I am nominating this featured article for review because... It fails criteria 2 (about lead, citations as well as about the structure). The article also has many claims that are not sourced and needs a lot of work. The lead doesn't properly summarize the article. I left a message on talk page of the article but there is no response so came for review. Right now, it is in a bad condition and should be delisted unless very hard work is done on it →TSU tp* 09:08, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Can you please indicate paragraphs/sentences needing citation? You can comment here in the review, or add citation needed tags in the article. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 02:28, 10 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Also, can you please explain what exactly did you mean by "...about the structure"? Do you think there is any abnormality about the structure of the article? Please point out that, so that it can be rectified. Thanks a lot.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:43, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- History - The region of modern day Bangalore was part of several successive South Indian kingdoms. After centuries of the rule of the Western Gangas, the region was captured by the Cholas in 1024. In 1116 the Hoysala Empire overthrew the Cholas and extended its rule over the region. Modern Bangalore had its beginning in 1537 by a vassal of the Vijayanagara Empire, Kempe Gowda I, who built a mud-brick fort at the site that would become central part of modern Bangalore. During the Vijayanagara rule, Bangalore was also referred to as "Devarāyanagara" and "Kalyānapura" ("Auspicious City"). After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, Bangalore's rule changed hands several times. In 1638, a large Bijapur army led by Ranadulla Khan and accompanied by Shahji Bhonsle defeated Kempe Gowda III, and Bangalore was given to Shahaji as a jagir (feudal estate). After the death of Krishnaraja Wodeyar II in 1759, Hyder Ali, Commander-in-Chief of the Mysore Army, proclaimed himself the de facto ruler of Mysore. The kingdom later passed to Hyder Ali's son Tipu Sultan. Following Tipu Sultan's death in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799), the British returned administrative control of the Bangalore "pētē" to the Maharaja of Mysore, choosing only to retain the Cantonment under their jurisdiction. The 'Residency' of Mysore State was first established in Mysore city in 1799 and later shifted to Bangalore in the year 1804. It was abolished in the year 1843 only to be revived in 1881 at Bangalore and to be closed down permanently in 1947, with Indian independence. Bangalore was hit by a plague epidemic in 1898 that dramatically reduced its population. New extensions in Malleswaram and Basavanagudi were developed in the north and south of the pētē. Telephone lines were laid to help co-ordinate anti-plague operations, and a health officer was appointed to the city in 1898. Bangalore's reputation as the Garden City of India began in 1927 with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. Several projects such as the construction of parks, public buildings and hospitals were instituted to improve the city. After Indian independence in August 1947, Bangalore remained in the new Mysore State of which the Maharaja of Mysore was the Rajapramukh (appointed governor). Bangalore experienced rapid growth in the decades 1941–51 and 1971–81, which saw the arrival of many immigrants from northern Karnataka In the decades that followed, Bangalore's manufacturing base continued to expand with the establishment of private companies such as MICO (Motor Industries Company), which set up its manufacturing plant in the city. In 1985, Texas Instruments became the first multinational corporation to set up base in Bangalore. Other information technology companies followed suit and by the end of the 20th century, Bangalore had established itself as the Silicon Valley of India.
- Geography - The Government of Karnataka has carved out the new district of Ramanagara from the old Bangalore Rural district. In the 16th century, Kempe Gowda I constructed many lakes to meet the town's water requirements. The Kempambudhi Kere, since overrun by modern development, was prominent among those lakes. In the earlier half of 20th century, the Nandi Hills waterworks was commissioned by Sir Mirza Ismail (Diwan of Mysore, 1926–41 CE) to provide a water supply to the city.
- Civic administration - Bangalore's rapid growth has created several problems relating to traffic congestion and infrastructural obsolescence that the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has found challenging to address. The unplanned nature of growth in the city resulted in massive traffic gridlocks that the municipality attempted to ease by constructing a flyover system and by imposing one-way traffic systems. The BBMP works with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and the Agenda for Bengaluru Infrastructure and Development Task Force (ABIDe) to design and implement civic projects. Bangalore generates about 3,000 tonnes of solid waste per day, of which about 1,139 tonnes are collected and sent to composting units such as the Karnataka Composting Development Corporation.
- Transport - Bangalore is served by the Bengaluru International Airport (IATA: BLR, ICAO: VOBL) which started operations from 24 May 2008 The airport is around 40 km from the city centre. The most hassle-free way to commute is by taxi. Meru cabs and Easy cabs have taxis present in the rank at the airport. There are also certain private cab companies. The sprawling Rail Wheel Factory is Asia's second largest manufacturer of Wheel & Axle for Railways and headquartered in Yelahanka, Bangalore. Three-wheeled, green and black auto-rickshaws, referred to as autos, are a popular form of transport. They are metered and can accommodate up to three passengers. Taxi services within Bangalore is provided by several operators. Taxis, commonly called City Taxis, are usually available only on call. Taxis are metered and are generally more expensive than auto-rickshaws. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation operates 6,918 buses on 6,352 schedules, connecting Bangalore with other parts of Karnataka as well as other states. The main bus depots that BMTC maintains are the Kempegowda Bus Station, locally known as "Majestic", Shantinagar Bus Depot, and Shivajinagar Bus Depot.
- Culture - Dasara, a traditional celebration of the old Kingdom of Mysore, is the state festival and is celebrated with great vigour. Bangalore also has a very active and vibrant theatre culture.Bangalore is the home to Amateur/Short film Industry of south India. The diversity of cuisine is reflective of the social and economic diversity of Bangalore. Roadside vendors, tea stalls, and South Indian, North Indian, Chinese and Western fast food are all very popular in the city. Udupi restaurants are very popular and serve predominantly vegetarian, regional cuisine. Bangalore has a wide and varied mix of restaurant types and cuisines and Bangaloreans deem eating out as an intrinsic part of their culture, so much that Bangalore Restaurant Week – an event that involved some of the best restaurants in Bangalore – was held between 12 to 21 November 2010. Bangalore is also a major center of Indian classical music and dance. Classical music and dance recitals are widely held throughout the year and particularly during the Ramanavami and Ganesha Chaturthi festivals. The Bengaluru Gayana Samaja has been at the forefront of promoting classical music and dance in the city.
- Education - The western system of education was introduced during the rule of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, when two schools were established in Bangalore Alternatively, students may also enroll in Diploma courses. Upon completing the required coursework, students enroll in general or professional degrees in universities. The Bangalore University, established in 1886, provides affiliation to about 500 colleges, with a total student enrolment exceeding 300,000.
- Media - There are two operational community radio stations in Bangalore called Radio Active and Ramana Voices, managed by Mahaveer Jain College and Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy of the Blind (SRMAB), respectively. The latter is being co-managed by a media advocacy group in Bangalore called VOICES. Bangalore has a number of newspapers and magazines that cater to the varied interests. number of news channels operate in the city, as well as in the state too. Magazines like Open and 080 cater to lifestyle, citizen issues and fashion, newspapers like Mid-Day, Bangalore Mirror, Vijaya Karnataka provide localised news updates. On the web, Explocity provides listings information. Deccan Herald, The Times of India and The Hindu provide e-paper services.
- Sports - Cricket is the most popular sport in Bangalore Many children play gully cricket on the roads and in the city's many public fields. Bangalore is also home to the Bangalore Rugby Football Club (B.R.F.C)
- Neutrality or choice of bad-words and framing of sentences. And also not sourced
- As a large and growing metropolis, Bangalore is home to many well-recognized colleges and research institutions in India. (In the lead) (well known? which? and how they are well-recognized?)
- that stuff is mentioned in the relevant section - lead is supposed to be a summary. read the guideline on writing leads. the relevant section mentions clearly about the notability of iisc, iimb and nlsiu among others. 117.192.201.244 (talk) 06:06, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Bangalore's rapid growth has created several problems relating to traffic congestion and infrastructural obsolescence that the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has found challenging to address (how? since when? and what is done regarding it or is doing?)
- i've rearranged the sentencens in that section. its no longer an open ended statement. since when? is a bad question. rome wasn't buily in a day, and in the same way, bangalore's traffic didn't increase in one day 117.192.201.244 (talk) 06:06, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- A 2003 Battelle Environmental Evaluation System (BEES) evaluation of Bangalore's physical, biological and socioeconomic parameters indicated that Bangalore's water quality and terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems were close to ideal, while the city's socioeconomic parameters (traffic, quality of life) scored poorly. (sounds odd)
- what exactly is odd here? 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:29, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The growth of IT has presented the city with unique challenges. (how?)
- its explained in the next sentence, the sentence after that, the one after that as well. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:29, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- and US based companies like....have their research and development centres along with their corporate offices in Bangalore. (US based? ok, but what is the point in specifying about a country)
- i've removed that whole sentence-it was nothing but an endless list 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:32, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The most hassle-free way to commute is by taxi. Meru cabs and Easy cabs have taxis present in the rank at the airport. There are also certain private cab companies. (private cab companies, which? and what makes them notable?)
- i agree that the sentence doesn't sound very good, but if you want to mention which cab companies offer services, then you'd need another whole section for that-there are hundreds of small taxi operatoes 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:32, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Three-wheeled, green and black auto-rickshaws, referred to as autos, are a popular form of transport. (popular?)
- retrieved ref from old version and added it. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:43, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- They are metered and can accommodate up to three passengers. (3 passengers? everywhere it is the same so why this is in the article, not at all related and goes off-focus)
- you know and i know that autos can accommodate 3 passengers. everyone doesn't know. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:43, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Taxi services within Bangalore is provided by several operators. (several? which? how many? and since when?)
- removed sentence 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:49, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Taxis, commonly called City Taxis, are usually available only on call. {how? who started this and when? this are avaible everywhere so how is this notable? again going off-focus)
- how? just call em and they'll pick ya up. who started this? immaterial, and probably even impossible to tell. mentioning that would be taking it off focus. when? is a good question-we should try and get some refs for it. i don't think you understand how to write an encyclopaedic article-you dont' say stuff lyk 'this is there everywhere, so why do we mention it'. read this page like an outsider and youll need max useful info from it. it may be obvious to you, but it isn't to everybody.117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:59, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Excuse me? I think that you are not aware that how to work on encyclopedia. First of all ref is searched then the content is added. I agree that it is worth mentioning but useless without a ref. Even reading like an outsider would confuse me as I'd have 1 straight question; why only on call?' Also as an outsider, without a ref, I'd consider this as an "Original research" and would be sad to see such articles having FA status. — TheSpecialUser (TSU) 05:30, 14 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Taxis are metered and are generally more expensive than auto-rickshaws. (yes they are, but only in banglore?)
- you clearly havent been to chennai. 117.192.201.244 (talk) 06:08, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Dasara, a traditional celebration of the old Kingdom of Mysore, is the state festival and is celebrated with great vigour. (vigour? aren't other festivals celebrated? as this is in the 1st line and not a good intro)
- agreed and removed. plus i dun think its a state festival or anythin. also, mysore is famous for its dasara-not bangalore.117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:06, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- because of its greenery and the presence of many public parks, including the Lal Bagh and Cubbon Park. (how are they special to be included?)
- special enough to have their own articles117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:06, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The city celebrates its most important and oldest festival, "Karaga Shaktyotsava" or Bangalore Karaga. (don't they celebrate other festivals?)
- they do. read the whole paragraph. i've modified it anyway.117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:27, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Bangalore also has a very active and vibrant theatre culture (neutral?)
- i've expanded the sentence with refs. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:27, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The diversity of cuisine is reflective of the social and economic diversity of Bangalore (not so neutral or proper)
- added refs and rearranged whole section along with refs. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:57, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Bangalore is also a major center of Indian classical music and dance. (is a major? it should be: one of the major with ref)
- sentence is proper. added ref. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:57, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The Bengaluru Gayana Samaja has been at the forefront of promoting classical music and dance in the city. (doesn't anyone else do that and how they are specifically important. it goes off-focus)
- sentence removed. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 07:57, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- The city has a vibrant English and regional language theatre scene with organisations such as Ranga Shankara and Chowdiah Memorial Hall leading the way. (neutral?)
- Currently, Vijaya Karnataka and The Times of India are the most widely circulated Kannada and English newspapers in Bangalore respectively, closely followed by the Prajavani and Deccan Herald both owned by the Printers (Mysore) Limited – the largest print media house in Karnataka (currently? since when and how?)
- Bangalore got its first radio station when All India Radio,... (banglore got its first?)
- In recent years, a number of FM channels have started broadcasting from Bangalore. (since when?)
- There are two operational community radio stations in Bangalore called Radio Active and Ramana Voices, managed by Mahaveer Jain College and Shree Ramana Maharishi Academy of the Blind (SRMAB), respectively. The latter is being co-managed by a media advocacy group in Bangalore called VOICES. (latter? since when and why?)
- Bangalore has a number of newspapers and magazines that cater to the varied interests. number of news channels operate in the city, as well as in the state too (so what? they are everywhere. This sounds odd)
- Cricket is the most popular sport in Bangalore. (most?)
- A significant number of national cricketers have come from Bangalore, (significant number?)
- Outdated things
- In the history section, there is nothing about the city after 1990 so there are no changes happened in the city?
- In demographics, there are details about 2001, but what about 2011?
- Many refs are retrieved before 2010 in the facts that do change with time. So I seriously doubt the factual accuracy. Thus, please do add As of 20.. or In 20.. in those out-dated sentences.
- Structure
- The lead needs IPA
- The lead doesn't at all summerize the article
- Climate, geography, sports, media, culture, demographics, transport, non of this details are in the lead
- Culture section - it is in the worst form in the whole article. The start and the contents in the section later are different. I believe that the intor of the section should at least sumerize something about the details
- Same problem with economy.
- Same with Media
- Same with Sports
- Portals - geography, asia, south-asia, india, karnataka, and benglore. I think that only the state and the city's portals are enough like other FAs and GAs have.
- See also - Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli and Karnataka are useless there as their links are already included.
- I think that this article isn't also a GA and it is eligible B-class article. There are still many other issues, I m writing them in short time. Thanks! →TSU tp* 04:38, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Many older versions of the article are better and more like what featured article should look like. instead of taking time out to write critiques of the present version, better would time be spent actually improving the article. IPA is there in older versions, so are many other stuff that is mentioned here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.192.215.132 (talk • contribs)
- Can you please provide the links? →TSU tp* 01:28, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- find it yerself laddie, go to history and search for 2006 or 07 version
- and your comments about the history section are very narrow minded and uneducated-only notable events and facts are listed in the history sectionn. if we mention all recent events, then it won't be a history. currently it is mentioned upto end of 20th century and this should be fyn.
- First of all, please read WP:CIVIL. I have gone to history of 2006 and 2007 but haven't found the thing that you are talking about. Please provide me the link yourself if you get it
- Secondly, See New York City (which will be FA candidate shortly) and London (GA). They have something about 21st century in history. Not everything, but there should be coverage of something like major incidents, bomb-attacks, etc. This version of the article is not fine and FA standards have improved thus, this article no more passes FAC. Thanks! →TSU tp* 01:57, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- sorry kid, for an editor, you need ta grow thicker skin. anyhoo, here's your homework: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bangalore&oldid=97280041 or this one from 2008 http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bangalore&oldid=186076789 . sure, show us some recent events which cannot be included in any other section and include it in history section. i can't think of anything.
- what i mean by lookin at older versions are that some stuff can be copied directly from those versions because they are of Fa standard. even whole sections probably can be ripped off and slightly modified
- by da way, look at articles on San Francisco and seattle. both are featurred articles, and the history sections don't mention any event after 2000. if der are any events to be mentioned, then mention it-if der are nothin, den don't mention anythin!!
- I still believe that something should be there regarding history after 2000. This isn't a big issue. But there are other problems also which make it not eligible for FA. →TSU tp* 06:08, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- one at a time. i dont see many notable events after 2000. don't mention it just fer da sake of it. 117.216.159.19 (talk) 06:25, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]- Concerns in the review section focused on referencing, prose and MOS compliance. Dana boomer (talk) 13:50, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delist - per issues above. Few of them are resolved but still there are many lines and claims which are unsourced. Also, the facts are outdated at few places especially in Demographics. Many things were cited in 05 or 06 or 07 and since then it has changed but not in the article. Things also need clarification that when did they started or occurred. + The lead doesn't summarize the article. There are too many citetaion needed tags and few things make it go off-topic like portals in see also section. After all the work done on the article, still it is nowhere near to FA status. →TSU tp* 02:47, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Delist A lot of talk, but no action. Very few of the problems have seriously been addressed. Ten Pound Hammer • (What did I screw up now?) 03:12, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
