Protesting questionable adminship

The following occured after I had removed the welcome tag from my talk page in protest of the incident that occured at User talk:bp0, in which bp0 was temporarilly blocked and his talk page protected for repeatedly removing his welcome tag. Since then, the issue has been resolved – bp0 was swiftly unblocked and his talk page unprotected, and to prevent being continously hounded for doing nothing wrong or against policy, I have re-added the welcome tag above.

If you wish to remove another editor's comments from your talk page, make sure you have permission from that editor before doing so. See WP:TPG and Wikipedia:Wikiquette. Even though I've been here for a year and a half, I would still contact the original editor who placed my welcome tag, if I wished to remove it. --Madchester 09:23, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Status of Disney inquiries

Hi Shran, I saw on the Talk:List_of_DuckTales_episodes page that you contacted Disney about episode numbering and air dates a few months ago... did you ever receive a reply? Hi there. Sorry for the late reply. I have contacted Disney but never did receive a reply and I don't expect that I will. Updating the DuckTales episodes at IMDb is on my priority list, as well; I've already updated the credits for the first eight episodes (up through "Hotel Strangeduck"), but it's going slow due to IMDb's peculiarities. They will update the pages, but might leave out a few things the require more updating, etc. I've been using the airdates supplied by the guy over at TV.com who swears to me that those are the correct dates. I've verified that five of the episodes I've updated are complete; the others are still pending, after which I will continue onward. So, it's going very slow. Unfortunately, as I said, I have not received a reply; not only that, but I've lost the exact address so I can't send another letter. I've asked Disney.com again for the address, but they're not replying now. Indeed it can. :) Actually, I'm wondering if the Disney Company themselves even know for sure about what episodes aired on what date. It's possible (though I wouldn't think likely) that they didn't keep proper records on the show. Or maybe they just don't like to give out that information. Who knows? Hopefully things will be cleared up soon, but for now, going by the dates at TV.com is probably the best thing (for the first season, anyway -- not sure if the other season[s] have been corrected yet). --From Andoria with Love 03:28, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I usually have to make do with about an hour, maybe an hour and a half, after which I have class. But it's better than not listening to 'em at all. Even a little T&R can make my entire morning. They vandalized the an article which another admin protected about 5 minutes after the vandalism started. Then, the next day they created a fake article, which got deleted after about 5 minutes. They were trying to mock how wikipedia could be edited by anybody but i think they were suprised when all there mess was cleaned up. I remember something about them writing or editing a page with fake info. I don't recall any of the specifics though; I can't remember any phone calls explaining things to them, either, sadly. Searching for "Turk Maxwell", I found that T&R posted most of their article in their recap section on FM99.com, found here. Check out the Wednesday, Feb 28th entry titled "We are Breaking the Internet!!!" Yeah, I'm sorry for being uncivil, I really admire your Memory Alpha work. It's just, Wikipedia is not an American encyclopedia, we serve English readers across the world and often we use posters being used in multiple countries to reflect this. I remember this is why we selected the poster we did on Spider-Man 3 rather than the American poster. :) Alientraveller (talk) 18:08, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No worries, I just get overly passionate about there things. You're right, this isn't an American encyclopedia, but Trek is an American movie and all the other Trek movies use the US posters. As far as the poster "best representing" the movie, the UK poster actually doesn't represent the film that well at all. It features the Enterprise being attacked by Nero's ship, with the viewer's eye being led to the attacking ship. That's not what the movie is about. There's also the odd, random placement of Sulu and Chekov and the omission of Scotty and McCoy. The US poster better represents in the movie, with its sleek "warp" design obstructing the view of the Enterprise, giving a sense of the unknown. Benjamin Franklin Village

Hey there, i read your comment on the talk Page of the Benjamin Franklin Village. I live pretty close, in Ludwigshafen (just across the river from Mannheim). The Benjamin Franklin Village is not what it was back in the late 90s. Since a couple of years, it is clear that it will be shut down. Probably next year or 2013. In 2014 the ownership of the grounds will definitely go back to the city of Mannheim.

The last "German American Volksfest" was last year in 2010. There was none this year, and there probably will be no ones in the future at all. It looks like a ghost town there, at least compared to about 10 years ago. The Same thing goes for the Coleman Barracks and other ones, they are ghost towns.

It is a sad thing, i really loved the German American Volksfest.

PX, Commisarry, Burger Kinger, Taco Bell and Popeyes are still open. Because as you might know, the Benjamin Franklin Village was somewhat of a "central meeting and shopping point" for people from the other barracks in that area. But they will also close soon i guess.

She Blinded Me with Science: Smithsonian Women in Science Edit-a-Thon will be held on Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Smithsonian Archives in Washington, D.C. Though we have a massive snowstorm coming up, spring is just around the corner! Personally, I am looking forward to warmer weather.

Wikimedia DC is looking forward to a spring full of cool and exciting activities. In March, we have coming up:

  • Evening WikiSalon on Wednesday, March 12 from 7 PM – 9 PM. Meet up with Wikipedians for coffee at the Cove co-working space in Dupont Circle! If you cannot make it in the evening, join us at our...
  • March Meetup on Sunday, March 23 from 3 PM – 6 PM. Our monthly weekend meetup, same place as last month. Meet really cool and interesting people!
  • Women in the Arts 2014 meetup and edit-a-thon on Sunday, March 30 from 10 AM – 5 PM. Our second annual Women in the Arts edit-a-thon, held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Free lunch will be served!

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Two edit-a-thons coming up!

I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:

  • This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
  • On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

We have more stuff coming up in May and June, so make sure to keep a watch on the DC meetup page. As always, if you have any recommendations or requests, please leave a note on the talk page.

Washington, DC meetups in June

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

  • On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
  • Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
  • The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
  • Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
  • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

When: Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM

Museum hacks and museum edits

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

Let's block the user who messes up the TCM Remembers pages.

Hey, i have a bad news to tell you. The user User: 76.99.80.177 who is making adding people in TCM Remembers he believes that are added as his troll fandom is still doing it and does not litsen to you what you've said to him.

If the user is not doing this to other pages, then we should first request protection of the page and warn the user that he will be blocked should he continue to add names. If after the protection is lifted he goes back to adding those names, we can warn him one more time and maybe request a longer protection term for the page. If that doesn't work, I think then we can ask an admin to block him. I think this falls more under edit warring than vandalism or trolling, so I don't think an admin would block the user without taking at least one of those steps. The page has been protected again, this time for a whole month. Any edits made must first be approved by a reviewer (in this case, I believe it's NeilN, the one who protected the page). If the user continues to vandalize the page after the protection is lifted, then I will request that he be blocked. I'm hoping, though, that this pending-edit protection will deter him from editing the page further and there will be no need for a block. Haskell Wexler

You keep throwing around "Medium Cool is much more groundbreaking". Says who? You? Comparing notability between Medium Cool and Cuckoo's Nest, the latter wins by a large margin. Best Picture winner, and globally known. Cuckoo's Nest appears on 50+ global Wikipedia sites, including this English version. Medium Cool is only on 6. Gorundbreaking doesn't equal to most notable. And what does saying "he didn't shoot 100% of it" help with? Wexler himself stated “There’s only about a minute or two minutes in that film I didn’t shoot.”Haskell Wexler, Oscar-Winning Cinematographer, Dies at 93. So even if he didn't film 100% of it, he very much filmed 99% of it. You might prefer Medium Cool more than Cuckoo's Nest, that's all fine and good. But keep personal preferences out of it. History calls it groundbreaking, as does the New York Times (in the very story you just linked), the Art Institute of Chicago ([1]), any book you read on the subject (a search for "Medium Cool"+"landmark" or "Medium Cool"+"groundbreaking" or just "Medium Cool" will prove my point), and pretty much every site that reported Wexler's death. As I said when I first edited the entry, Cuckoo's Nest may be his most well-known film, and is a landmark in its own right, but Medium Cool "broke ground in the way it used scripted action within a documentary framework"[2] and "is as prescient a political film as Hollywood has ever produced."[3] And not shooting "one or two minutes" of a film means he didn't shoot 100% of the film, yes? Whereas he shot *all* of Medium Cool, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Bound for Glory. I just figured if we were going to list his most notable works that they should be ones he was able to complete rather than those that fired and replaced him. Basically I just figured that "groundbreaking" + 100% Wexler was more notable than "more popular" + 99.9% Wexler. Having said that, I did not expect the editing of one little entry to be a big issue, so if you wish to list Cuckoo's Nest in place of Medium Cool, I won't change it again. --ThylekShran (talk) 17:56, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I know I can be an annoying prick at times, it's really not my intentions to blow things up bigger than they should, but to me we should document their biggest achievements. Cuckoo's Nest is one of the greatest films ever made. With guys like Wexler it'shard to determine that as he's done many films that hold a place in film history. No worries; I can be an annoying prick too, as you've no doubt observed. :) And you're right, Cuckoo's Nest is mentioned more predominantly in obits (particularly in the headlines), and it also has significantly more votes on IMDb than any of the other films he shot or made, so it's definitely his most popular film. I suppose that makes it his most notable as well, at least by Wikipedia standards. For the record, I love Cuckoo's Nest, it's one of my 100 favorite films, but Medium Cool was an innovative work that had, I believe, a greater impact on filmmaking as it pretty much created a whole new style/genre of film. Steve Sandor

Hey. Out of curiosity I’m wondering if you could aide in something.

I remember a couple years back there was an issue where it wasn’t able to be confirmed actor J. E. Freeman had passed away. You reached out to someone who was able to garner confirmation on the news. I wondered if it could be possible if you’d be able to do the same for Steve Sandor. His death was announced on various unreliable websites like IMDB and blog sites. I’d like to get confirmation so we can keep his article accurately maintained and not mislead people into believing he’s still alive if he is in fact no longer. This blog seems to point to an April 5, 2017 passing, something IMDB and some Star Trek wikis Have also stated.

I've reached out to my friend Rhett Bartlett; he's the one who confirmed Freeman's death. He's told me he will look into Sandor's death; if he's able to confirm it, he'll write up an obit that we can use as a source as was done for Freeman. Update: I haven't heard back from Rhett about Sandor yet, however the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed that Sandor passed away this year by adding him to their memoriam listing. Alas, they do not list a specific date of death, so I cannot yet confirm that part. But he did indeed pass away this year. It seems it was able to be sourced with both the AMPAS source as well as his entry on Find a Grave, which also has a burial location. Thanks for the update. I never heard back from Rhett about this, but then Sandor is one of several deaths he's been trying to confirm for a while now. Some are easier to confirm than others; he may not have had sufficient time to look into it yet, or his sources/contacts may not have come through.
