NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018
ACTRIAL:
- WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.
Deletion tags
- Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.
Backlog drive:
- A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.
Editathons
- There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
Paid editing - new policy
- Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.
Subject-specific notability guidelines
- The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
Not English
- A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.
News
- Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
- The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Hello Zackmann08, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
- June backlog drive
Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.
- New technology, new rules
- New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
- Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
- Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
- Editathons
- Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
- The Signpost
- The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

Unspecified source/license for File:Agequake.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Agequake.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time after the next seven days. Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. Ronhjones (Talk) 18:12, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

navbox
Pls tag whole gategory of automobile timelines not individual templates, because all automobile lines uses same style -->Typ932 T·C 10:41, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Typ932: The purpose of tagging individual pages is that it places them in one tracking category. Once the page is converted, the template is removed and then the page is removed from the category. Placing a whole category in the tracking category defeats the point, because once a page is converted, it will still be in the tracking category because its parent category has been included in its entirety. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:17, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- Then tag all pages, not just 5 , pages will get very messy, best option is tell your problems to WP:Automobiles or some other cleaning group which is able to fix them all at same time, if there is problems the group can fix them -->Typ932 T·C 08:31, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Typ932: I was in the process of tagging them all... It takes time... I'm not just looking at the automobile category, I'm using a really complicated search to find ALL pages that use navboxes without {{navbox}}. I'm sorry that my tagging isn't the way you want it done, but I'm doing my best. Not sure how having a tiny page at the bottom of a template is such a difficult thing, but I'll just stay clear of the automobile pages and let someone else deal with those. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:30, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018
Hello Zackmann08, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.
- Project news
- The New Page Feed now has a new "Articles for Creation" option which will show drafts instead of articles in the feed, this shouldn't impact NPP activities and is part of the WMF's AfC Improvement Project.
- As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
- There are a number of coordination tasks for New Page Patrol that could use some help from experienced reviewers. See Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Coordination#Coordinator tasks for more info to see if you can help out.
- Other
- A new summary page of reliable sources has been created; Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources/Perennial sources, which summarizes existing RfCs or RSN discussions about regularly used sources.
- Moving to Draft and Page Mover
- Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
- If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
- Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
- The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
- The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.

Medals table
Thank you for converting the medal tables across multiple articles. However, for the Commonwealth Games, they should say CGF's at the bottom (not NOC's). Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 02:11, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
Show limit
Isn't that the point of this parameter is that the value take affect on another page? We put {{Medals table}} on 2018 Asian Games medal table but because the table is too large we display them (with transclusion) on 2018 Asian Games with only top 10 ranked nations. Hddty. (talk) 06:31, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- So the issue here is that we are both trying to solve the same problem but doing it in 2 different ways... My solution was to make the change on the parent page (I.E. 2018 Asian Games medal table) while your solution was to try and make it on the child page (I.E. 2018 Asian Games). Both approaches can work! The issue is that what you were suggesting, assigning the parameter on the parent page will NOT work. If you set the show limit to 10 on the parent page, then only 10 will show on that page. You need the show limit to ONLY be set on the child page. Does that make sense? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:47, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, I thought put a parameter on the child page wouldn't work. Hddty. (talk) 17:16, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Hddty.: as long as the parent page can accept the parameter, it will work. :-) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:17, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Hddty.: take a look at my implementation on 2016_Summer_Paralympics_medal_table#Medal_table.
| show_limit = {{{show_limit|<includeonly>10</includeonly>}}}
. While this is a bit more complicated, it has some great benefits. When you want to include the table on another page such as 2016 Summer Paralympics, you simply can call{{:2016 Summer Paralympics medal table}}
and it will default to a show limit of 10. Without the includeonly bit, you would be forced to supply a parameter or the default would be to show everything. However, if you want to change that limit to something else, you can at the time you call it! So if on 2016 Summer Paralympics you did{{:2016 Summer Paralympics medal table|show_limit = 15}}
, then 15 records would be shown. Does that make sense? --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:14, 21 September 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject banner wrapper templates
Hi Zackmann08
I have declined[1] your speedy deletion requests for over 20 WikiProject banner templates. This is for the reasons I set out in my opposes at WP:Templates for discussion/Log/2018_September_22#Template:WikiProject_Djibouti and at WP:Templates for discussion/Log/2018_September_21#Template:WikiProject_Malawi.
In all, between speedies and TFD you nominated about 40 such templates for deletion. Before launching into a process of mass deletion nominations, it would have been better for you to discuss why there are so many WikiProject wrapper templates in Category:WikiProject banner wrapper templates, e.g. at the WP:Village pump, where many editors could have explained the issues. It appears that you are not familiar with how WikiPriject Banners are applied and maintained, or how e.g. WP:AWB has a plugin (User:Kingbotk/Plugin) which facilitates handling all the variants. I am sure you acted in good faith, and I can see that if you haven't done much bulk work on project banner maintenance before then you may have had no reason to ever know this ... but whenever you encounter what appears to be a widespread problem, then the best first step is to follow WP:MULTI and open a centralised discussion to see if this is simply an overlooked problem, or if there are issues you have missed which may contra-indicate deletion.
A centralised discussion before the flurry of deletion nominations could have saved a lot of work for you and others. WP:BEFORE is written about AFD, but the same broad principle of prior checking applies to other forms of deletion.
Hope this helps, --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 06:16, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: not much I can say here except to own up to an WP:EPICFAIL... :-( Thanks for your explanation. I actually did do WP:BEFORE but neglected to realize that these templates were being replaced by bots. I figured that since the templates had no transclusions they clearly weren't used. Anyway, I withdraw my nominations and appreciate your comments. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:58, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for being so nice about it. We all misread the situation sometimes, and I have had my own WP:EPICFAILs.
- The mark of a good editor is that they acknowledge the oversight and clean up. Thanks for being one of the good guys.
- Best wishes, --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:30, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: I learned long ago it is better to step up and admit when you've screwed up. :-p --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:36, 22 September 2018 (UTC)
Minor request
Can you edit the template based on edit request from medals table talk page:
- 1. Sort the table by country name WITHOUT clicking the top of the column. On the example below, American Samoa should be listed first alphabetically.
Rank | Nation | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | American Samoa (ASA) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Aruba (ARU) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
Totals (2 entries) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
- 2. "Nations" in the Totals cell should be in lower-case per MOS.
Hddty. (talk) 05:50, 23 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Hddty.: took care of the 2nd one. The 1st one is not trivial. I'm honestly not sure if it is even possible. That information isn't calculated until once the template is already rendered on the page so not sure how to achieve that. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 08:36, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Medal tables
Hi! It's seems you made lots of errors at IAAF_World_Championships_in_Athletics#All-time_medal_table - three nations went missing (the last place was 92, now is 89. Also the header should not be NOC (nat. olympic commitee) but nation, world championship is not Olympics. I'm not following your edits, but this is a page i'm following. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 18:36, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Pelmeen10: thanks for the message. So this is a new template that we are rolling out. There are a few issues with it of course. The default for the nation/team column is NOC, that can easily be changed by adding a single param. I just fixed that. As for nations going missing, I am fairly confident that none of the nations went away. What I think is happening is that the old table didn't have the ranks set properly. This table automatically calculates the rank. So if you change the number of medals that 1 country has, all of the ranks will update to reflect that. My guess is that with the old table, at some point something was updated in one place but not the other. You are more than welcome to check my work though! If you find that something is wrong, please let me know and I will address it! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:44, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- Soviet Union, East Germany and Czechoslovakia are missing. They were on the medal table before. Are you excluding former countries? I'm pretty sure these countries are on every medal table (that had competition the year the countries existed, because they were pretty big and successful). --Pelmeen10 (talk) 18:51, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Pelmeen10: son of a gun. You're 100% right. That was NOT intentional. I'm using a script to help me convert these massive tables. I copy the table text into my program and it does some crazy find-replace magic with Regular expressions. The fact that those 3 countries were in italics is what broke it. I will fix that right now. GREAT catch!!! Thank you! --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:57, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- Good to know. So you unfortunately need to redo your previous work I guess... I actually think "Nation" instead of "NOC" by default is better. Maybe there's something that can be done with the Modul to automatically distinguish Olympic articles? --Pelmeen10 (talk) 19:04, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Pelmeen10: didn't have to redo anything, just fixed those 3. It is already taken care of. :-) --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:06, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

@Pelmeen10: You're killing me smalls.... :-p --19:16, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
- So, I'm randomly checking your edits, Judo at the 2000 Summer Olympics - Australia went missing there. Also one where you reverted your edit it left out TPE (Chinese Taipei). Can you also exclude the ANA rank here?-You can check from history how it was. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 19:24, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

- I believe that I fixed the Antigua and Barbuda problem with this edit. Revert me if I got it wrong. – Jonesey95 (talk) 07:40, 24 September 2018 (UTC)
- For Netherlands Antilles, the IOC code is AHO, but the ISO code (and the FIFA code) is ANT.
- Template:Country data ANT redirects to Netherlands Antilles. Zackmann08, your table replacement script may need to be adjusted, or the module may need to call the flags in a different way to ensure that IOC codes are used to match flags, not FIFA or ISO codes. I do not envy you your journey through this morass. See Template talk:Country alias for more.

2012 IPC Athletics European Championships
Your recent editing history at 2012 IPC Athletics European Championships shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.
Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Non-admin closure
I don't follow the XfD boards much, so I was unfamiliar with the term "non-admin closure". On that page, I found WP:NACINV, which might interest you. I think that your decision was valid, but I can imagine some editors having concerns about process, because that's how some people are. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:41, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Template editor
You've nominated Template:Bku for merging, but in doing so, also added the deletion nomination text to Template:N/a. Can you please clarify what pages you're intending to merge together and fix any remaining errant TfD notices on the individual template pages. This looks, initially, to be quite a serious failure to properly inspect changes made to templates which are protected with Template Editor level protection, but I would need to hear from you what your intention was and a fuller explanation before deciding on whether any further action is warranted. Nick (talk) 11:56, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Nick: allow me to explain... I was attempting to start a discussion about {{Bku}}. I used WP:TWINKLE to nominate the template and when I got to the 'template to merge' field in the popup I simple put N/A because it wasn't a merge I was considering, but a discussion that I wanted to start. What I failed to realized is that this went and tagged the template {{N/a}} as well. This was obviously an error on my part and I do apologize for the mistake. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:57, 28 September 2018 (UTC)
Infoboxes
Hi I saw you removed the "needs an infobox" tag from Oli Pettigrew. I undid this as I presumed it was a semi-automatic edit seeing that there was an empty infobox with just his name and nothing else. As per MOS:IBX they are supposed to summarise the key features. Even if technically there was an infobox it did not serve that purpose which is why I added the tag again as it was useful. I see that you expanded the infobox thanks for that. Dom from Paris (talk) 06:29, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Domdeparis: fair enough. I'd say just remove the infobox if all it has is a name, but it is better now either way. Thanks for the note! --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 06:32, 29 September 2018 (UTC)
- You're welcome and useful for me because I now know this tag exists (first time I've noticed it). I'm quite a big fan of infoboxes and can't quite get my head around why there are so many editors that are so violently opposed to them. To me it seems to be the most useful and important difference between Wikipedia and traditional encyclopedias. Cheers. Dom from Paris (talk) 06:39, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

HI Zackmann08 -- I mistakenly added a sock puppet
HI Thanks for opening that case, I didn't understand why I couldn't upload the logo to the company page I was creating and thought there was something wrong with my wiki commons username.
I get little lost in the wikipedia structure, and am still learning my way around.
The only username I need here is the one I've been using for years which should be marksingley but now I accidentally created a new one markssingley. It was an accident, and I'd like to delete it and attribute the inmed pharmaceuticals work I just added to the correct user.
I need to locate how to delete the new one.
Thanks for starting the case, I didn't know how to handle it.
Marksingley (talk) 18:48, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Marksingley: thank you for the note. I have added a comment to the investigation that this appears to have been an honest mistake. Now, regarding Inmed Pharmaceuticals are you related to the company in any way? Please also note that the page is currently in clear violation of WP:COPYVIO. See the report. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:52, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Red Bull Art of Motion, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Alfred Scott (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi! The edit that you made earlier shown here may not appear in the table that AnomieBOT updates on CAT:EDITREQ, but it is causing the Template:Request_edit/testcases page to show up on other custom made tables as an active edit request. Pre-1923 book covers
Anything with a LibriVox edition will have a Public Domain book cover available. Diff. Probably also true for Project Gutenberg and in many cases Internet Archive. Basically anything pre-1923 is shaky for claiming a Fair Use cover as in most cases a PD cover can be obtained. -- GreenC 03:23, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

Tangle Lakes infobox
Not sure if you didn’t see my edit summary when I reverted you [4] or if you are deliberately disregarding it, so I guess we need to discuss this. Here are the salient points as I see them:
- Yes, technically the article does have an infobox
- The article actually covers two subjects, the lakes themselves, and the surrounding archeological district
- The infobox is clearly only about the archeological district
- The request for an infobox is tied to the “WikiProject Lakes” banner so it seems evident that it is a request for a second infobox on the lakes themselves, the primary topic of the article.
Therefore, I feel it is appropriate for the tag to remain unless and until an infobox on the lakes is present. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:01, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
- Having taken a look at your recent edits I have to ask: are you using some sort of automated process to remove these requests? You seem to be editing impossibly fast. 36 identical removals on seperate pages in the space of less than three minutes, with a few edits to update your counters thrown in as well... Beeblebrox (talk) 21:19, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
- Well I added an Infobox, which took a fraction of the time it took to post the message... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 00:27, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
- Well, since you kept removing the request for one I assumed you had some actual reason for doing so, but it’s now fairly clear you were just robotically removing the requests using a script or bot or something but not noting as much in your edit summaries. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:40, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
- Well I added an Infobox, which took a fraction of the time it took to post the message... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 00:27, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Beeblebrox (talk) 21:19, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
I would still like an answer to my question as to how you were making these edits. Adding an infobox with two fields filled in doesn’t really satisfy my concern here, in particualr if what you were doing is in compliance with WP:CONTEXTBOT as it seems like you were in fact using some kind fo automation and this was a false positive, in particular the second time, when any person paying attention should’ve noticed they had editied the page before and been reverted. Beeblebrox (talk) 21:05, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Beeblebrox: Ok first of all
Well I added an Infobox, which took a fraction of the time it took to post the message
... Could I have sounded like more of a jerk? Possibly, but still... that was pretty pathetic on my part. Another reminder to me that I should never post on talk pages when I'm already in a bad mood. So before anything else, let me apologize for being a jerk. No excuse. - Now, regarding my editing, I was using a custom built semi-automated process similar to WP:AWB and was reviewing all edits. Regarding the use of the infobox on that page, I didn't agree with your conclusion but I should have discussed it with you rather than just reverting it again. That is on me and I do apologize. The way I saw it, lake chains or sets of lakes do not get a lake infobox (Great Lakes for example), only individual lakes. But as I said, I should not have just re-done the edit. I should have posted a message and discussed it. That is my mistake and I own that.

- Thank you very much for this reply, I appreciate your willingness to reconsider your approach to this and will gladly drop the matter. (by the way I have asked around if there is a more appropriate infobox for a series of lakes, but haven’t gotten anywhere, so it probably doesn’t exist) Beeblebrox (talk) 21:28, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello Zackmann08. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Alison Thornton, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: playing a major named role in a notable show indicates significance. Thank you. SoWhy 07:52, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Infobox school athletics
Hi Zack, do you plan on replacing the city and state parameters in every article that uses Template:Infobox school athletics or just leave it be? If you're just leaving it be, I am going to revert your edit until all articles can be switched. There are currently over 650 articles that are now missing the "city, state" from their infoboxes because of your edit. I've already gone through nearly 100 articles and will probably go through more over the next couple of days if this isn't fixed. Another suggestion would be to leave the "location" field but re-add the city and state fields until this issue can be fixed. Thanks, Corky 23:55, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Corkythehornetfan: I'm confused... The deprecation category was setup such that any page with those 2 parameters should have been categorized in the category. Since the category was empty, I thought it was safe to remove it. If that is not the case, then by all means, please revert my edit. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:57, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
- You removed “city” and “state” in your edit, but kept “province”. What exactly are you trying to remove? I’m just as confused as you are. I’m not opposed to just having a “location” field, and I’ll work on converting the remaining 650+ to the location field. Corky 00:38, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Corkythehornetfan: all I was trying to do was remove parameters which were deprecated. The category said that hose parameters were deprecated and the category was empty. If I was wrong, by all means revert! --04:14, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
- The deprecated parameter test was non-functional, so the category was empty even though the parameters were still present in articles. I have restored the test and cleaned it up a bit. It was a mess. It's not clear to me why those parameters were deprecated in the first place; there is an unanswered question about it on the template's talk page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:43, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

@Czar, Ollieinc, and Jonesey95: just FYI I have a series of scripts that I'm using to upload these images. If you are interested in helping I setup a page: User:Zackmann08/books. If you add a line there that is in the format <article_title>@!@<image_url>
I can drop it into my script and it will upload the image, tag it with the proper license and links to the article and author, tag its talk page and insert the image into the article all in one go. All I need is the url for the image and the title of the article. No pressure at all, but if you are interested in helping... :-) --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:30, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

Preview
Hey, you might want to start using Preview on these infobox edits... after fixing the broken formatting at Go Do, I took a quick look at your recent edits and found a similar error at Gold (The Moody Blues album), both of which would be really evident if using Preview. Just a heads-up. Thanks, Jessicapierce (talk) 17:21, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
- Z – I think the problem with Go Do was that before your edit, the page was in Category:Music infoboxes with Module:String errors. Those errors prevent substitution in some way that I haven't looked into. Unless you're going to fix the cause of the string errors, you should avoid substing those infoboxen.
- The problem with Gold appears to be that you left out the first pipe before
|name=
. Use preview, dude, and look at the page after you save it. Slow down. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:26, 15 October 2018 (UTC)
New image added for Into the Storm (Anderson novel)
Thanks you for adding a image for the Taylor Anderson novel Into the Storm (Anderson novel) on 23:55, 6 October 2018. Are you using a Python script to capture dozens of book cover images per minute? What method are you using to locate the source images?
Are you aware that the image File:Into the Storm (Anderson novel).jpg is the cover of a pirated edition that is usually found on BitTorrent? It appears to be a generic image. You can compare that image with that at the publisher page. This is the only flaw that I have noticed. Other than that, great job in helping to upload book cover images for articles needing images. 50.195.200.161 (talk) 02:48, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

Deprecated parameters
Concerning this revert: [5].
As far as I can see, the parameters still work, so they are still supported. If you still wish to remove them, it is your responsibility to do that without damaging the chronology/succession fields. (I think there must be a way to do that properly. If there isn't a way, then the new template is flawed and should be corrected.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 17:03, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Moscow Connection: thanks for the message. So I didn't deprecate the parameters... I'm just working on converting the deprecations. I think the issue here is that that page isn't using the parameters the way they are intended to be used in the first place. That seems to be why it isn't 'converting' properly. I.E. why are there 2 albums listed for "this album"? Per the documentation on Template:Infobox album that parameter should contain This album for the chronology, bold and italic. The example given is
'''''Nirvana''''' <br /> (2002)
. Perhaps you can help shed some light? Might be worth bringing this example up on the talk page of the template itself. If you feel strongly that this warrants further discussion, I'd be ok with reverting that change until a consensus is reached about how to move forward. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:09, 18 October 2018 (UTC)- The two albums were released simultaneously. The template's documentation was obviously written by its new author(s) who obviously didn't think of this particular case. Since the template is not an end in itself, but rather a means to provide some basic information about the album and to allow the reader to navigate between the band's albums, I believe we should use the parameters that allow that and not the ones that hide the other album and lead to a wrong chronology. --Moscow Connection (talk) 17:39, 18 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Moscow Connection: well I don't think it is fair to assume that the documentation was
obviously written by its new author(s) who obviously didn't think of this particular case.
. I've looked at over 5,000 of these pages and this is the first time I have ever seen a case like this. I would recommend starting a thread on the talk page of the template to discuss how to handle this situation. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:42, 18 October 2018 (UTC)- Okay, I'll do that later, I'll start a thread on the talk page of template.
Actually I've long known about this problem and I planned to alert the author(s) about it, but I never got to it. I continue to use the old parameters, that's all.
(I will start the thread later, I'm a bit busy now.) --Moscow Connection (talk) 17:49, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Where did all the content go
With this edit you made the content from the studio, genre and producers parameters disappear because {{flatlist}} doesn't use pipes to separate the values. I fixed it by removing the pipes. If you were to convert it to hlist, you would need to remove the asterisks, so either way, there was work to do.
Speaking of work to do, thanks for the work you've done on updating the parameters. It will be good when the old ones are finally deprecated. 18:51, 18 October 2018 (UTC)

Since you did this edit the edit counter on my user page no longer works (instead I get en error message "Lua error in Module:User_contrib at line 25: attempt to compare nil with number.")

Hi. Not sure what you did at Template:User contrib (I don't know much about Lua modules), but the colour of the template on my user page has changed. Is Module:User contrib different to what Template:User contrib used to be? 72 (talk) 14:40, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- @72: yes, the color scheme was redone. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:29, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- Any chance of letting me know what the original colour was and how to get that back? These pages are difficult to understand if you're unfamiliar with this part of the encyclopaedia. 72 (talk) 17:15, 19 October 2018 (UTC)
- @72: I took the liberty of updating User:72/~. PLEASE revert my change if you don't like it. I usually refrain from making edits to user's custom pages, but I think that will be exactly what you need. This link contains the old color schemes... Also, if you don't like the new color schemes or have comments about them please leave a message on the talk page (Template talk:User contrib). I gather from your message you don't know much about Lua. I'm happy to help you out if you are interested. :-) --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:23, 19 October 2018 (UTC)

Template:Infobox album
Hi there! I see you're using a script to substitute and update Template:Infobox album. Would there be any way to alter the script to not include the parameter "venue" if the infobox is already set to "studio" or "album"? The template's documentation states, in bold, that this parameter is explicitly for live albums, and realistically there are few exceptions for studio albums being recorded in venues or live settings. Most of the time this parameter is not filled in anyway and left there or removed in cleanup sessions by other editors. Ss112 05:47, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Ss112: so I'm not really using a "script"... All I'm doing is using the template that is currently built to be substituted. The syntax of that template is WAY beyond me... I have no objection to what you are suggesting, but I'm not really in a place to perform it. I would ask that you put a comment on the talk page for the template. I'm sure one of the other users who built the template can make that happen. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:52, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
- I was thinking of doing that anyway, so I will. However, if you're not using a script, how are you making so many edits in a minute and finding all the articles that use Template:Infobox album? I really don't know the ins and outs of scripts or add-ons or many tools really, I don't use any myself. Ss112 05:55, 20 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Ss112: take a look at petscan and all I'm doing is substituting the template. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:57, 20 October 2018 (UTC)

Location parameter as default map caption in Infobox Valley
Hi, Zackmann. I notice that you removed the location as the default map caption in {{Infobox valley}}. This behavior is used in other infoboxes, such as {{Infobox mountain}}. This gives a useful caption in case an editor forgets to label the map. May I restore the behavior? —hike395 (talk) 19:11, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

- Sure, I can help. Do you have an AWB .xml file? —hike395 (talk) 19:16, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Hike395: I wish. Been doing it all manually so far. When it comes time to do the rivers, will definitely build an XML. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:51, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- OK, I'm slowly constructing an AWB script. I know from my conversion of {{Geobox|Range}} to {{Infobox mountain range}} that some changes in the infobox are required. I'm adding those changes now. —hike395 (talk) 19:55, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Hike395: one tip... There are less than 100 pages left in Valley. Might be better use of time to build an AWB for Category:Geobox usage tracking for region type (0) which needs to be converted to {{Infobox region}}. Just a thought. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:58, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- I find that AWB could be a time saver in the end: it helps me hack on the infobox, also. Region is a whole 'nother can of worms, will look at that separately. —hike395 (talk) 20:03, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Hike395: sounds good! Once you get that XML file done, even if you do all the edits, I'd love to look at it. I'm trying to learn AWB XML a bit better so would love to see what you come up with! --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:09, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- Would it be possible for you to work alphabetically backwards? I'm pushing through forward alphabetically, building the AWB and modifying the infobox going forward, and as you edit, it's breaking my workflow. Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 20:48, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

- Having you start at Z would be perfectly ok. In fact, you may get to A before I get to Z, which would be quite a coup against AWB :-). —hike395 (talk) 21:21, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Hike395: that's why I was thinking it might be better for you to start with region instead... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:23, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- sigh These geoboxes are overly-complex. Your approach is correct --- AWB won't work, we need to manually simplify and convert them. I can start on A, you can start on Z. —hike395 (talk) 21:50, 21 October 2018 (UTC)

I added a few more subcategories to Category:Geobox usage tracking. They will take some time to populate, but it is great to slowly be knocking these out. Orphaned fair use album covers
I wanted to let you know that I have come across ten edits when you substituted Infobox album that messed up the infobox and orphaned the fair use album covers found in the infobox. [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14] and [15]. Aspects (talk) 04:59, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

- @Aspects and Jonesey95: Yup. Those were all edits from when I first started. Fixing deprecated parameters
Hi Zachmann08, it appears some oddities are occurring when you fix the deprecated parameters of the {{Infobox album}} when the original infobox entries contain a hard return or maybe a line break. As an example, here's a diff from the article Hilary Duff (album). As you can see, the way the genre had been entered caused the error. All the album articles with a similar issue after you edited them are showing up in Category:Pages using infobox album with unknown parameters. I'm not asking you to fix them (I did a few), just want to make you aware of it. Thanks. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 06:00, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- This is strange. The template (in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, at least) had unsupported parameters before the substitution, but it was not appearing in the category. I wonder if the unknown parameter check is not operating on un-substed templates. That would be something to fix, but I was unable to fix it in the sandbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:34, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars: thank you for making me aware of this. It IS my responsibility to fix these and I will get them done. Thanks!! --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:42, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

I don’t understand why on Earth you’ve undone my edits, one was readding something, and then adding the citation that it was removed for lacking, the other edit was putting a better photo as the one in the infobox, and then moving that photo to a lower part of the article so that it wasn’t lost
- @KingSepron: first, please remember to always sign your posts when you are leaving comments on a talk page. Second, you have been warned MANY times, including comments from Redrose64, about posting images without proper licensing yet you have continued to do so without any attempts to address the issue. Third, your edits broke the page. You need to WP:PREVIEW your edits to understand what you are changing. Hope that helps. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:07, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for responding user:Zackmann08 I understand what happened with the images, it won’t happen again. I’m on mobile so the fact that the page didn’t look ‘broken’ might be down to that. Anyway can i readd the citation to the page? On top of that, you’ve claimed I’ve been disruptive on NGC 22, could you explain as I haven’t got into an ‘editing war’ with anyone on this page.
- @KingSepron: Again you need to WP:SIGN your posts! I didn't say you had been in an editing war. I said you were being disruptive. Your edits are causing a lot of issues that are breaking the pages. Hello Zackmann08. Thanks for your major improvement on this article! The submitter of the draft, Peterjharnik, had contacted me off Wikipedia and I tried to show him how to organize his material. I just now asked him if he has a photograph from the early 70's that might be added as an image. Per {{Copying within Wikipedia}}, what would you think of putting a {{Copied}} on the talk page with a link to the draft? An alternative might be an edit summary with a link. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 21:19, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- @EdJohnston: I don't have much experience with drafts. I kinda of felt like the edit history isn't all that relevant in this case but will defer to you to do what you think is best! --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:01, 24 October 2018 (UTC)
- I looked at the {{Copied}} template some more, and decided that an edit summary would be sufficient. So I just did a null edit here on Environmental Action. Otherwise we would have no indication in the surviving history of Environmental Action that Peterjharnik wrote any of it. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 23:36, 24 October 2018 (UTC)

You repetitively say your reasoning is that I have not cited my sources. That's because I am the source. I am a family member of the subject of this page and I work for him. My Purpose is not self-promotion; Rather ensuring that the 100% correct information is being represented. Unfortunately in previous versions of the page, the information is false. Thank you for your interest and concern however, by repeatedly reverting the page your spreading false information.
Thank you, MandolinRyan

@Frietjes: I want to be clear, I was NOT trying to argue with you. I can tell I bug you at times, particularly when I go too fast and make stupid mistakes. This is something I really am working on. Honestly I really look up to you and admire your work. I looked at the link you sent (Wikipedia:Template editor#Use) and just have a different interpretation. The two bullet points that are under Changes that should be made ONLY after substantial discussion don't seem to me to apply here. I'm not really changing the way the template renders, just adding additional parameters that can be used. I see this as more a case of WP:BRD. I was bold, you reverted (albeit for a different reason), now we discuss. Now, that being said, you have WAY more experience than me with templates! Either way, you say discuss the issue, so I'm totally on board with discussing. I just want you to know that I did consider this ahead of time but didn't feel that it needed prior discussion.
If you look at {{Infobox river}} you will see that I'm working with a few other editors on a radical redesign of the template. That I am ABSOLUTELY discussing and testing. Honestly was going to ping you about that template anyway to get your input on it. But I digress... Bottom line, I do apologies for being a pain in the behind at times. Please know I am striving to be better. Each and every time that you leave me feedback, I truly take it to heart. you seem to have forgotten how to use the "show diff" button before saving
. You're right! I was more a fan of using the preview button. One of the two bonehead mistakes I made yesterday was with including text that didn't show up in the preview. A new rule for me moving forward is that if I'm doing something on a protected template, even if it is a TINY change, I am going to both preview and show the diff. Then once I click save, I'm going to double check the diff to make sure that extra characters weren't accidentally included. I finally figure out that what happened yesterday was that I went to hit the shortcut keys for saving the page (after having checked my work) and because I was so tired and on autopilot, I hit the shortcut keys for pasting text instead. Going back and checking the diff after saving would have caught this mistake. So at least for now, that is something I'm going to do for edits on protected templates. Its one thing if I'm making changes to a page or small use template... But as you pointed out, I'm editing template-protected templates, so I think that an extra step is warranted.
You may not have the technical badge of an admin, but your feedback carries the same weight with me as that of an admin. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to provide me with feedback and for not hesitating to WP:TROUT me when I'm an idiot. Thank you again. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:02, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- Mostly, adding new aliases to templates is not a good idea. It makes documentation, error checking, and maintenance more difficult, and it can confuse editors who are used to a set of parameters and then find that their accustomed aliases do not work elsewhere. It is best to just stick with a reasonable standard.
- One good reason to add aliases or new parameters to a template is to make it have the same parameters as other similar templates. See Wikipedia:Coordinates in infoboxes for an example of that sort of standardization on a large scale. So, for example, if {{Infobox body of water}} used
|caption_lake=
, but all similar templates used|caption=
, adding|caption=
would likely be a good idea. If I am reading the diffs correctly, Zackmann08 added|caption_lake=
, which seems like it is going in the wrong direction. I could definitely be wrong in how I am reading the diffs, or perhaps this addition was part of a more comprehensive plan that could be explained in detail on the talk page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:22, 25 October 2018 (UTC)- @Jonesey95: the real thing I was adding was additional parameters for location. I was copying the syntax from {{Infobox valley}} to add country, state, region, etc. See this comparison. The confusion was that when I started the sandbox was not synced with the main template. So when I added my new parameters, I ALSO reverted the removal of deprecated parameters that had been removed from the main template, but not the sandbox. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:40, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi Zachmann,
When you vote to speedy keep it would be useful if you could specify which criterion for SK you think the nomination makes. Because SK is quite widely misunderstood and misused by editors who just want to express a strong opinion.

Geobox conversion
Your conversions of Geobox to Infobox settlement have been removing references from the article in the process. See Beltrees, Illinois, where it removed the article's only reference, and Beason, Illinois, where a reference later in the article got orphaned. I appreciate that you're converting the infoboxes on these articles, but please be careful that you aren't taking out information in the process. Reversion on Del Norte County, California
Hi! I noticed your edit to Del Norte County, California that removed a bunch of red-linked images of road shields (and others that weren't red-linked). It's great to see more editors dealing with the backlog at CAT:MISSFILE — thanks! The editors at WP:USRD/S/R and WP:HWY/RM are involved in making images for red-linked road shields. If you notice a page with red-linked road shields, it's better to ask that they be created than reverting the edit adding the red-linked shields. The editors at WP:USRD/S/R and WP:HWY/RM are rather fast at creating shields, so it doesn't harm the CAT:MISSFILE backlog reduction work. (Of course, if you feel that the roads shouldn't be on the page to begin with, that's another story entirely — revert away!) I posted here to get the shields made, FYI. Thanks again for all your great work! Relatedly, I very much like the "Projects" box on your user page. - tucoxn\talk 18:10, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

You reverted my addition because it didn't match with your idea of what the page should be. Correcting typo in name of Nicholas Byron (from Nicolas Byron)
Hi Zackmann08, I'm new to this, but did not think fixing the name typo would be in any way controversial. It should be Nicholas, not Nicolas.
I can't find any sources with the spelling Nicolas, which is a variant of the name usually found in Eastern European nations, not in England. See for e.g. (all showing Nicholas)

My contribution to an article was deemed "not constructive" and removed.
I clarified on the page for Steroids (Crouching Tiger Hidden Gabber Megamix) that the release was in fact a megamix and not an EP.
