GA Sweeps July update

Thanks to everyone's dedicated efforts to the GA Sweeps process, a total of 290 articles were swept in June! Last month was our second most successful month in reviewing articles (after May). We are currently over 70% done with Sweeps, with just under 800 articles left to review. With nearly 50 members, that averages out to about 15 articles per person. If each member reviews an article every other day this month (or several!), we'll be completely finished. This may sound difficult, but if everyone completes their reviews, Sweeps would be completed in less than two years when we first started (with only four members!). With the conclusion of Sweeps, each editor could spend more time writing GAs, reviewing at the backlogged GAN, or focusing on other GARs. Again, I want to thank you for using your time to ensure the quality of the older GAs. Feel free to recruit other editors who have reviewed GANs in the past and might be interested in the process. The more editors, the less the workload, and hopefully the faster this will be completed. If you have any questions about reviews or the process let me know and I'll be happy to get back to you. Again, thank you for taking the time to help with the process, I appreciate your efforts! --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 18:07, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

I closed it - thanks for the heads up. Crown FOuntain is on the backlog list and should be reviewed in the next few days. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:19, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

I think PR Bot would have closed the PR on the talk page in a few hours, but I did it by hand just now. Did not do the article history as I often screw that up when I try to do it. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:34, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

108 North State Street

Hi, I was just looking at the article 108 North State Street - for which you seem to be primarily responsible - for the GA Sweeps project. The article seems to be in good shape, but it needs to be updated (has it been completed on time etc.) Also, the "You Are Beautiful" section is poorly formatted and seems ephemeral (I guess this isn't your work). Do you think you could have a look at this? I haven't initiated an official review process yet; I know you're involved in the Sweeps project as well, and know how it works. Lampman (talk) 13:23, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

My main objection was with current information; now that it's been updated I see no problems with keeping it. I see that Nehrams has remarked on some minor style issues that could be improved on, but this shouldn't keep it from remaining a GA. Lampman (talk) 17:01, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Help?

If it doesn't bother you, could you identify the Chicago-area interchanges I took photos of?

Thanks! –CG 17:35, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Gordon Brown

It looks like the article is currently locked for a week, so that could be a reason that no edits are being made. If the main editor is not replying to the issues that you think should be completed for it to remain a GA then contact him on his talk page. If you still get no reply, then list it at GAR. Community consensus will determine if the article should remain or not. I'd say wait until the page is unprotected (still contact the contribtor(s) so that they can work on addressing the issues on the side until the page is unlocked) and if no improvements are made, either delist it or bring it to GAR (whatever you are comfortable with). As a side note, to help increase review participation, add {{Talk:Gordon Brown/GA1}} at the bottom of the talk page. Whenever you place an article on hold or pass/fail it, this should always be added to the discussion page so editors can jump in on the review. --Happy editing! Yes, locked down for a week. I left a comment on the review talk page Talk:Gordon_Brown/GA1 . When the page is unlocked I would like to help address the small concerns. (Off2riorob (talk) 21:08, 5 July 2009 (UTC))

Community area profiles

The ChapinHall research center at the University of Chicago has a very useful "Community Area Profile" for each of the Chicago Community Areas. This is a comprehensive collection of demographic data for each community area.

See, e.g. the one on Grand Boulevard: http://dcys-ycic.chapinhall.org/comm_summary.lasso?geoSpatialID=38

These would be a good external link for the Community Area pages. Rather than doing this manually, I thought perhaps someone with good "bot" skills could add them automatically.

If not, I'll add as the spirit moves me and time permits. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Daveyjchicago (talkcontribs) 11:20, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Editing survey

Hi. My name is Mike Lyons and I am a doctoral student at Indiana University. I am conducting research on the writing and editing of high traffic “current events” articles on Wikipedia. I have noticed in the talk page archives at Barack Obama that you have contributed to the editing or maintenance of the article. I was hoping you would agree to fill out a brief survey about your experience. This study aims to help expand our thinking about collaborative knowledge production. Believe me I share your likely disdain for surveys but your participation would be immensely helpful in making the study a success. A link to the survey is included below.

108 Sweeps

The article looks like it was placed on hold by Lampman in the worklist's history. I'd consult him for concluding the review. In the meantime, I'll list here a few issues I noticed with a quick glance. Is there a better infobox that can be included more details that can be added? Left-side images should not be placed under second level headings; either move them to the right or move them down a paragraph. The image near the completion section has no caption. The gallery should be removed; consider stacking some of the images showing the progress together instead. The article has a few dead links/redirects. If Lampman decides not to review the article, let me know and I'll review it. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 02:06, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Yeah I saw the message as soon as I saved. I was scrolling up to see your list of tigers and ran across the message. Hi, TonyTheTiger...Well, concerning McCartney's article, it sure does need to be re-increased in size as you have said. You've made this comment at least twice, and I'd be happy to comply. I think what had happened is that an article editor may have unintentionally took too much info out of the main article when creating a separate page for "Relationships and marriages". I'm not much help in these matters, as I'm more into discographies (which, by the way, might you be able to check out my work I've done on ABBA discography, which I'm so very proud of, please?...and, maybe rate that?!?...an FL/FA!?!). Anyway, I truly hope you pass this, and I very much myself find it to be quite a fascinating article. ...That's a lot of tiger pictures you have! Your GA nomination of PokerTracker

The article PokerTracker you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:PokerTracker for things needed to be addressed.

You may comment there or contact me directly with any questions you may have. I will be glad to help get the article up to GA standard. ThaddeusB (talk) 18:40, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorry to be a pain, the article just felt really choppy to me and I was trying to explain why. Really it is just an issue of copy editing, not any major problem with the article. I was trying to be specific and instead it came off as if I thought everything was wrong. No offense was intended. --ThaddeusB (talk) 03:19, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

So basically you are attempting to get every article within Millenium Park up to FA status. Sounds like a very interesting project, one which would certianly look good on the WP:Chicago mantlepiece. One of the biggest problems of course with wikipedia is inconsistency and you may read an FA on one articles and then the next will be poor! Re:Chicago Spire

I'll work on the article over the next few days. Unfortunately, most of the once very active WP:SKY members now seem to be on lengthy wikibreaks. Speaking of Chicago skyscrapers, are you going to nominate Trump Tower again at FAC now that the building is complete? Cheers, Raime 15:32, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

I finished addressing all of the concerns listed at Talk:Chicago Spire/GA1 , so the article should be able to maintain its GA-status. And I'm glad to hear you're going to try again with Trump Tower; that article is certainly of featured article quality, and now that the building is no longer under construction there should be no major roadblocks to it getting promoted. Good luck with all of your other nominations! Cheers, Raime 03:42, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Vincent van Gogh PR

I used to archive PRs, but now a bot closes PRs after 14 days of inactivity (or 2 inactive days if they are over 30 days old). To keep it open another 2 weeks just make a comment like "I'd appreciate more feedback" (also make sure it is not a minor editas the bot ignores those).

I also no longer regularly maintain the backlog list - User:Brianboulton does most of the time. It is always a judgment call and lately the backlog has been in the high teens or twenties, so the tendency is to be a bit quicker to remove articles with some feedback.

That said, I can review it if you'd like. I have three reviews in line and was thinking of reviewing Crown Fountain too, but could do van Gogh if you'd prefer. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:59, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

OK, I will review van Gogh. My one thought on Crown Fountain was wondering if it would be possible to get a video (fair use) of the fountain spouting. Billie Jean has a video of MJ moonwalking, which got me thinking of that as a possible idea.
I can grab a video of the fountain spouting. I was thinking just taping one of the towers going from a face, then face puckering, then spouting. How does that sound? You two have any other ideas? Also, I took a few shots and stitched them into a panorama of the fountain last time this was up at FAC to see if we could use it to fix the non-free image problems we were having. Is this something we are still interested in using? --TorsodogTalk 22:25, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Alt text and Barack Obama inauguration

I'm afraid I've only looked at the alt text. Almost all my comments on featured articles are alt-text comments—I comment on most articles, but typically just on that one narrow aspect. I'm afraid I typically don't have enough time to do higher-quality reviews. Eubulides (talk) 06:02, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I comment at WP:FAR and WP:FAC, at least for now (would appreciate help). Dabomb87 comments at WP:FLC. As far as I know, nobody does GA; too much work. Not sure about an automated bot; too many editors simply copy the caption to the alt text, perhaps with minor changes, and a bot'd have a tough time catching that. A toolserver app, Altviewer, just came online. Maybe as we gain more experience we can think about a bot. Eubulides (talk) 06:18, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I just now checked, and Wikipedia talk:Good article criteria #Alt tags suggests that alt-tag checking might be a bit controversial for GAs right now. I added a comment suggesting we wait a bit before trying that. Eubulides (talk) 06:36, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Barack Obama alt text

The Barack Obama alt text is mostly OK. I tweaked it a bit, and added a bunch of changes to supporting templates, so that the article should now be OK (once one protected template is edited by an administrator). Thanks for writing the alt text. Eubulides (talk) 07:38, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Deletions of Chicago Aldermen "Toni Foulkes", "Willie Cochran", "Lona Lane"

Hello Tony,

As you know I've been plugging away for a couple few years now, mainly on our esteemed alderpersons. I don't mean to make more of it than it is, but I'm proud of my contributions. I'm particularly proud of my commitment to the citation templates in this work.

A few weeks ago I started 3 articles on minor members of the pantheon, of course marked as stubs and needing help w/ refs. This week they were deleted, with no process beyond a 2-day speedy deletion notice on 1 of the 3 that I completely missed because I failed to log on to WP over the weekend.

I hope you have enough respect for my humble contributions to please lend your voice to my request for restoration. I am not sure notability can be established for these 3 but I want a chance. I will pledge to add addition text and references. I am more than willing to discuss notability and the appropriateness of refs, etc. on the talk pages, and to eventually accept non-notability, but I don't think it is fair to me to do so in the context of already deleted articles. Can you please help with a brief note to the administrator DragonflySixtyseven? Thanks! Hugh (talk) 18:11, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick reply and your kind words and offer to help.

Please see Deletions of Chicago Aldermen "Toni Foulkes", "Willie Cochran", "Lona Lane" and a reply on my talk page. AFAIK there will be no deletion discussion because the 3 articles are already deleted! I found the post-deletion appeal process but at this time I am trying to handle this simply with friendly request to the deleting admin. I would prefer to edit the text rather than start from scratch. Thanks again. Hugh (talk) 18:30, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Might the admins of WP:Chicago be a resource for me? Can you recommend anyone? Thanks again. Hugh (talk) 19:48, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

I have no problem with stubs. These were not stubs. They basically said "(POLITICIAN NAME) voted for/against the ordinance on keeping chickens. [[Category:Chicago politicians]]." .... and that's it. And that's all they said for a full month. If he's able to create genuine articles on these people, good. But this sort of misformed mess... no. DS 19:56, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Let me clarify. These articles were so awful, they were in violation of WP:BLP. DS 20:30, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Donald Trump

Hi, hope this finds you well! I noticed you reverted my edit to Donald Trump. I was in the process of sorting out the categories under real estate, and found that the terms/cats Category:Businesspeople in real estate, Category:Real estate companies and Category:Real estate and property developers had become unclear, and all terms/cats were being used for some/all articles which could be associated in that area. I hence reorganised the people into Category:Businesspeople in real estate, the companies into Category:Real estate companies or country sub-sections where they existed, and made both of these sub-categories of Category:Real estate and property developers. Hence, Mr Trump is correctly categorised, as cat in Category:Businesspeople in real estate it sub cats into Category:Real estate and property developers. I hope this clarifies my edit, and I hence reverted your edit to Trump, to reflect the new category/sub-category structure. If you have any questions, please - just ask. I'm going to start working on the rest of this. Just a note in passing about the time frame. Another editor who generally would jump right in and help me (Rossrs) with fixing any issues has suddenly found himself tied up with a unfortunately timed FAR on an article upon which he is one of the main editors. If there is sufficient progress on fixing any issues on the page, is it possible for an extension past July 25? Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 00:26, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

I didn't realize your response would be just under Rossrs FAR note. I haven't been a regular editor on the page, but I have kept a watch on it. I've only been involved in one GA article and wrote one featured list (quite proud of that), so I'm not highly skilled at articles at this level, mostly trying to keep them from being sullied by well-meaning but misguided edits. I truly don't want to see it lose its rating, so I'll forge on. Thanks so much. 00:39, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tony, not sure if you are watching it, but I made some comments on the Crown Fountain peer review. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:21, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tony, as far as I can tell the photo of Joanne Gair should be released via {(cc-by-2.0)} rather than fair-use copyright...Modernist (talk) 21:37, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Joanne main.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Polly (Parrot) 21:43, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Reverting without comment is far more than merely "annoying". I have explained my concerns about the article in great detail on its Talk page. Despite months of waiting, no one has addressed those concerns. If you think I am wrong, please explain your reasoning and show us where you think there is content that goes beyond that found in a dictionary. Rossami (talk) 15:27, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Louie Caporusso

There's a bot that adds them to the recent good articles now, hence why I didn't put it in immediately. Wizardman 00:11, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Cato June

Updated DYK query On July 28, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Cato June, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Paint A Licious.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Paint A Licious.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 06:38, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Inauguration of Barack Obama

I'll try to take a look at this this week, Tony. I've had other projects recently that have taken my time away from Wikipedia, but I'm sorry I haven't been more involved in the previous FACs. — Hunter Kahn (c) 22:10, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

I will also try to look at it by this weekend. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:22, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Cloudgate

You're welcome! Let me know what you are working on in the coming weeks. I see you are working on McDonald's Cycle Center and it is being peer reviewwed. I'll have a read of it later. Keep up the good work! Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:23, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I'll check them out later. Trump International Hotel and Tower from what I saw of it the other day is shaping up nicely. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:39, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks very much for the userboxes - I am a userbox minimlaist, but I have mentioned BP Bridge on my user page, and will probably add Cloud Gate to the PR / edits / FA section. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:26, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
