[edit]Fecal microbiota transplant explains that feces are collected from a donor. The feces are processed as described, then either used fresh or refrigerated for a short period or even frozen/thawed for use later. The fecal material is introduced to the large intestine. This is either via a plastic tube placed through nose, throat and stomach to small intestine, or colonoscopy device accessing the large intestine via the anus.
Under normal conditions, the human large intestine (LI) contains approx 40 trillion bacteria, composed of approx 1,000 species. Sometimes, after treatment with antibiotics, the LI depopulates, and is repopulated by C. dificile, a 'bad' bacteria. The theory behind fecal transplant is to introduce enough live bacteria to compete and repopulate. Treatment for C. dif is reported to be 80-95% effective.
Probiotic dietary supplements are capsules that contain at most 10 billion of just a few species, so not enough to compete with C. dif. David notMD (talk) 09:07, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Re: Teahouse
[edit]Unfortunately, Tagishsimon is not presently contributing at the Teahouse, so I would feel bad if they got pinged to that effect. I dislike sharing stuff around per se, but an explanation may be found at this ANI thread. Cheers! — Remsense诉 04:25, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oh ok. I wasn’t aware. It looks like @Tagishsimon: was blocked from the teahouse for uncivil behaviour and refusal to communicate then? Windolson (talk) 00:25, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- I would refer to the logs and such, yes—I personally wish they could return and participate, but I just wanted to let you know. — Remsense诉 00:27, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
