Now for the #time:z argument is it possible to have a complex argument, it looks like it will wink out at the end of the year, but come back on at the beginning of the year (I am not sure if you have finished yet, so please just ignore me if that is the case)

Yes, that part '{{#time:z}}' is day of the year, and is zero when it is 1st January. It is possible to make any change, but we have to make it more complex—this simple currently used method would works only if we want to finish it at the end of year! --Z 11:12, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

University of Chittagong

Thes ection you keep changing names "three university departments...". Since these are department names, you cannot change them without verifying that that is indeed the name of the department.

In fact, "Farsi" is another name for the language in English. I hear this name far more often in English than "Persian", and even overheard it used as a language name today at the grocery store. But I'm not trying "to eliminate a word from English", but correcting a wrong word. I'm agree with that part which people in "grocery store" and/or 10 year old grade school kids may don't know what Persian means, but I believe this is an encyclopedia and we should rely on academic sources (p. 152, in Persian). --Z 12:39, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

If you do not understand the reason for a reversion, especially when it is stated for you, please ask. Do not revert simply because you don't understand, especially when you've been informed of this problem multiple times (see notices above on your talk page).

As before, "Farsi" is also an English name for the language also called "Persian". And note that the native name is not "Farsi" because that language is not written in Latin characters. It is pronounced much the same, but it is not the same. So, your "Deutsch" example is not appropriate, and in fact the form of German spoken in parts of the eastern US is called "Pennsylvania Dutch", from a corruption of "Deutsch". The "Farsi" issue is more like "Irish"/"Gaelic" which are alternative names for the same language, where "Gaelic" derives from the native name and "Irish" derives from the name assigned to the culture. You need to ask first, instead of asking at the same time that you create an edit. Edit summaries are not for asking questions, they exist to describe the edit. If you have a question, go to a talk page and ask the question. Once you have the answer, then you can make an edit. The problem is that you are changing a language name that is correct in English. API login

Z, you know that login problem before ? I think I have found more of it. Only this time it effects the bot, rather than the operator. He was running normally and then just for no reason, that was it. Restarting worked.

Can you do as you did before, but have success this time ?

I was trying to say that the words were SPELLED as in Aramaic (e.g. KLB was read as "sag"); but obviously still in the Pahlavi script, which was remotely descended from the Aramaic script. Templates are very sensitive components of Wikipedia. When editing them, one must retain a higher standard of discretion than WP:BRD. However. even BRD does not have a second R in it. Help with language identification

Hello,

I was wondering if you could help identify a language. Ethnologue leaves Warduji of Afghanistan unclassified, but says that it might be a dialect of Persian. Well, that's fairly easy to test. Here is a recording reported to be a part of the Bible in Warduji. Are you able to understand it? If so, how close to Persian would you judge it to be?

I didn't understand it, except several random words, but it won't prove anything, because a dialect of a language is not necessarily [fully] understood by speakers of another dialect. Hi, the (strict) transliteration of the name is Mihrām-gušnasp, but regarding the Pahlavi spelling, unfortunately I couldn't find the name in Middle Persian texts (maybe it is only mentioned in Syriac works and not Middle Persian ones), gušnasp is spelled gwšnsp, but Mihrām is not recorded AFAICT, and we can't reconstruct the spelling exactly (it may be mtrʾm, myhrʾm, or mhrʾm). --Z 11:56, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

I think previous name which I found in Morony's book is a strict rendering of the Syriac form. A probably more accurate spelling is provided by Drijvers as Mihr-Mah-Gushnasp.--Kathovo talk 08:01, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I searched in Morony's book, but it has used "Mihrāmgushnasp".[1] Several other sources have also used "Mihrām"[2] including this article. Another Iranica article has used "Mihr Māh" to refer to the same person[3] (both articles are written by prominent scholars) I suggest you to mention both names, because both are mentioned in reliable sources. The name is apparently mentioned in Syriac texts only. IMHO, the "Mihrām" form is just a mistake in transcribing the Syriac spelling, which is probably m(y)hrmgwšnsp, which may be a representation of both mihrāmgušnasp and mihrmāgušnasp (Classical Syriac usually doesn't use aleph for ā AFAIK). "Mihr-Māh" is an actual Persian given name, but there's no such word as "Mihrām" or "Mihram" AFAICT. --Z 09:54, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

Certainly. Firstly, I've seen sources that consider him a "Persian", probably because was an inhabitant of Persia though, also the fact that he wrote his works in Persian suggests that he was either Persian-speaker or kinda Persianized (Persians themselves were writing their works in Arabic, it's quite odd that an Arabic-speaker write in Persian). Secondly, and more importantly, this article has been subject to edit wars because of his ethnicity in the lead, so I think it's a good idea to remove any information about ethnicity in the lead and put in the following sections instead. --Z 19:51, 8 February 2014 (UTC).

If any reliable sources calling him Persian exist then they need to be produced. If reliable sources calling him Persian are produced then I believe the ethnicity which would be (Arab & Persian, according to sources) should be removed from the lead and placed in the biography section. I don't think we can find such source that say he was an ethnic Persian, but although he apparently has Arab roots, he was actually more Persian than Arab: living in Persia, starting a revolt which has been described as 'expression of Persian "national" sentiments', writing in Persian and substituting Persian for Arabic as religious language of his followers for the first time in post-Islamic Persia. Secondly, when uploading pics the very first rule is to look. If the image doesn't fit the layout, and is non-essential, then it's not needed, unless it is exceptional in some way or shows an important aspect of the subject [ There will be a change-over soon. In attempting to clean up David Opoku, it was mentioned on his page that he had a stint with Sanat Mes Kerman F.C., albeit unsourced. Middle Persian Wordlist

D. N. MacKenzie in his dictionary identifies burj as the mo'arrab (معرب) or arabicized form of burg. It is largely accepted that burg is Indo-European not Semitic as it has cognates in various Germanic languages, Greek and possibly Sanskrit (burg, burgs, borough, purgos).

Iranica identifies seraj as the mo'arrab of Middle Persian čarāg probably from Parthian (Pahlavanik) Middle Persian where the two consonants č and g were replaced by s and j respectively to conform to the Arabic system.

A-sar and A-pad are both mentioned I believe in F. Joneidi's book on hozvaresh ideograms, and can be found in the MacKenzie dictionary. They have no Arabic etymology; Iranian etymology of the words and derivational elements (prefixes) is obvious.

Yes, with ganj, it appears (according to Iranica) to have been borrowed indirectly from Old not Middle Persian. We could replace this entry with Ar. ravaj (رواج) from Mid. Pers. ravāg, or sadeq (صادق) from sātak (sādeh in N. Pers.), or jund (جند) from gund, etc. Iranica lists many such words, and there is also a number of IE versus Arabic parallel wordlists in Joneidi's History of Iran V1 (p. 414-420).

Regarding siraj, that was actually what I meant, it is a (Middle) Iranian (like Parthian) word, but not Middle Persian. Actually, the Parthian form would have been *širāg if I'm not mistaken.

Actually I checked MacKenzie, and couldn't find A-pad/A-bad. A-sar ("endless") does exist, but the Arabic azal does not reflect Mid. Pers. asar, the sound changes are not regular, and if this is considered an Iranian borrowing, it doesn't look to be from Middle Persian itself. r was pronunced as l in earlier forms of Iranian (say "archaic" Middle Iranian), but the s -> z shift remains unexplained.

Do you have any source for rawaj being an Iranian borrowing? Sadiq is obviously not from sādag, again because the proposed sound change (a -> i) is not regular. jund is a known Mid Pers borrowing though, so are various adminstrative terms, two notable ones being diwan and daftar (these are certainly from Mid Pers itself, not from e.g. Parthian). --Z 23:52, 4 January 2016 (UTC)

This is mentioned on page 418 of Joneidi's "The Story of Iran", but the explanation of it is provided in his lecture notes:

From ravāk (in early Mid. Pers.) derives Arabic ravāq (رواق) 'place of passage'.

From ravāg (in late Mid. Pers.) derives Arabic ravāj (رواج) 'popularity' (Ar. tarvij, muravij, rāyej also come from here)

Ravāg is from the root rav (v. raftan) 'to go'; it is in MacKenzie. His explanation is consistent with k→q and g→j transformations typically used to adapt words to Arabic phonology, as pointed out in Iranica.

The s→z shift in a-sar to azal is not unusual. According to Dehkhoda dictionary, rozdāq (رزداق) 'village, district, province' is the Arabicized form of Mid. Pers. rōstāg (rostā روستا in N. Pers.). Another example is given in Iranica: razdaq (رَزدَق) 'row' from Mid. Pers. rastag. The s→z transformation is actually common in other languages too.

Yes that is true regarding siraj. But I think if a word is borrowed from Parthian it should not preclude it from the list because the article discusses the broader Middle Persian, which includes Parthian and Sassanid Persian. According to the source cited in the article: "the variations between Pahlavanik and Parsik, or northern and southern Pahlavi, were not sufficient to be called two distinct languages, or even dialects, and in any case both are branches of the same western Iranian language". The same definition of Middle Persian is provided by Joneidi (page 24, نامه پهلوانی: خودآموز زبان پهلوی)

Gund is a borrowing from which language? Aramaic? I thought that at least in Arabic, it was borrowed from Mid. Pers. Alright, perhaps we could use another term like tāj 'crown, tiara' or bōstān 'garden' which is definitely known to be Mid. Pers. Telementor ✍ 01:38, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

s - z is not regular in this case, this case is actually -VsV- -> -VzV-, the regular one you mentioned is -st- -> -zd- which is different. Actually we do have another related regular sound change, -Vs -> -Vz , in North Western Iranian, but it's also different. Regrding Parthian, as far as I know it is considered by late modern scholars as a separate language, Parthian language. jund and taj are from MP, but bustan may be from NP as well I think. --Z 17:59, 9 January 2016 (UTC)

Bōstān (bōy 'aroma, scent' + -stan place-name element) is listed as a MP term in MacKenzie^* and MP loanword in Iranica. I am not competent to argue on the sound changes, but I believe irregular sound changes, which do not follow the usual patterns, do occur sometimes. Like the n→l sound change in sandali (صندلی) 'chair' which is the Arabicized from of (early) NP čandani '[chair] made of sandalwood'; čandan meaning 'sandalwood' in MP is related to Sanskrit čandana. You can see p. 70 of F. Joneidi's hozvaresh dictionary (فرهنگ هزوارش های دبيره پهلوی), or چندن in Dehkhoda dictionary.

^* P.S. When possible, I would avoid MacKenzie's dictionary because he transliterates many terms with very new pronunciations (e.g. drot () as drod, hač as az, gās as gāh, etc.). Apparently his reasoning is that in some Manichaean writings the words appear that way. But many Manichaean writings were written long after the time of Mani (some even in the early post-Islamic era)... and hač, for instance, also appears as hač and ač in some other Manichaean writings which he simply ignores. I need some translation help

Edit summaries

Hello ZxxZxxZ,
There's something that's quite bothersome about your editorial pattern, and that's the fact that you basically never ever use edit summaries (see also WP:FIES). On itself this isn't a big deal, but a huge amount of your edits aren't "minor" edits and/or aren't edits that we could just label as "uncontroversial" (such as typos, etc). And it's going on like this for quite a long time as well. It makes other users constantly having to check what you have actually been doing (i.e. reviewing the actual edit), instead of just being able to at least read it off partially from your edit summary. If you were a new member, I'd be like, "fine, he'll learn", but you're a pretty long-standing member of the community, and apparantly even an admin on the fa.wiki, so giving a auto-generated warning would be kind of lame. Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM

• Magioladitis 2 happened, leading to further restrictions on Magioladitis (decision, summary).
• Betacommand 3 was proposed to be amended to lift the indefinite ban on Δ, but was unsuccessful (decision).
• A motion concerning Crosswiki issues (mostly concerning Wikidata) was passed (see discussion).

BAG

• Hersfold was removed from the BAG due to long term inactivity.

BRFAs

We currently have 6 open bot requests at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval, and could use your help processing!

Discussions

While there were no large-scale bot-related discussion in the past few months, you can check WP:BOTN and WT:BOTPOL (and their corresponding archives) for smaller issues that came up.

New things

• WP:BOTDICT, a dictionary of common bot-related terms (see discussion).
• 6 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion).
• The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey happened. Two bot-related proposal passed, #6 deploy Article Alerts to other languages and #10 Commons deletion notification bot, although other entries may affect bots as well.
• Category:Wikipedia bots and its subcategories has had some cleanup. Bot-related pages that were historically important but are no longer of interests can be found in Category:Wikipedia bots (historical)
• The edit summary limit has been increased to 1000 characters (see T6715). If a bot you operate relied on the old truncation limit (255 characters), please review/update your code, as overly long summaries can be disruptive/annoying. If you want to use extra characters to have more information in your edit summary, please do so intelligently.
• You will soon be able to ping users from the edit summary (see T188469). If you wish to use this feature in your bot, please do so intelligently.

Upcoming

• HTML Tidy will be phased out in June 2018, or possibly earlier. This may affect some bots (see FAQ).

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM

• Nothing particular important happened. Those who care already know, those who don't know wouldn't care. The curious can dig ARBCOM archives themselves.

BAG

• There were no changes in BAG membership since the last Bots Newsletter. Headbomb went from semi-active to active.
• In the last 3 months, only 3 BAG members have closed requests - help is needed with the backlog.

BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

• 24 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
• 5 open BRFAs and 3 BRFAs in need of BAG attention (see live status).
• 54 approved bot tasks since the start of 2018. Of note, Community Tech bot 5 (the #10 Wish on the 2017 Community Survey) was approved to notify users concerning problematic images and files from Wikimedia Commons.

• If you're a bot operator that can help with Tidy/Linter error cleanup (see discussion, discussion), please file a BRFA!

Discussions

These are some of the discussions that happened / are still happening since the last Bots Newsletter. Many are stale, but some are still active.

• Use of tags by bots – Exploring the use of a new 'bot' tag.
• Mass page moves – Bot policy question/clarification about mass moves.
• Creation of redirects – Bot policy question/clarification about the creation of redirects.
• Guidance on disruptive use of semi–automated tools? – Related to meatbots (see also MOS discussion, which resulted in small addition to MOS:VAR).
• Discussion concerning WP:BOTFLAG/WP:RC – A reminder that bots should use the bot flag when it makes sense to use it (see also VPT discussion and CREATEBOT update).
• Out of curiosity... (to all bot operators) – BotPasswords vs OAuth usage amongst bot operators.
• Introducing Toolhub – Toolhub is looking for feedback.

New things

• {{Automated tools}}, a new template linking to user-activated tools and scripts has been created. It can be used in articles previews, and can be placed on any non-mainspace page/template (e.g. {{Draft article}}) to provide convenient links to editors.
• AWB 5.10.0.0 is out, after nearly 20 months without updates. If you run an old version, you will be prompted to install the new version automatically. See the changelog for what's new. Note that the next version will require .NET Framework 4.5. Many thanks to Reedy and the AWB team.
• BotWatch, "a listing of editors that have made >2 edits per minute [without] a bot flag", is being developed by SQL (see discussion).
• Massive updates and improvements have been made to Citation bot in the past few months (see discussions, discussions, discussions). You can activate the bot here, amongst other methods.
• HTML Tidy has been phased out (see Tech News #28).
• {{Newbot}} has been reorganized a bit (diff). In particular, it links to previously approved BRFAs (see discussion).
• Wikipedia:Bots#See also has been reorganized a bit (diff).
• The bot dictionary has two new entries, context bot and context-sensitive edit.
• The bot request header has been updated to include better guidance (see discussion).
• The subcategories of Category:Wikipedia bot requests for approval have been sorted in a consistent manner to make past BRFAs easier to find.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
