- The filters have (mostly) prevented you from inserting spamlinks to the yourtownie.net website; in other words, they did what they were intended to do. - Talk:Israeli West Bank barrier (filter log) (redo)
- Description
- There is an evident attempt by some editor to prevent any contributions from me on ideological grounds, without going through any administrative procedures that would require proper consultation and ratification with other managers of the webpage or even notification of me. Every time I try to post a contribution to this page, a warning comes up on the screen "An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error." But although I have tried to report this as a false positive, no clear response has emerged. As an example of what is blocked, here is the record of my last attempt, starting with the just previous entry by "Harlan" to which I responded:
- I've never heard of a campaign to de-legitimize Israel or the Wall. Every other country in the world has voted in favor of resolutions saying that Israel's actions in the OPT "have no legitimacy" in the first place, and the Wall was just the latest example. P.S. I reverted you because there are a number of well known lists of laws in Israel that discriminate against the citizens of non-Jewish nationality. See for example page 26 of Apartheid against the Palestinian People [1] harlan (talk) 15:21, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- Wikipedia policy on NPOV insists that on debated points each side must be allowed a description of their position in an impartial and fair way, and that the disagreement of some editors merely to the expression of such differing viewpoints is not a sufficient grounds for reverting the contribution. See the relevant policy statement on WP:NPOV
- The comment on "Wikipedia policy" was my post to the Talk page that somehow triggered the "automatic filter." I would suggest that there is nothing objectionable in this remark by me. It is therefore obvious that the "automated filter" has simply been set by a knowledgeable editor to reject any and all contributions from me, for an indefinite length of time. Unlike properly administered blocks, the perpetrator of this remains completely autonomous and so need not give an account of himself to anyone, or to justify it in terms of Wikipedia policy. And also unlike properly administered blocks, the filter has no time limit and allows for no return to the Talk Page at all. There is no notice of this block on my own Talk page, and when I search in the Administrators Notice page for blocks I do not find that there have been any listed against my IP address. I would like this "automated filter" to be reset so that I am allowed back into the Talk Page, and if possible, the perpetrator of this vandalism blocked himself. Please note that I have tried before to bring this to the attention of administrators here, on the 6th of August, and no help has been forthcoming, so this is a new appeal.
- It should be added, as explanatory background to the above-quoted exchange on the Talk Page, that what evoked the comment by "Harlan" was my defending my proposed contribution to the main article that, in the context of reporting pro-Israel views, mentioned that critics of the "apartheid/racism" label say that Israel is a liberal democracy that extends equal rights in law to all its citizens, including Israeli Arabs. Whether or not Harlan agrees with this is therefore irrelevant: the point is that pro-Israel commentators assert this, and fairness and WP:NPOV demands that this be mentioned when describing the pro-Israel viewpoints, without negative slanting or intrusive refutation, dispassionately and objectively. Furthermore, one of the sources I cited from pro-Israel commentators happened to assert that the "apartheid" claim is part of an attempt to "delegitimize" Israel. Again, whether or not this fits Harlan's POV is irrelevant, as is his arguing with me about it or reverting the contribution on this basis: the source actually says this, as a matter of objective fact. I go on at such length about this here, since I have been gagged from any response on the Talk page in question.

- None of this was due to any filter. Choyoołʼįįhí:Seb az86556 > haneʼ 08:01, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- What was it due to, then? As mentioned, it is not a properly constituted "block." But it calls itself a "filter." The notice that comes up every time I seek to contribute to the webpage is: "An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, and it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error." So is this notice in error? What is certain is that "filter" or not, it prevents me from participating in the Talk Page or Main Article. And, beyond that, how about canceling it and acting against its perpetrators, since it is illegitimate and an abuse of Wiki procedures?

The filter sees signatures as just the raw tildes, even though they appear as normal on the page itself. So when someone signs with more than five tildes, it will trigger the "repeating characters" tag. Although we could add an exemption for tildes, it doesnt seem to happen very often. I;m not sure why Baron Nicholas is signing with 3 tildes plus 5 tildes anyway, as that only does the same thing that 4 tildes would do. —Soap— 11:36, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

To move a page is different than replacing it with a link to that other location. However unfortunately page moving is restricted to users with more than ten edits, so you would not have been able to do that. Even so, though, a better thing to do would be to nominate the page for deletion (either WP:AFD or WP:CSD depending on the reason), because even an experienced user generally shouldnt be deleting or even moving a page to another user's userspace without prior agreement. 3 ¢ soap Talk/Contributions 09:50, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

To the original reporter: Please make sure youre not running a Skype plugin for Firefox, as it has a tendency to corrupt the edits you make to any page in a way that cannot be fixed without disabling the extension. EVen "good" edits you make with the Skype plugin enabled would have to be fixed by someone else to remove the code inserted by Skype, which is why this particular filter is in place. 3 ¢ soap Talk/Contributions 08:53, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

This kind of false positive is not really possible to prevent. This is a filter that prevents an editor from removing large amounts of content from another user's talk page (or subpages of it). Even if you have changed your mind about posting there, the text would still show up as a new edit and the user would likely go check to see what you had written. Still I can remove the text for you if you'd like. —Soap— 00:06, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

- This is the second time I've filed a false positive for this page, so I apologize if I am ignoring some Wikipedia rule or generally being a bother. Apparently this page is being flagged as violating copyright, but I cannot figure out why. If someone could help me figure out why this page is being blocked I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your response.

The edit filter isn't related to the issue of the copyright. I'll answer on your talk page since this could get long and drawn-out. Ive also changed the header to Ukguyspriggs (2) to make it easier to link to. —Soap— 23:26, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

- In the introductory sentence describing natural selection I tried to change "One is natural selection, which causes traits that aid survival and reproduction to become more common, and traits that hinder survival and reproduction to become more rare" to "One is natural selection, through which traits that aid survival and reproduction become more common, while traits that hinder survival and reproduction become more rare." This is an important change because the linear flow of the beginning of the sentence sounds like it is stating that natural selection "causes traits that aid survival." My change makes it clear from the beginning of the sentence that natural selection is not "causing traits" directly. It is important to make clear that natural selection is simply a descriptive term explaining a process that happens automatically.

Done, but I would suggest if you have further changes you want to make you should bring them up on talk:Evolution since people there would be more educated, and because due to the article being 'protected' new edits have to be approved before they will appear anyway. (i.e. removing the edit filter would not get the edits to appear immediately) —Soap— 10:15, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Hart and his cronies were attempting to delete any evaluations of his work that balance the positive and negative. He wants only positive reviews of his work on his Wikipedia page. THis is ridiculous. I am attempting to restore the page to a more balanced version of the article before the flatterers got control of it. The page as it exists now is in violation of NPOV because it has only generic praise of Hart. Please restore and lock in the version I have tried to restore as this version is the most neutral one out there.

This filter produces very few false positives, so please make sure you've disabled the Skype plugin for Firefox, as it has a tendency to corrupt the edits you make to any page in a way that cannot be fixed without disabling the extension. Even "good" edits you make with the Skype plugin enabled would have to be fixed by someone else to remove the code inserted by Skype, which is why this particular filter is in place. —Soap— 09:17, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I cant really help you here. The edit filter will not let you blank a page; beyond that, it has no role in editorial disputes and therefore neither do I. If you wish to change information you should really bring it up on the talk page of the article, but note that your being an official representation for Denise Milani does not give you any higher authority on Wikipedia to declare content legitimate or illegitimate. Unquestionably libelous information will be removed, but not to replace it with promotional material. We are like a newspaper in some ways. If you want to see the page deleted you can ask that your account be unblocked and then bring the article to Articles for Deletion. —Soap— 22:06, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

I know that you've been through the process of recommending to create an account before, and that you've hit this particular filter before. "New" users (which includes all IP's even if they have thousands of edits, since IP's can be dynamic) are restricted to making only a few redirects every few minutes, because it is often a tactic used by vandals to blank many pages without the edits being seen as blanking. It is unfortunate that it affects innocent users as well but not really feasible to make exceptions for. However if you ever do decide to register an account you will be recognized as the "same" user every time and thus not tagged as "new". —Soap— 13:25, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

- I was trying to update the live performance area with a new, updated Atlantic Record Sucks shirt in his 2010 tour going on right now. I also tried removing a line that says he does parodies without permission, which isn't true. One incident with Gangster paradise was confusion between Record labels. Al was told he could parody the song and make it into Amish Paradise, but there was some type of confusion, which I would go into detail about if I could update the page without it telling me that I was trying to put something unconstructive onto the page.

If you type out the "ATLANTIC RECORDS SUCKS" in normal sentence case (as it is in the caption) it will not set off the filter. I know that it's capitalized on the shirt (at least the visible one), but it would be troublesome to make exceptions like this, in part because it slows the filters down, and in part because it reads the words off a long list, so to exempt one word is to exempt them all. Also, for the content you're planning to add, please make sure you have reliable references for it. —Soap— 23:07, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

A more recent article in following Justcurio can be seen here. CROWD SOURCED ANSWERSItalic text
The Basics Part 1
Ok we all know that crowd source can be a fantastic tool and if used correctly can also be a great benefit for anyone involved.
Crowd Sourced? What is that?
Most everybody has either communicated with a crowd-sourcing, or have heard of it by another name…Think of ‘call centers’, commonly found in 3rd world countries.
That, Virginia, is Crowd-Sourcing.
You have a broken product but you don’t want to have to buy a new one or you are pretty sure it can be fixed. You may just have lost the instructions or be unsure of a feature.
Who ya gonna call… Ghostbusters….?
Wait no that’s not right
First off you do your own thing and turn the house upside down looking for those pesky destructions or examine your product to see if you think you can fix it. OK so that was a FAIL, but you are determined to see what can be done.
The “INTERNET”
Let’s go to the manufacturer’s web site and dang it didn’t you know they don’t have any help for my problem or they went bust or they even want way too much money !!
There has to be others out there with this problem… Sure the INTERNET has many great pockets of information and you just need to find the right one so you type in your product name and WHOA… 1,000,000,000,000,000 bits of information and you don’t even know which one to try first.
So you realize you need to narrow it down so you add your MODEL… Ah that’s a little better, that took a few zeros off the list, but it is still crowded with information overload.
OK let’s add just a little about the problem “FIX MY thingamajigs XXL version1.0”Cool, that’s way better and hey look a few places that specialize in fixing em.
BUT they want more than I paid, so they are all out. But what about these places “Let our experts help you!” That sounds to be worth a shot.
Right this site wants money but it doesn’t look all that expensive so let’s give it a whirl I already tried a few FREE ones and am still not sure
The place you are probably about to visit is known as a “crowd sourced” web site. The theory behind crowd sourcing is that every person has something of value to someone. Those individuals can share life experiences alongside those with a lifetime of qualified experience. Sharing what was learned when facing a similar problem.
But what issues can your crowd source experts deal with, and what problems can arise from this.
There are lots of self help web sites on the internet and for a moment I want to concentrate on three of them. "http://www.justanswer.com" JustAnswer.com, "http://www.fixya.com" FixYa.com, "http://answers.yahoo.com/" YAHOO.com are all PRIME examples of crowd sourced websites These are the same type of site for our purpose and offer expert for hire to solve anything from a leaking tap to the brakes on your car.
Let’s now look at the obvious basic differences between these sites

I will let someone else answer this, since I'm the one who's been reverting your edits the most. However, to answer why the filter is triggering: 1) You are removing all of the categories that help people find the page as well as the interwiki links to other languages. I assume this is a mistake, but you should be careful not to do that. 2) You shouldnt use "big big" type headings on Wikipedia; use the kind that is already there. 3) You removed most of the content that was on the page, which is a filterable action in and of itself. None of these are set to "disallow", because they can all be fixed, but they arent the reason Ive been reverting your edits. —Soap— 00:13, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

I think the "ALLCAPS" vandalism prevention filter cannot see the difference between ASS and P</big>ASS, unfortunately, and this filter isn't conducive to whitelisting words because of the way it works ... to whitelist one word is to whitelist them all. I will do the edit in a minute. I've also added an exception that will work just on this page by looking for other text that appears in the inscription, so that in case you want to work with the text some more you wont immediately have the same problem. —Soap— 23:47, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

There is a filter that limits the number of page moves that can be done in a certain amount of time, except for certain highly-active users who become exempt after a long period of activity on Wikipedia. However, the real issue here is whether those pages should be renamed or not. Since your edits have been undone, if you still think they should be renamed you should start a discussion on talk:Ballon D'Or. —Soap— 16:02, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

There is a filter that prevents users from making more than a certain number of page moves in a specified time; this time has surely elapsed by now so you could make the page moves. However by creating Sex machine you've made it impossible to move Sex-machine there; do you want it with or without the hyphen? —Soap— 16:37, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

There is a new edit filter that detects advertising and promotional content placed on userpages. I think it is too strict, but it was clearly coded this way deliberately, so rather than change it immediately I will mention this situation to the author. Actually, it looks like it's already been loosened somewhat and it would not have triggered if you had made the same edits today. Unfortunately there's no way to remove the tag from your edit history at this time; filter logs are unchangeable just as edit summaries are unchangeable. —Soap— 21:45, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yep I understand that; but clearly, it's a bit too strict eh? :-) 21:47, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- However, merely having this tag in your edit history probably doesn't matter. Unless you have a large number of such tags, I doubt any admin would take action against you over the tagged edits without frst checking them. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 05:15, 30 August 2010 (UTC)

It is not presently possible to have a filter that reliably distinguishes between email address and URL's that contain email-like strings; this has a word, an @ sign, and a domain, and so does a properly formatted email address. I hope that I am responding appropriately and in the correct place. I am new at this and appreciate your assistance. I am the author's son and am attempting to update his entry. Using other authors on WikiPedia as a guide, we have attempted to follow similar formats- George Garrett, for instance, a former [deceased] colleague and friend of David Madden <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Garrett_%28poet%29>. The information I posted appears on David Madden's professional website and is a complete biography and bibliography of the writer's work <http://www.davidmadden.net/?page_id=300>. I apologize for making such a dramatic change to the original article and didn't realize that I was not proceeding correctly. Please give specific guidance, if possible. Many thanks- Blake Madden
- The George Garrett article is really not ideal, because it cites an enormous amount of information to just a single source, but the main difference is that is an external source, whereas davidmadden.net is presumably owned and/or written by David Madden. This is not to say that Im accusing him of embellishing his own accomplishments, but that if anyone challenged the information, there would be nowhere to go to verify it. The other thing that you should keep in mind is that there is rarely if ever a reason to remove previously existing content from a page; if you want to add to the page, add to it, preferably adding your words in-line with the sections they would best belong in.
- If you find my talk page more convenient, you can use that; this thread will be archived from this page soon anyway. —Soap— 21:36, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

It certainly isnt completely a hoax because there is a website in the References section which backs up many of the claims in the article, at http://www.muziejai.lt/kaunas/galauniu_muziejus.en.htm. —Soap— 22:12, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

- I've removed the picture. There is a Lithuanian version of the article which seems better-referenced; fact-checking it with the English is complicated by the fact that Lithuanian is one of the most impenetrable languages of Europe and that there are not many automated translators for it. The article apparently cleared DYK, which is usually pretty good about fact-checking, but hoaxes have made it there before. I promise to look into this but as of now there's little I can do but look for someone who speaks Lithuanian and ideally someone who can verify the source material. Still you shouldn't be blanking the article unless it's entirely a hoax and cannot be rewritten from the Lithuanian source material. —Soap— 22:36, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- For your information, if you think an article is a hoax, there are 3 ways if handling it:
- Discuss it on the talk page
- Add a {{hoax}} tag at the top of the page
- Nominate it for deletion - see the policies for proposed deletion and Articles for Deletion.

- Yes, that is indeed a false positive. {{Hndis}} is one of eleven templates used to categorize disambiguation pages, and theoretically all could produce similar false positives. Presently, only the main template, {{disambig}}, is exempted from the filter. They could all be, but I'm not sure if it's common enough to put in another ten exceptions. I'd like to wait for comment from other edit filter managers. Someguy1221 (talk) 10:01, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

You may not have realized it, but you deleted the references that previously existed the article by adding your own. And that one was just another Wikipedia page, which is not considered a valid reference because Wikipedia itself is not a publisher of information let alone a reliable one. The reference also didn't back up the claims you were writing. But I don't blame you for that; that article needs a lot of work, seeing that it contains references to probably made-up things such as "the Winston and Mikey Club", and I could see how it may appear you were just adding more information similar to what was already there. However, you should know that you really cannot ever find a way to legitimately write something like Robert LaFollette is remembered fondly in some parts of the District and Joe McCarthy is equally lionized in others or a two-way socioeconomic class split informs the life of the school, because that's just an opinion. —Soap— 17:49, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Due to recent attacks this anti-"fixed position" filter, which prevents people from adding code that completely covers the page, has been extended even to userspace. I apologize for the disruption. There was a hit just 2 days ago, and in fact he went on to blank the false positives page as well, so I don't really think the extended conditions can be peeled back just yet, but Ive added an exemption for users modifying their own userpage. —Soap— 10:50, 6 September 2010 (UTC)

And according to [7] (use your browser's "Find" function to search for "CCK" to get to the point) he got in trouble with German law enforcement over taxes as well and then claimed harassment and persecution. I wonder whether this belongs here as well? Before you add anything to the page, you should make sure that what you're writing is verified by independent reliable sources (e.g. not the theatre's own website) describing the theater and its history. We cannot simply trust you based on the fact that you're related to its founder. If you cannot find any such resources, then unfortunately you really can't be adding information to the page. It looks to me like a simple external link at the bottom of the page would be more appropriate, if this information is on the theater's website somewhere. (I'd check, but I can't seem to get the site to load at all.) However, the reason the edit filter was stopping you is not due to any of that issue: it was because you were capitalizing the titles of all the plays and such. —Soap— 10:28, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

For the sake of simplicity, the sandbox is not exempted from most filters (it would have to be exempted individually for each one, there's no "whitelist" page function). If there is a need to make a certain edit on the sandbox for a reason such as testing a template, it can often be done in userspace, but other than that, random test edits are not generally perceived as "necessary" in a way that would grant them exemptions. —Soap— 16:24, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

It's a special filter that applies only to ANI and a few other pages. I'll turn it off for now, but I or someone else will probably add it back later for the sake of the non-ANI pages on the list. —Soap— 18:32, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

This filter will not stop you from linking to your website, it is only warning you that it is discouraged (especially so when the site has you offering to do web design work for money), and that your account may be blocked if you continue to add them where not needed. Primary focus should be on whether the external links are necessary for understanding of the subject. —Soap— 16:51, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
Its a bit more than a warning, see: We are sorry, your edit can not be completed at this time. Your recent edits have repeatedly triggered the edit filter. To prevent users from repeatedly attempting to make unconstructive edits, your edit has been disallowed. If this is not your intention, we apologize for the inconvenience but please report this error and try your edit again later.
There is almost no info on the web about what Franz's artwork looks like, and one link on his page doesnt even work. I'm a fan of the genre, and graphic work is well regarded by the fanbase. My site is a gallery of my work, both for hire and for simply the sake of art, which this entry is. The page I linked to is my rendering of Franz's drawing and was not paid work. So can I include the link or not?
- I would say that you probably should not do it, but it's not my decision, I can only give advice. If you think it's necessary to see the illustrations for readers to understand the article, then you can add the links ... the filter was stopping you before because it detected too many attempts to add the links in a certain number of minutes, which is a separate filter from the one that looks at the URL itself, and it can't tell the difference between "preview and save" and just "preview". —Soap— 18:47, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Generally you should bring up such large changes (in this case rewriting the whole article) on the talk page before making them, though if you're sure your edits are improvements, the edit filter will not stop you (though it does tag the edit as "large deletion" because it is one). ClueBot is not related to the edit filter although the edit filter will also tag any edit that un-does one of its edits. —Soap— 00:22, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Please check to be sure you're not using the Skype Toolbar ... I've yet to see this filter trigger on someone who wasn't using it. Previous discussions have turned up evidence that the plugin keeps on running even when it's not activated, and must be actually uninstalled. —Soap— 21:20, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

If you believe you have found a copyright violation on Wikipedia, you can either email info-en-cwikimedia.org or start a new discussion on Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems (though the email method is preferable especially if the text youre finding is not available online for quick verification.)—Soap— 21:10, 14 September 2010 (UTC) See Wikipedia:Copyright violations. —Soap— 21:10, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

The filter was set off because of the all-caps writing you used for the names of the plays and other things. However that kind of list is better suited for an external link rather than the main text of the article. And please note that an article created without reliable references will be deleted regardless of its content ... you did put one link near the bottom, but it doesn't seem to mention the subject of the article. I cannot find any evidence of notability and suspect that this article would be deleted if it were created. —Soap— 09:50, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
