[edit]Citing federal law
[edit]How should I cite a small quote pulled from this PDF of a US federal law? I don't know if I'd use a website format or some other format. https://nifa.usda.gov/sites/default/files/Smith-Lever%20Act.pdf --Techtonic (talk) 02:07, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Techtonic: {{cite act}} perhaps? --Majora (talk) 02:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Techtonic: The answer depends, in part, on whether you want to cite the United States Code or the bill itself. If you want to cite to the U.S. Code, you can use Template:UnitedStatesCode. That template lists other templates that you can use to cite the bill, such as Template:USBill. Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions. Flagged revisions
[edit]Hi, I'm relatively new to Wikipedia and I haven't caught up with all the consensuses that have been built over the years. Obviously, the English Wikipedia doesn't have flagged revisions, can someone point out a link that discusses the topic so I understand the consensus that was made? Thanks, Icebob99 (talk) 02:50, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Icebob99: Are you looking for how to determine consensus? Or am I misunderstanding? -- Dane2007 talk 02:53, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hi @Dane2007:, I'm looking for the discussion that determined that flagged revisions weren't going to be used on the English Wikipedia. Icebob99 (talk) 02:55, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Referencing errors on Draft:Tourism Development Bank Ltd
[edit]Reference help requested. Hi there, iam a bit confused about referencing. may be not so good at html. how to put this content in referencing>>>>http://www.sharesansar.com/c/tourism-kalinchowk-dev-bank-signed-mou-for-acquisition.html please help me. Thanks, Juren Khatri (talk) 03:55, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Juren Khatri, welcome to Wikipedia. You may wish to see referencing for beginners to know how to cite references. Specific to your query, I have added the said reference in the draft article you were working on after the first line. Check out how I have used one of the available citation templates. Ask for more help here if you get confused. Thanks. Lourdes 15:30, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Meetups
[edit]When I look at my watchlist, I see a notice at the top which reads "There are forthcoming meetups in: Cambridge, 5 November; and London, 13 November!" Why does it tell me about a forthcoming meetup which happened three days ago? Is the template broken, or have I misconfigured something? Maproom (talk) 10:58, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Maproom, hello. MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js lists both in the same text stream. That's one reason you're still seeing the Cambridge details too. Lourdes 11:49, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Transfer from sandbox to public area
[edit]In the sandbox I have now written the description of "Jacobsen elektro" for the English version of Wikipedia. I wish that we can publish that, but at this point in time I am uncertain how to do that. Do we need any confirmation or can we simply publish to the english language version. And how to publish?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lars Bache Nielsen (talk • contribs) 12:07, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Lars Bache Nielsen: You could simply move the page to mainspace yourself once you get autoconfirmed, however it is recommended to submit the draft via WP:AFC by clicking the "submit your draft for review" button at the top. Also, please sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~) or clicking the signature button above the edit box which looks like this: , but do not sign in articles. Pppery 13:31, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Correcting Page about our Club Site (Holyport Real Tennis Club)
[edit]Hello,
Yesterday I tried to update the page on Royal County of Berkshire Real Tennis Club as both the title and contents are incorrect and/or need updating. My position is Club Director of Holyport Real Tennis Club (it's correct name - see website: www.hrtc.co.uk) and I run the club for it's owners.
My changes were removed by two users yesterday and it doesn't seem clear how I respond to their messages - as I cited the information which included several third party websites that clearly show we exist, our current name, a link to our website etc. E.g. this article in the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/tennis/wimbledon/10943842/Wimbledon-simply-isnt-real-tennis.html) references the club and its correct name.
Please can you explain how I make the changes to both the page title and contents so that our club details are correct for new members and players to view.
Regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by HRTC1889 (talk • contribs) 14:12, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hello HRTC1889, welcome to Wikipedia. You may wish to read Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, which discourage editing from persons who have a close connection with the article being edited. At the same time, you may please use the Talk:Holyport Real Tennis Club page to leave comments and request edits to be made (click on the New Section link at the top of the talk page). While at it, may I encourage you to also go through Wikipedia:About#Contributing to Wikipedia? Do drop in back here if you need more help. Lourdes 15:36, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hello HRTC1889 and welcome to Wikipedia (WP). I performed myself the page move that you requested (new editors are not allowed to do this), but I strongly suggest you read the following nonetheless.
- I suspect your first edit was reverted because it included a lot of information that was not reliably sourced, and the second one was substantially similar. No matter how knowledgeable you personally are, you cannot source information to your own edit, because (1) you could pretend to be anyone on the Internet, and (2)
even if you're sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it
(from a very important Wikipedia policy, WP:Verifiability) - the idea is that a reader should be able to check for themselves what is claimed from the references within the article. - Before you edit any further, please consider the following:
- If your position at the HRTC is a paid one, which it seems to be, you fall under the provisions of WP:PAID. Do read that link entirely if nothing else, it says that you are not allowed to edit articles with which you have a connection without making a disclaimer in proper form; and even so, direct edition is not recommended.
- You have no more control over the contents of the page than a random Wikipedia editor. This is not your club's page, it is Wikipedia's page about your club. No policy supports a change of contents
so that [club details] are correct for new members and players to view
, and quite oppositely, there are policies against the inclusion of promotional material (e.g. WP:PROMO). - While your previous edits were reversed on the basis that they were not verifiable (even if your new name is, the details of the history were not in the Telegraph piece), but verifiability is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one, for the inclusion of material in Wikipedia.
- I suggest you read WP:TP to learn how to sign your posts and reply to others, if you have not already done so.
- All the best, TigraanClick here to contact me 15:40, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Your edit also included material copied verbatim from http://www.hrtc.co.uk/about-us.html, which is a copyright violation. Much of the wording is not appropriate for an encyclopedia, being too promotional, but in any case Wikipedia cannot use material which is already copyrighted elsewhere. For anything whose language is appropriate for Wikipedia, it could only be used if the copyright holder releases it through the processes described at WP:Donating copyrighted material. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:49, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Can not login
[edit]Is there someone who can give me some 'support' to login on my account. I have some serious problems, when I try this I get the text: "No active login attempt is in progress for your session"
Greetings, Peters01 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.104.223.208 (talk) 17:30, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- It would help if you could provide more details. I suppose you are User:Peters01? What are the exact steps you perform to try to login (URL where you try to type your credentials, result of the attempt, etc.)? (Obviously, do not post the password...) TigraanClick here to contact me 18:12, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- I had the same problem for ~3 hours this morning. Same error message, "No active login...". I tried logging in using a PC Workstation, a MacPro and a laptop, without success on any. I cleared my cookies and cache. I rebooted my computers. I tried different browsers, Safari, Chrome and Explorer. No success. Something puzzling went wrong. It wasn't my login name nor a case of mistyped password (I re-re-checked caps on and the usual). Nor was it a slow connection (I am on a 100MB-1GBps network). I went for a hike, had a nice cup of tea, read up a few sources on Temne people – irrelevant these details may be, but hey! @Peters01, thats what I did. Then I contacted @Dr. Blofeld, @Joshua Jonathan, @Kautilya3 by email. @Dr. Blofeld posted a message at wikipedia's village pump, asking for help. A little later, I tried logging in again. Someone or something had fixed the problem. I was able to log in. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:59, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- I had the same kind of problems yesterday. I cleared all Wikimedia-related caches on my browser (Firefox) and it solved the problem. --Stryn (talk) 19:06, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hello Tigraan, I have the same problems as Ms Sarah Welch, I can not login on my account (User:Peters01). But her problems are fixed, maybe someone can help me too! 84.104.223.208 (talk) 19:59, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Peters01: What browser and computer system are you using to log in? Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 21:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- My PC Workstation is HP and browsers Chrome and Explorer. 84.104.223.208 (talk) 22:59, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Peters01: What browser and computer system are you using to log in? Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 21:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Tigraan: Any ideas? Apparently @Peters01 has already tried clearing the cache. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 02:49, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- 84.104.223.208, Tigraan, Ms Sarah Welch, this issue was noticed a few years ago and resolved at that time. As I see the issue has resurfaced, the two alternatives could be to advise the ip to create a new account and work on that and/or to report this issue at phab following the recommended guidelines. Lourdes 03:45, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- Still can not login on my account, i am not a 'web wizard' and can not create a new account (because of my registered IP adress) that is not possible. If this 'problem' is not be solved, i can no longer edit on Dutch and English Wiki (because i am Dutch i have the same problems). Ms sarah Welch has the same problems, but they are fixed. Maybe someone can fix this for me too! 31.177.37.3 (talk) 08:40, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- There is phab:T150287. Stryn (talk) 10:53, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- "Can not create a new account (because of my registered IP adress) that is not possible." 31.177.37.3, what do you mean by that? Lourdes 10:27, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- I am probably in the lower tier of wiki-computer-wizardy compared to those who answer that kind of questions, so do not expect much from me. However:
- You should be able to create a new account from the same IP address; disclose it on the user page for WP:VALIDALT (though, if you get checkuser'd, you probably did something wrong along the way...). Of course that is not a satisfying solution though.
- Thanks for the browser details, but you did not provide the URL you try to log to. Is it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:UserLogin or something else? The issue at [1] seems to be related with using the mobile site on desktop.
- TigraanClick here to contact me 10:40, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- My apologies, but after i have created a new account it was possible to login in my former account. So the problem is fixed, but i still do not know what the reason was for this (possibly a 'bug' or something else). Many thanks for your support and advice! Wikiproject
[edit]How do you add an article to a Wikiproject? Spike789 Talk 22:07, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Anyone can add articles to a project by attaching the project's banner to an article's talk page. Likewise, anyone can remove banners, so don't be surprised if the members of a project determine that the article you tagged is not within their scope. Further discussion may be necessary at the project's talk page. WP:WikiProject coordination. --Moxy (talk) 22:18, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- @Spike789: WikiProject banners can usually be found on the WikiProject page or a subcategory of Category:WikiProject banner templates. You can also look for banners on the talk page of similar articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:23, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Non-Free image use over at Siege Week
[edit]Could somebody with a bit more knowledge of NFCC have a look over at Siege Week please? There are currently five non-free images in use on the page, all of which are essentially the same (IMO) so I removed four of them - only to be reverted by the inserting editor with the rationale of "Imagery illustrates content of article" - which I don't dispute, but I also don't think that five non-free images is the way to do it.
Rather than edit-war, I thought I'd ask here what is advised.
Although not required, I've left a talkback for FryUp32 letting him know this post has been made.
For the record, I became aware of the images when noticing that the editor had also added them to the Gag page, which I already have watchlisted. Chaheel Riens (talk) 23:03, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- I shall be nominating them all for FFD and removing them from the articles where there is no FUR. --Majora (talk) 23:07, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- All done. No real need to remove them from the article. They will be deleted as it is a clear violation of our fair use policy. --Majora (talk) 23:12, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- There are several images on Wikipedia uploaded with the same Fair Use rationale. I see no reason why these images are against the fair use policy. They are not. I have taken the point onboard about the images being relatively similar and have reduced the amount on the page. I think this is absolutely satisfactory. There is no dispute as to the images illustrating the content of the article, therefore the images that remain should stay intact. Thanks --FryUp32 (talk) 00:34, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
- Folks, I suggest you take it to WP:FFD and/or WP:CP rather than arguing it on the Help Desk. TigraanClick here to contact me 10:44, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
- It is being discussed over at FFD, as prompted by Majora: Wikipedia:Files_for_discussion#Non-free_clips_of_Siege_Week. I brought it up here initially because I was unsure of what to do. Chaheel Riens (talk) 10:51, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
