I wanted to give you a barnstar, but unfortunately it was eaten by a bear. Thanks for the laugh. |
Userboxes
Hello, Thomprod
You didn't have to ask permission to use the userboxes, i created them precisely for that; to be used by all Wikipedians. Not only you can use them, as you are welcome to use them. I'm happy you liked some of the boxes i created. If there's anything you like here, just pick, you can use them as you like. Enjoy it and happy editing.

- I saw your request on gingko100's and was coming here to let you know that you do not have to ask for permission to use any user box utilized on wikipedia. As part of the user agreement to use wikipedia, one agrees to license everything under the GLDF---which ensures free access to the material presented here. Whoever told you otherwise was wrong and depending on what was said and how it was said should be advised of such.Balloonman (talk) 04:14, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- PS a Gingko100 is my better half... if you feel as if you need permission... have no fear... she is part of a group that specifically hosts user boxes for people to use.Balloonman (talk) 04:22, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Like the above stated, permission isn't required to use a userbox unless there's a big sign that says "DO NOT USE". --The Dark Side (talk) 15:03, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you all for your replies. My hesitation was based on this sentence found on WP:UBX#Using existing userboxes: "It may be considered uncivil to place any userboxes on any other user's page(s) without their permission." I appreciate the reassurance that the copying was acceptable, but perhaps the "guideline" should be changed to reflect this? Thomprod (talk) 17:13, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Reread the guideline
It may be considered uncivil to place any userboxes on any other user's page(s) without their permission. In other words, it may be uncivil for me to place a user box on your talk page (or vice versa). What it is saying, is say you are Catholic but you don't have the "Catholic User" user box on your talk page. It may be uncivil of me to place that box on your page without your permission because you may not want it. OR suppose you are Catholic, and I placed a "Baptist User" user box on your page. Or how about something political? Or sports related? (Better not put a Yankee box on my page!) Or sexual? It isn't saying that you can't use somebody else's user box, it is just saying, don't place a user box on another person's talk/user page without their permission.Balloonman (talk) 17:45, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- I understand now. I took the phrase on any other user's page(s) to include my own. Thanks for straightening me out. Thomprod (talk) 18:40, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- As a general rule, it is considered impolite to edit another person's user or talk page (beyond making comments.) For example, I may want to Archive a person's talk page because I think it is too long, but it isn't my place to log another person's talk page. I may think a page looks nicer if it was edited in a certain way, but it wouldn't be polite to make any formatting/design changes without permission.Balloonman (talk) 19:25, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Lansing, MI Roads Meet (f/ WP MI Roads Editors)
Hi Thomprod - As an editor on the Michigan Highways Project here on WP, I wanted to give you a heads up about an upcoming event, in case you might be interested. We have been doing an annual gathering of roads enthusiasts in Michigan every year in the month of December since 2002 (except 2006), gathering to share maps, photos and other interesting artifacts while shooting the breeze over lunch, then touring some interesting roads projects and highways of note in the area in question.
We've been doing most of them in SE Michigan, but this year we're going outstate and holding it in the Lansing area, on Saturday, 12/20/2008. We'll be meeting at Reno's East Sports Bar in East Lansing at 11:30 AM for lunch. Afterward, we'll be touring various projects and routes of interest in the Lansing area. The tour will be finished by 3:30-4:00 PM. If you have an opportunity, I hope you'll be able to join us for what always turns out to be a fun event. Some of the other WP roads editors from the State of Michigan are planning on attending at this time, for what it's worth. Please let me know if you might be interested, and I can give you further details.
Thank you very much, and enjoy the rest of your weekend! DanTheMan474 (talk) 19:14, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi DanTheMan474. My weekends in December are booked up already, but thank you so much for the invitation. Sorry I haven't been able to contribute much to the project, but I'm still interested and plan to participate more in the future. Thomprod (talk) 19:48, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
Oops!
Sorry about the oversight and thanks for the fix :) -hydnjo talk 01:30, 3 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hydnjo, no apology is necessary. I'm not looking for recognition. I just didn't realize that there was a list of RefDesk editors, so I added my name. Cheers. Thomprod (talk) 19:06, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
WWJ-TV
TomCat4680, on December 4, 2008 you restored some text that I deleted from WWJ-TV on November 11. You added back "Main WWJ-TV / CBS programming in HD" to the Digital Television chart. When I deleted this previously, I gave the reason as "removed "CBS Programming in HD" since some programming is local and most of it is not in HD". Please explain why you disagree. Thanks. Thomprod (talk) 18:10, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well it is a CBS affiliate isnt it? Doesn't it show CBS shows in HD? If I'm missing something please fill me in, I don't live in Metro Detroit and I can barely pick up WWJ-TV on my crappy indoor antenna here in the Flint area. I was just going by what other stations' pages had listed.TomCat4680 (talk) 19:14, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, it's a CBS affiliate, but not all CBS programming is in HD. All local and CBS News programs are still in SD, as are the daytime "soaps" except for Y&R. Local programs are either syndicated nationally or locally-produced, and therefore, not affiliated with the network. I think saying that all programming on the digital channel is from CBS and in HD would be misleading. Thomprod (talk) 19:23, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
- Ok well how about just saying "Main WWJ-TV / CBS programming", the "/" meaning "or"TomCat4680 (talk) 07:01, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
- That sounds reasonable, TomCat. Thomprod (talk) 17:15, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
