Wamiqa Gabbi (born 29 September 1993) is an Indian actress who predominantly appears in Punjabi and Hindi films and series. She made her screen debut with a minor role in the Hindi film Jab We Met (2007). She had success as a leading lady in Punjabi films such as Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 (2013), Ishq Brandy (2014), Godha (2017), Nikka Zaildar 2 (2017), Parahuna (2018), and Nikka Zaildar 3 (2019). Gabbi has since starred in the Hindi series Modern Love: Mumbai (2022), Jubilee (2023), and Charlie Chopra & The Mystery Of Solang Valley (2023), and film Khufiya (2023).
Early life and education
[edit]Gabbi was born in a Punjabi family in Chandigarh on 29 September 1993.[1][2][3] Her father Govardhan Gabbi is an author and writes in Hindi and Punjabi languages, who uses Gabbi as a pseudonym.[4][5]
Gabbi did her schooling at St. Xavier's School, Chandigarh. She then completed her degree in Arts from DAV College, Chandigarh.[6]
Career
[edit]She is a trained Kathak dancer. Her big break came with the Punjabi film with Yo Yo Honey Singh and Amrinder Gill, Tu Mera 22 Mai Tera 22. She went on to star in two other Punjabi films Ishq Brandy and Ishq Haazir Hai as a co-star to actor Diljit Dosanjh.
She gave her first female lead role as Tanisha in Sixteen. She starred as the lead actress in the Telugu film, Bhale Manchi Roju as the female lead.
Gabbi starred as the female lead in a Tamil film, Maalai Nerathu Mayakkam (2016).[7] She was the female lead in the Malayalam film, Godha, alongside Tovino Thomas.[8] In March 2017, Wamiqa signed onto a new Tamil film, Iravaakaalam, directed by Ashwin Saravanan, also starring Sshivada and S. J. Surya.[9] Wamiqa played the lead role in 9, also starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mamta Mohandas.[10] Wamiqa starred as the female lead opposite Ishaan Khattar in the short film, Fursat, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, which released in early 2023.[11] She was cast in Bharadwaj's Khufiya, which was released in October the same year on Netflix.[12] She also played Niloufer in the Amazon original series, Jubilee, which also released in April 2023.[13]
