Operator: Alai
Automatic or Manually Assisted: manually run, edits automatically
Programming Language(s): Python (pywikipedia framework)
Function Summary: Populate "category missing" maintenance categories from database dumps.
Edit period(s) (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): Intermittent, manually run on an as-needed/as-identified basis.
Edit rate requested: 6 edits per minute
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): yes
Function Details: Populating of "missing category" maintenance categories such as Category:Uncategorised albums, from lists generated from offline database dumps. (See for example, User:Alai/uncat-albums, album-stubs lacking any (other) album categories.) To use the pywikipedia framework to add the category, while double-checking for categories added more recently than the db dump to avoid "false positives". Sample/test edit: [1]. Currently this just uses replace.py to do this: it might be slightly more elegant to do a code-merge with category.py, which I'll look at doing in due course. I suggest using the above list (or if preferred, part thereof) as a "trial run", given that a request specifically for that at Wikipedia:ALBUM is what inspired this task. Subsequent runs would be done on the basis of either existing similar maintenance categories, such as Category:Year of birth missing, or creating additional same in co-ordination with wikiprojects expressing an interest in emptying same. Discussion
[edit]- What did you think of my idea about creating artist categories for existing artists by album categories which don't already have one? --kingboyk 18:19, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- I responded to that at the original WPJ discussion. In brief, I'm not a big fan of the idea, and it's certainly not something I'd propose to tackle myself, sorry. Alai 05:14, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- OK. Anyway, I'm in favour of a trial run. Anyone else want to comment? --kingboyk 16:09, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Approved for trial. Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. Run a test of 50 edits to be completed within 1 week. Post the results here when finished. -- RM 12:56, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Done, starting with this, and finishing with this. Lots more left to do... Alai 23:14, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
- Since there were no comments here during the week after the trial, and no adverse comments elsewhere (there was one approving-sounding response at the wikiproject), I'm going to assume this is OK for further such edits. Alai 13:47, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Approved. This bot was approved and a bot flag already given by Essjay. As such, this request is formally approved and closed. -- RM 18:15, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
