Gregory P. Urban (1976-never) and The Northeast High School Scarlet Regiment
[edit]Greg Urban came into Northeast High school knowing perfectly well what he was getting himself into. It was a school whose band program was not famous, it was not influential, however, Mr. Urban could see the uniqueness of the band from their sound to their attitudes towards band. He started the band program with roughly 30 members in attendance each one having the ability to produce the sound of champions they just had the lack of a leader to get them there. As Mr. Urban embarked upon molding the Northeast High school Scarlet Regiment he found that with ever scale they play, with every chord they produce they grew into a band that will one day excel beyond any ones imagine of them. As the years have gone by Mr. Urban has had moments of great joy with the band and moments were he would rather be anywhere but around the band. These moments pass quick enough when he realizes that no matter how crazy the band can make him he would go insane seeing someone else doing his job, directing his band, teaching his children. Four years have gone by since Mr. Urban has started leading the Scarlet Regiment, and the band has gone from good to superior, below standards to reaching the sky, from being a band of 30 to a band of 150. The Northeast High School Scarlet regiment went from a band where no one really cared they were just another south county school, to a band where the crowd goes silent and the people what to hear the amazing sound. Mr. Greg Urban saved the Northeast High school Scarlet Regiment from their downward slope to being top of the mountain.

The Scarlet Regiment Marching Band
[edit]The Scarlet regiment’s members put uncountable hours of dedications on the field and in the classroom. Anywhere from memorizing music to learning sets. The band practices 2 days a week and occasionally on Saturdays. Northeast is also well know for there distinct drum line sound. The drum line is made up of 4 basses 3-4 snares, and 1-2 tenor players. This may be a small set up but the sound put out by this drum line is unmatchable by NONE! The drum line practices along with the band 2 time a week but also has extra practices. This may also include arriving to practice early staying late or coming in when the band isn’t there. The extra sweat, time, and dedication is what makes this drum line stand out from the rest.
The PIT is also known in some places the front ensemble. This is made up of Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Cymbals, and drum set. This is where all the miscellaneous instruments come into play. This is an important part of the band. The PIT puts in a lot oh hours practicing, perfecting parts, and learning the parts that are rewritten or added. The PIT practices 3 or more times a week like the drum line plus the time in class. The PIT is a huge part in any marching band. These student have enough discipline to sit down and learn music which most have more than one part to. This is the prime example of determination.
The Guard is another aspect of the marching band. This component is made up of Flags, rifles, sabers, and dance. The Guard practices with the Drum Line and PIT 3+ times per week. The Guard practices nonstop from marching in step with the band to making there flags all look in unison on tosses and twirls. This is one of the most time consuming parts of the Marching band. All parts are important no matter how small you must work them out or you won’t look like you are together. So, there students work on little things as well as the huge picture also.
The Brass section is just as well known as the drum line. The brass sections is made up of Trumpets, French Horns, Trombones, Baritones, and Sousa’s. The brass section at Northeast High is the smaller of the two wind sections. Now, just because the brass section is smaller does not mean that their sound is nonexistent. Because when the brass starts playing you know. You can feel the sound on your chest when you are sitting in the stands. Now imagine being in the arc with the low brass section at northeast, it is like you are standing next to a NASA launch pad. You don’t just become this good over night. The heart of the students and the dedication is what makes this section successful. Again, this Brass section is the best of the best.
The Woodwind section is the last section but certainly not the lest section that makes up the marching band. Being the larger of the two sections there is no doubt that this section can pack a punch when the time for greatness calls. The woodwind section is made up of Flutes, Clarinets, Alto saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, and occasionally a Baritone Saxophone. Whenever this section is called upon they respond. This section has received Best Woodwinds in the past few years in several competitions. The reoccurring word is dedication. The dedication if the woodwind section is just outstanding I don’t think that any teacher can ask for any better students.
Northeast High School has qualified for State Marching band from the 2004-2007 school years. Out side of FBA the marching band the Scarlet Regiment has traveled to numerous competitions including, Seminole sound, Timber Creak invitational, Eastlake invitational, Chamberlain, and the West coast invitational. At the competitions The Scarlet Regiment has received Best Brass, best woodwind, best percussion, placing 2nd,and placing, 3rd.
The students, of the Northeast High School Scarlet Regiment, have pride and wear the scarlet and cream uniforms with ever time they put them on.
The Northeast High School Jazz Band
[edit]The most recent addition to the Northeast high school is the NEHI Jazz band. In the past years as show above the Jazz band has been very successful. Receiving Excellent and Superiors. In the Past year, because of the mass interest and the number of students auditioning, the NEHI Jazz Band has grown from one Jazz band to two jazz bands. The NEHI Jazz Band is strictly extra curricular. Everything the Jazz Band does is after school. Both of the Jazz bands are equal in playing ability. Both Jazz bands are full with students who are dedicated whether it be showing up at 2 o’ clock right after school or 6 o’ clock and still managing to get homework done and keep the grades up. For the first time in a long time the NEHI Jazz band went to state. Under the direction of Mr. Urban the 6 o’ clock jazz band received an excellent rating at state. This is like receiving a “B” on a report card. You must start somewhere and the band just keeps improving day by day.
To be continued....
