Deletion of FeedbackDashboard
Thanks for letting me know about the speedy deletion notice, but the page has already been deleted. Without knowing what the page was pointing to or why it was created (since I don't know what it was pointing to), the notice wasn't all that helpful. Banaticus (talk) 21:02, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

TIFF
Are you aware that DASHBot doesn't handle TIFF files very well? It seems that the bot replaces {{non-free reduce}} with {{non-free reduced}} without actually reducing the file. One example here and I have a few other ones in my watchlist. --Stefan2 (talk) 17:29, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- That is interesting. Apparently the mediawiki software serves a png file when you request a reduced version of a TIFF file. I've changed the bot's code so that it ignores all TIFF files from now on. Thanks for the heads up. Tim1357 talk 17:37, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- I think that this has to do with browser compatibility: there are more browsers which support PNG than TIFF. For the same reason, SVG files are converted to PNG if you request a thumbnail. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:41, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- I see. I've changed the bot so that it only processes jpeg, png, and gif. Tim1357 talk 20:30, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Bot report
Something has gone terribly wrong here. Perhaps you can take a look and make adjustments where necessary. Thanks. :) -- WikHead (talk) 02:02, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- And fixed. The bot inserted its usual <!--DASHBot--> inside a ref that was already commented out. I don't know how difficult coding a workaround would be, but the bot just needs to detect if there are already HTML comments around something to which it wants to make an addition. BOT error
The files Teletype Model 33 ASR Reader Punch.jpg and Teletype Model 33.jpg are part of a work in progress and that is why they appear to orphans.
Also both jpgs are considered free use as the summary states: Teletype is no longer a registered trademark. The US Patent and Trademark Office records state "This registration was not renewed and therefore expired." This status change happened on December 15, 2000. Serial Number: 73157988, Registration Number: 1119161. The last renewal was on May 29, 1979. The trademark was transferred to AT&T on July 12, 1985 and they never renewed it. The Teletype T logo has also expired.
Thank you! Wa3frp (talk) 01:25, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Wa3frp. It looks like those two images (under both of their "licensing" sections) are tagged as {{Non-free promotional}} which means they must abide by the wikipedia non-free image policy. As such, they must include a source and a rationale for using them, and must be included in at least one article at all times. That being said, I'm not sure this really falls into the "Non-free promotional" image category, because I'm not sure it was taken and released by a company to promote their product. Why don't you link me to where you got the image in the first place, and we'll start from there. For now I've asked DASHBot to stay away from those images, until we sort this out. Speedy deletions
I just declined some speedy deletions you tagged. If an article has been deleted by Prod before that does not make it eligible for speedy deletion. The only deletion process that will create an automatic redeletion is XfD and that is only if the recreation is basically the same content as the one deleted under the XfD. User script listing cleanup project
I'm leaving this message for known script authors, recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts, and those who've shown interest in user scripts.
This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.
If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 04:56, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)
Flagging bot changes
I am seeing a whole lot of changes by DASHBot on my watchlist. They are all good, but make it hard to spot changes I want to review. I have selected "Hide bots" on my watchlist, but the DASHBot changes still show. Changes by other bots do not show. Not a big deal, but I must have started well over 1,000 articles and the bot has only reached AB so far. There must be some way the bot can say "I am a bot"... :~) Aymatth2 (talk) 18:36, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

DashBot and WoRMS
DASHBot has just added an archiveurl
to the WoRMS reference at Afrocyclops. I would argue that this isn't very useful. While there may be archives of these pages, if the WoRMS page is updated, we should simply use the updated version. We do not expect link-rot to be a problem with pages such as these, so the archiveurl
parameter will almost certainly never be used. Even if the page were updated, it would still be more useful to the reader to be directed to the up-to-date version than the outdated version; I would recommend advising DASHBot to ignore WoRMS links and similar cases where the database is effectively permanent (e.g. ITIS, probably a few others, too). --Stemonitis (talk) 15:20, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- I've added marinespecies.org to the list of urls to ignore. Tim1357 talk 23:03, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Broken watchlist... again
The Wikiproject Watchlist - WikiProject New York City Public Transportation has yet another glitch. ----DanTD (talk) 23:09, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, the database that the tool works off of is being updated, and therefore cannot be written to (the most recent edit is almost a week old). That being said, I do have it on my todo list to make the tool not depend on the write function (which is what causing the glitch right now). Tim1357 talk 23:04, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
CatTrack tool
I noticed this hasn't harvested any points since 5 March. Problems? Rich Farmbrough, 03:43, 24 March 2012 (UTC).
- Thanks. I re-did my crontab file when the toolserver box it was hosted on had a glitch and I lost it. I must have forgotten to put the harvesting script in there. Done (but it won't do anything for a while, because the database is in read only mode because of the replication lag) Tim1357 talk 22:54, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

DASHBot Link Replacement Confidence: +/- 6 month window vs +/- 1 month window?
I have a question about how DASHBot replaces links with archive copies. Specifically, I want to know about your choice of how close the access date must match the archive date. I noticed that DASHBot's request for approval proposed +/- 6 month window but now only replaces within a +/- 1 month window. Why did you narrow the window? Was it because of bad replacements?
Also, I have an open request for approval for a bot that tries a different strategy to repair link rot. You might find it interesting. Blevintron (talk) 20:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
- Well, here was my thinking: The risk of archives not matching their original, as-originally-accessed url goes up the longer the window I allow for. Because the bot is preemptively adding these archives, I figured I could afford to be more stringent on my window, because the task is less urgent.
- That BRFA looks pretty interesting, I'll take a look. Tim1357 talk 23:26, 27 March 2012 (UTC)

- I’m just curious why you’re ignoring his requests as to if you plan to add it to WP:DBR or have it run under one of your own bots. I mean, you are the guy who asked why this wasn’t done earlier when you picked up the request and maybe whilst I shouldn’t be delegating stuff like this through a third party I do think at least giving a reason why you didn’t give a reply would be better than ignoring the reply outright as it just seems incredibly dickish of you. - The bot runs on the toolserver. I set up a page at WP:DBR. I've set the bot to run monthly, but I can change that interval if you'd like. Tim1357 talk 05:46, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
- The interval seems fine but I’m wondering about it including only old articles which haven’t been edited in a few years. It's good but does it exclude articles which might have recently had a bot or semi-automated edit fly past? I felt when I first thought of the task’s requirement that it should also be looking for articles with minimal edits (less than 15-20) within the same timespan regardless of when the edits occurred. baa! radda 13:13, 17 March 2012 (UTC)
- In response to your first question: It does not exclude articles that have been recently edited by bots. It would be incredibly resource-consuming to have a query exclude bot edits, because of the way the mediawiki database is structured. However if you thought it was really necessary, I could change it to do that.
- I'm not really sure I understand your second point. You want the query to "look for articles with minimal edits within the same timespan regardless of when the edits occurred". Does that mean you want it to find articles with very low edit counts? Please clarify. Tim1357 talk 20:29, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
- I don’t mean bots but anyone editing recently at all, like someone making a small edit using AWB, if it doesn’t filter for that sort of edit then the bot can ignore it and it’ll be left abandoned. The second point was linking to the first as a solution, so instead of passing over abandoned articles which recently had a typo fix or recategorisation it’d be able to capture those in addition as otherwise it’s a huge blind spot for the bot to ignore them if they had one new edit out of 10 much older edits total which didn’t actually expand the article. So yeah, exactly that in addition to the current criteria as something else to match articles by. Most will fall under both but this is to catch outliers as well. If you have a solution as well, please tell me about it. baa! radda 12:11, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry, just thought I’d mention but if it runs monthly it probably could be run to include more? Just looking at the results and whilst great for the year of 2007 I think we might be limiting it by too much given the amount of single edit articles out there in that year so maybe up the threshold to possibly go back as far as 2004? If it creates huge lists, we can always break it up by year. baa! radda 12:39, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted
I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.
This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.
Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!
I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.
Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.
Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 15:11, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Album ratings bot
Hi Tim. Any chance of getting the album ratings bot up and running again, to move reviews from the infobox to the album ratings template? As you'll recall, that was hugely popular over at WikiProject Albums, and someone's asked about it recently, at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums#Album ratings bot. The last time we talked about this was a few months ago, at User talk:Tim1357/Archive 8#The return of the album ratings bot. You were working on having the bot figure out where to create a References section on pages that had navboxes. It sounded like you were close to getting that part to work. I remember you had also made more progress by not having the bot do any incidental cleanup, instead it was just moving the reviews. Anyway, if you have any thoughts on this subject, please reply here and I'll see what you say, or else you can post on in the current WikiProject talk section. Thanks. — Mudwater (Talk) 10:37, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool
Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.
For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

File:Milleniumcouncle.JPG
Why is the file File:Milleniumcouncle.JPG attributed to your bot? I uploaded it. Jason Palpatine (talk) 05:15, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
- You uploaded an unnecessarily large copy of the image, so the resolution was reduced by the bot. After that, the old revision uploaded by you was deleted since it was unused, leaving only the credit to DASHBot. Solution: don't upload unnecessarily large non-free files. That way, they won't have to be reduced. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:38, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Watchlist bug
I regularly use the wikiproject watchlist (which I find very useful by the way) and I've found something really weird: every change to the article Anti-German sentiment get listed on the wikiproject Switzerland watchlist even though there isn't any WikiProject Switzerland tag on the talk page (I was going to remove the tag as I don't think this article is within the scope of the project). Do you have any idea of what is happening there? mgeo talk 17:55, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Can you help?
Hi, I was attempting to add the Category for session musicians from New Zealand, after discovering that that more specific branch of session players from other countries lacked it for NZ. I am completely ignorant of basic computer skills, including some things in the Wikipedia. Would you take a look at it, and see if my feeble attempts completely screwed it up, and/or you might be able to fix it? It is here: Category:New Zealand session musicians-- I can already see a problem, that I named it as "session musicians" without capitalizing the first letter of "Session musicians". Unreferenced BLPs
Hi Tim1357. What criteria does DASHBot use to include articles on a WikiProject's "Unreferenced BLPs" list? Is it just the presence of {{BLP unsourced}}? Specifically, with reference to Wikipedia:WikiProject Formula One/Unreferenced BLPs, I updated the two listed articles a couple of days ago such that the {{BLP unsourced}} could be removed, but DASHbot has since twice re-added the articles to the WikiProject page. Thanks. DH85868993 (talk) 03:27, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Sweetwater-logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. Stuck at July 16
Hi, the log for WikiProject+Chess hasn't been up-to-date recently, is it something I'm doing wrong? (Cleared my cache, same result.) I notice "Replication Lag: ~ 606863 seconds." which adds up to the backlog I'm guessing. Can you shed light? Thx! Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:13, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Will you be repairing the link previously active here or should I find an alternative means? TParis has agreed to support the link if you grant permission to use the code. In either regard, thank you for the time when you did support this link and allow it for use. It has been invaluable. Best regards 76Strat String da Broke da (talk) 00:32, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

re: DASHBot
Please update your coding. DASHBot recently tagged Longest Wikipedia Article for speedy-deletion under criterion R2. That title redirects to Special:Longpages. Special: is a subset of Wikipedia: and as such is excluded under the wording of CSD#R2. Like redirects to the Wikipedia-space, redirects to the Special-space must be nominated to RfD. Thanks.
