Authority Control Integration
Hi, I've been researching the intersection of Wikipedia and Authority Control, and have just recently made a Village Pump Proposal to create a bot to expand the usage of a template. I've identified you as someone in the sphere of interest to this project and would appreciate your input at the Village Pump. Thanks, Maximiliankleinoclc (talk) 20:56, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for your comments on the proposal. We've refined it and worked out some more details after the discussion, and there is now a community Request for Comment to approve it being implemented. Any feedback gratefully received! Andrew Gray (talk) 09:47, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Ellen Burka
Hi Vysotsky, I'm not entirely clear on the copyright status of the image, but other World War II images have, in the past, been determined to benefit from continued copyright protection. I also think that, even if it is PD, using images produced without the subject's consent during the operation of a concentration camp is an ethical quagmire, especially where the subject's notability is not related to the Holocaust. As I disclosed on wikicommons, I do have a conflict of interest here, as I am related to Ellen. Her family would prefer that that image not be used, and I'm hoping to have a higher quality, contemporary photo available soon. Pburka (talk) 01:01, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Pburka, I can understand your (and your family's) motives and I am of course willing to retract the image from the Dutch Wikipedia as soon as there is another image (perhaps from the late 40s or 50s?) available. I used this early image because it was also used in a former and in a recent Dutch documentary. My apologies if I caused any harm. Vysotsky (talk) 10:34, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Rhodes
"British colonialist" isn't a neutral description of Cecil Rhodes? Who says he wasn't one? Everyking (talk) 02:01, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- I haven't said he wasn't one. In fact, if one needs a symbol of colonialism, Rhodes is a good choice. But that isn't what it's about here. In the first sentence of this article a neutral description of #RhodesMustFall is given, and the background of the protest movement is then explained in the second line. Vysotsky (talk) 09:48, 10 April 2015 (UTC)
- Those two words add a lot of context that helps make the whole thing comprehensible. How do they detract from the neutrality of the article? Everyking (talk) 15:54, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Adam Matthew account check-in
Hello Vysotsky,
You are receiving this message because you have a one-year subscription to Adam Matthew through the Wikipedia Library. This is a brief update, to remind you about that access:
- Please make sure that you can still log in to your Adam Matthew account. If you are having trouble let me know.
- Remember, if you find this source useful for your Wikipedia work, to include citations with links on Wikipedia. Links to partner resources are one of the few ways we can demonstrate usage and demand for accounts to our partners. The greater the linkage, the greater the likelihood a useful partnership will be renewed.
- Do you write unusual articles using this partner's sources? Did access to this source create new opportunities for you in the Wikipedia community? If you have a unique story to share about your contributions, let me know and we can set up an opportunity for you to write a blog post about your work with one of our partner's resources.
Finally, we would greatly appreciate it if you filled out this short survey. Your input will help us to facilitate this particular partnership, and to discover what other partnerships and services the Wikipedia Library can offer.
Thank you, Wikipedia Library Adam Matthew account coordinator HazelAB (talk) 16:10, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article Maxim Februari has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. noq (talk) 00:04, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

New article in draft space
Hi, there is a new article in draft space on Skip Prichard. Due to COI and the fact that it is under review I'm not comfortable adding to it but you might be better positioned and interested in it? Merrilee (talk) 21:38, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'll have a look. Nice photograph! Vysotsky (talk) 21:44, 26 October 2017 (UTC)
- Ha ha! Yes. I hadn't even made that connection.
- I did create a Wikidata item for him, so it should be easy to at least add the Authority Control template. Merrilee (talk) 21:54, 26 October 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited James Craig Watson Medal, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page David Gill (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Nicholas Mynheer moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Nicholas Mynheer, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Dutch National Archives photo question
Hi Vysotsky, I have a quick question that I'm hoping you can help with. I'm about to hit publish on an article about Truus Smulders-Beliën and wanted to use this image, c:File:Truus Smulders-Beliën (1951).jpg, which I noticed was donated by the Dutch National Archives. The original uploader tagged it with a CC-zero license, while the partnership page seems to specify a CC-BY-SA-3.0-NL license instead. Was this an error that I should correct or am I missing something? Thanks, DanCherek (talk) 12:19, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi DanCherek, The original source can be found here and does have a clear CC-zero license. The photographer of this photo was Joop van Bilsen. The confusion (CC-0 vs. CC-BY-SA) is caused by a policy change of the Dutch National Archives in 2017, when Nationaal Archief changed the license of the Anefo collection to CC-zero. At the same time their website states: "Wij stellen het op prijs als u bij het gebruik van een foto de fotograaf vermeldt en naar het Nationaal Archief verwijst. Bronvermelding is niet verplicht." (My translation: When you use one of these photographs, we appreciate mentioning the photographer and a reference to the Nationaal Archief. Mentioning the source is not obligatory." Vysotsky (talk) 12:35, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- I see, that's really helpful. Thank you so much for the quick response! DanCherek (talk) 12:37, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- I take it that you also watched the hilarious film fragment of the mayor moving to a new house in 1949? Vysotsky (talk) 13:28, 4 April 2021 (UTC)
- I didn't until just now! That's priceless, I'm so glad we have that. I'd like to expand the article in the future when I have more time — definitely adding that when there's space for it. DanCherek (talk) 13:44, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message
Veronica May Volkersz (née Innes)
Hi Vysotsky, I have recently read the "Serendipity" section that you wrote in Wikipedia Signpost, and I got a little bit curious about the mistake that happened. Therefore, I decided to check the original description (from the Dutch National Archives) below that portrait of Veronica (File:VeronicaMayInnes.jpg). I don't understand Dutch, so I decided to translate the original description using Google Translate, and I found something interesting about this mistake. Here are the original description and its translation:
Bijschrift: "Nederlandse ferry-pilote Ida Laura Veldhuyzen van Zanten, bijgenaamd Veronica X, transporteert Spitfires, samen met haar echtgenoot, een Nederlandse Marineluchtvaart piloot verbonden een "Inter-Empire" Spitfire squadron, gestationeerd in Engeland. Ze vervoert alles van Spitfires tot Wellingtons"
Caption: "Dutch ferry pilot Ida Laura Veldhuyzen van Zanten, nicknamed Veronica X, transports Spitfires, along with her husband, a Dutch Naval Aviation pilot associated with an "Inter-Empire" Spitfire squadron, stationed in England. She transports everything from Spitfires to Wellingtons"
It seems that the people in the National Archives thought that "Veronica" was the nickname of Ida van Zanten. Judging by the last part of the first sentence (...samen met haar echtgenoot, een Nederlandse Marineluchtvaart piloot verbonden een "Inter-Empire" Spitfire squadron), it also seems that Ida van Zanten got conflated with Veronica (i.e. They thought that these two women were the same person). :)
Another funny thing about this mistake is that the image seems to come from the blog of KLM (a Dutch airline), and that airline company also made the same mistake in its blog post about "Iconic women of Dutch aviation" as shown here. Notice that the aformentioned blog post contain a large and prominent portrait of Veronica in the section about...yes, Ida van Zanten!! :) It is funny that even the Dutch airline made the same mistake. Public Domain Day
Hil Vysotsky, it was great to read your signpost article about Public Domain Day. I am the author of the corresponding Diff post that was published earlier this month. Maybe we can collaborate next year? --Gnom (talk) 18:24, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- We should. I hadn't read your post, which seems unlikely when using the same examples - which demonstrates we not only used the same resources, but also share the same interests. Hence Wittgenstein. The main point in my piece is the complexity of copyright, and if the current prevalence of US Copyright will be stretched, so the 1998 US Copyright Term Extension Act will also be extended to Commons. My guess is that it will not, as URAA wasn't. Vysotsky (talk) 20:05, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- (CC Gnom) Did you know there is a Wikimedia sister project called Wikisource, that is currently busily transcribing Winnie-the-Pooh and other Public Domain Day works for 2022? While I'm sure Standard E-books is nice and all, Wikisource could sure use more attention and potential volunteers, so please keep us in mind for future Public Domain Day posts (or even just anything PD book related). And if you're interested in public domain books, stop on by Wikisource yourself (our village pump is the Scriptorium). I think you'd like it. :) Xover (talk) 15:11, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing to Wikisource. I once put a lot of effort in correcting the text of The Diary of Anne Frank on Wikisource. In December 2015 a Dutch court ruled that the 1947 published Dutch version of her diary is Open Domain in the Netherlands ((see the verdict, esp. the 2nd par. of 4.3.3). Alas, according to WMF US law comes first, so the text was removed from Wikisource. But I will give it a second thought. Vysotsky (talk) 15:29, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

- Nice one again this month. It's got good pageviews – I submitted it at Hacker News (as I did some of your earlier pieces) and I believe it entered the top-20 there. Keep up the good work! Your pieces lend themselves to being more widely read – they are of general interest and have "hooky" headlines. Best, Andreas JN466 16:33, 2 October 2022 (UTC)

World Cup article
Hello, Vysotsky,
I was looking at the upcoming Signpost issue and enjoyed reading your article about Wikipedia's coverage of the recent World Cup. It was very interesting, especially the part about the Iranian photographers and photo agencies. What regular editors might not have noticed during the World Cup is that really bad vandalism occurred on the articles of World Cup referees, some of which required giving the pages temporary protection. A referee that worked a match with the English national team seemed especially targeted. I've seen this vandalism happen during the regular football season sometimes but this was intense. Any way, I thought I'd just pass that along. Nice work! Liz Read! Talk! 23:03, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks! Very useful addition. Feel free to add that comment once the article is published! Vysotsky (talk) 11:26, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

Re Vince Taylor
Vysotsky (talk) 10:59, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- Hartstikke bedankt Vysotsky Lotje (talk) 12:04, 5 March 2023 (UTC)
- Vince Taylor (Q1417221) hier dan ook wijzigen? Cheers Lotje (talk) 12:07, 5 March 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
BGerdemann (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

Reminder to participate in Wikipedia research
Hello,
I recently invited you to take a survey about administration on Wikipedia. If you haven’t yet had a chance, there is still time to participate– we’d truly appreciate your feedback. The survey is anonymous and should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.
Take the survey here.
Kind Regards,
