PDF reference help

[edit]

I added a reference to Flashboard, but didn't get it quite right. It's a journal that is published online as a PDF. I have all the bibliographic info correct, but didn't get the url right. I don't have time to experiment with this right now, and there is some urgency since the article is at AFD. Could someone help out. Searching for "Lawrence Bragg's role in the development of sound-ranging in World War I" locates the article at several other websites besides the one I was trying to link.  Done Leschnei (talk) 02:30, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Leschnei: Thanks, but that is just an abstract of the journal. I had found a PDF of the entire journal over at www.defencesurveyors.org.uk, which was what I was trying to use in the ref. MB 03:32, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I was doing a little copyediting on Rolf Gindorf when I realized that large chunks of it are lifted from his c.v. at www.sexologie.org. This was discussed on the talk page in 2006, but there has been no discussion at all since then (except for a note that I added). I don't think that the copied text can be removed without making the article unreadable and the article is largely unreferenced. I'm not interested right now in digging for sources in English to make it notable, but maybe someone else would be. He apparently has over 60 publications, and he and his partner sued for the right to marry in the German Supreme Court. What is the best way to proceed? Leschnei (talk) 01:28, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Added a section heading below. Leschnei (talk) 02:23, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I suspect that most of the reliable sources would be in German, which I don't read. I have listed the article at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems. Leschnei (talk) 12:46, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bobby Blotzer

[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Blotzer

I suspect that this page may be getting edited by someone close to Mr. Blotzer as it keeps getting changed to reflect information that is in Mr. Blotzer's own best interest, but does not represent the facts of his main project, RATT.

Please comb through recent edit histories and use your best judgment.

VOTER'S ID

[edit]

How come my wife's and my Voter's ID which I applied over five (5) years ago here in COMELEC office-City of Malolos are still not yet processed? what's taking the comelec to issue or process the said ID? Kindly, look into this matter, Sir. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.191.146.191 (talk) 01:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 5.3 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Reference help requested. I am very lost at how to fix this. May I have advice? Thanks, Kelleher82 (talk) 04:20, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are a number of anomalies showing against various references. If you are referring to the larger red error message relating to ref name "upenn" this is because the ref name has been used (I.e <ref name=upenn/>) without it being tied to an actual reference. (I.e. <ref name=upenn>{{cite X|ref content}}</ref>). As it seems to be the only use of the ref name it may be redundant in any case. Just cite the ref. in standard fashion. Eagleash (talk) 04:51, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have fixed the other ref errors but do not know what should go in the citation "upenn". Eagleash (talk) 05:10, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Christianity in New Zealand

[edit]

Christianity in New Zealand was introduced before the missionaries got there. The Bible society translated the Book of Luke into Maori. It was through a young girls death who had a copy it and the slave boy of the chief who killed her and took it. The slave boy could read English and read it to the tribe and from his chief believing and asking forgiveness it spread through the tribes. The missionaries were surprised to find that many of the Maori were Christians when they got there. Look for the story of Tarore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.145.167.224 (talk) 05:44, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unlike Orangemike, I suspect that you are indeed referring to a problem with a Wikipedia article, Christianity in New Zealand. The place to bring up suggestions for improvement is that article's talk page Talk:Christianity in New Zealand. But please note that Wikipedia requires sources published in reliable places. I see that this supports what you say. I don't know whether or not the Kononia Institute would be regarded a reliable source; but if so then a summary could go into the article. --ColinFine (talk) 15:39, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting a Page - Request from PR Officer

[edit]

I am the author of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staffordshire_and_West_Midlands_(North_Sector)_Army_Cadet_Force .

I require this page deleting due to serious security breaches to the Army Cadet Force organisation as result of its creation. As the author, I have the right to request deletion. I have made a mistake and I have been told by those in authority over me that I am to get this page removed ASAP as it also breaches Online Safety Policy.

Can I get help with this process? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ah1997 (talkcontribs) 12:47, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged the page as an author request deletion. 331dot (talk) 12:50, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ah1997: - For the future, you need to be aware that you don't as an author automatically have the right to have your contributions removed. The conditions (just below the edit window) under which you made your contributions say "By saving changes, you agree to the Terms of Use, and you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL.". There is a concession made (WP:G7) if you are the only significant contributor to the page. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:18, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ah1997: The page has been deleted. It is now accessible only by Wikipedia administrators. (This access is unlikely to get revoked; if your superiors insist, they might want to read Pierre-sur-Haute_military_radio_station#Controversy_over_French-language_version_of_Wikipedia_article before going through the proper channels, which are located at Wikipedia:Contact us). Ah1997, you should also be aware that, assuming you mean you are the PR Office for that Force, you should not have created the page in the first place, because of your conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 19:47, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WWII Philippine Army Divisions

[edit]

Hello. I am creating new articles on WWII Philippine Army Divisions. I want to use the small box template titled US Regiments (I have left off the template brackets), but would simply like to hide the name "US Regiments" and visually replace it with "1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions"---either by copying and creating a duplicate template that simply has a different name, or by some other means in my code allowing a different title to be displayed. Here is the original template code:

Usage:

Example:

I want MY new example to look like this:

Example: {{1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions |previous=[[2nd Infantry Division (Philippines)|2nd Division (PC)]] |next=[[21st Division (Philippines)|21st Division (PA)]] }}

I am new at learning your code, navigating your help pages, and I don't know how to create a new template, or to edit the US Regiments one to make a different title be displayed (i.e. "1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions"). Either solution would work for me. Please help, and thanks! Mluklu7 (talk) 14:20, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Matt Underwood[reply]

(See Article on 11th Division (Philippines) for example of my attempt to use this box template, etc. Notice the template works; I simply need to change the title in my edit code so it will read "1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions", instead of "U.S. Infantry Regiments".) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mluklu7 (talkcontribs) 14:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mluklu7. That is a template called {{US Regiments}}, which, unsurprisingly, has the title built in. What you would need to do is create a new template called Template:1941-42 Philippine Army Divisions. You can create this - if you pick that red-link, it will let you create it; and then if you go to Template:US Regiments, and pick "edit source", you can copy the whole source of the template to the clipboard, and then paste it into your new one, and change what needs to be changed. Make sure that in your edit summary you say where you copied it from, according to WP:Copying within Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 19:56, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, ColinFine!!! I will tackle this problem, using your very helpful solution, in a few hours! (Meantime, will be traveling.) Mluklu7 (talk) 20:06, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Graham Bell

[edit]

I asked for help at Talk:Alexander Graham Bell to remove some meaningless words, but the responding editor told me I had to obtain consensus for it. Would you please fulfill the request and tell the responding editor to be less bureaucratic? My entire request was "Please remove "Margaret Ottaway" from the top of the "Canada" section, or explain what it's doing there. It looks like an actress' name, like you'd put in The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, such as "Bell meets his sister-in-law Caroline (Margaret Ottaway) in the next scene" to indicate that Ottaway was playing the character of Caroline." 208.95.51.115 (talk) 16:39, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It does look at first sight as though it doesn't belong there, but it may be a pseudonym used by 'Caroline', but this is not clear from the text. Agreement on changes (often quite small ones) is how Wikipedia works generally. Eagleash (talk) 16:48, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed it, doesn't make sense as it is Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:52, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Becky Sayles has restored it, but without the brackets, so it makes more sense. --ColinFine (talk) 20:01, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I need two questions answered.

[edit]

These two questions have been taking forever to answer; could you answer them? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Gamepad#You_might_have_already_thought_of_this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Nintendo_Switch#Can_we_.22Switch.22_this_around 2602:306:374A:8F70:F1:5064:B730:294B (talk) 20:54, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, anonymous IP editor. You posted this just 37 minutes after posting the Gamepad question, and less than three hours after posting the Nintendo Switch question - I suggest you develop patience. The Nintendo Switch question has several responses now. The Gamepad comment does not, perhaps because it is very unclear what you're getting at. Are you asking about product release, or making some kind of suggestion about the article? --Gronk Oz (talk) 05:28, 16 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template out of date

[edit]

Template:Gutenberg author uses an old link format. Can it be fixed? The code in Henry Bibb is {{Gutenberg author |id=Bibb,+Henry | name=Henry Bibb}}, but the link that it produces, https://www.gutenberg.org/author/Bibb,+Henry, no longer works. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/author/6033 is now the right link. I think the template needs to be revamped. 208.95.51.115 (talk) 21:32, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with formatting

[edit]

Hello, I'm trying to fix a formatting issue at The Homosexual Matrix. In the "online articles" section of the bibliography, two references (Lynch 1976 and Lynch 1977) have a red bot notice next to them stating "Check date values in". This is because the references are to a magazine that had a bimonthly format to describe its date (March/April 1976 in the first case, and July/August 1977 in the second case). I am not sure how to fix this. FreeKnowledgeCreator (talk) 23:22, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Use the format |date=April–May 2004. Uses en dash to separate the months. -- The Voidwalker Whispers 23:38, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
