which I monitor, and I'd like to format it using the appropriate citation template. However, I'm not sure which source to use. The reference article was originally published in a popular magazine, and is stored in the University of Georgia's "Digital Commons" archive. There are three possibilities:

1. The article formatted as a PDF [1]. This (bare URL) is the current reference in our article.
2. A link to the university archive page [2]. This is the URL given in the formatted article as a recommended citation. It does not, however, give the text of the article.
3. The original magazine article [3]. This is linked from the archive page, but is less easy to read than the reformatted article and contains irrelevant material.

Hi, Tevildo. In my view, the important part of citation is the bibliographic information: title, author, date, where published. A URL is a convenience for the reader, not an integral part of the citation (except in the case of source which exists only as a website). It makes sense then to link to the most readily readable copy - provided that that copy is not itself a copyright violation, and preferably is hosted somewhere reliable. --ColinFine (talk) 19:11, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

@Tevildo: (Note that 1 and 3 are the same document.) Since the PDF is not necessarily "easiest to read" on all platforms, I like to include the link to the HTML page with the abstract as well as the PDF, which also sometimes provides a level of redundancy. I'd go with:

Article Title Edit

Hello,

I am working on editing the biography of Lawrence Hurst and I am having trouble editing the title of the page. Whomever made it used the shortened name "Larry" instead of Lawrence. I think for a formal article it is best to use the persons full name in the title. How can I change this?

Actually, we use the name by which the subject is most commonly known. If he's usually called "Larry", then that's what the article will be titled. See Bill Clinton or (more subtly) Gerald Ford (formally Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr., but born Leslie Lynch King Jr.). --Orange Mike | Talk 18:56, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

@Fearless lede'r: It's not something to worry about unnecessarily; as a contributor, you are welcome to join the discussion. The reasoning behind that sort of note is that it has been known for persons to be canvassed to join discussions, even via off-Wiki means, and other editors are concerned about bias or an agenda.
